The other day, I wonder what is wrong with Hollywood. I tried to think what was casuing Hollywood to produce bad movies again and a again. The only thing I could come up with is this. Those who are currently in control at all the major studios are running out of ideas.

Example A: Snakes on a Plane. Enough said. The title gives away the plot of the movie and there really is no surprise to the movie. The movie should have honestly never been made. But someone somewhere thought the movie was one of the best ideas he had heard. Its the typical case of Hollywood trying to make a bad movie into a blockbuster with a cheap budget. Granted their marketing was great and they generated alot of buzz before the movie came out. But the fans spoke loudly with poor box office sales and hardly any press after its release.

Example B: Dukes of Hazzard. What do you get when you take a so so TV series, write a movie based on it, and mix it with Jessica Simpson? An embarssing flop. The only thing that truelly got people to go see Dukes of Hazzard was Jessica Simpson. I never once saw any mention of the plot in any trailer. The only reason this movie was made was to make money for studios. Which eventually it didn't

So why does Hollywood make such bad movies? There are several answers to this question. The number one reason is to make money. Hollywood will rehash an idea a thousand times over just to make money. All the studios want to make money off of the hottest movie or the greatest idea by making their own version of it. But this leads to the market being flooded with the same ideas and will make the market stale and repeative. The second reason is lack of new and fresh ideas. As of the last few years, independent filmmakers have taken the lead in generating some of the best movies. They provide well developed stories and make them on shoe string budgets. These filmmakers put their soul into these movies and spend a lifetime making, and it really shows in the quality of the movie. I honestly never thought Little miss sunshine was going to be a hit movie, but it has done great at the box office and peaked interest from every age group. Hollywood leans on indepent filmmakers to break new grounds and ideas.

My point is this. Hollywood will do anything to make money. They will hire an actor simply because he/she has a name that everyone knows, not taking into effect the quality of the movie. If Hollywood wants to make good movies that everyone will see, invest the money you would have spent on the big name actors into finding a great script that is pure gold.

Oh, I think they've always been making loads of bad movies. It's just we remember a few gems. If you think back to all the great films, you don't come up with several for each year. Try naming an excellent film from every year from 1980 to 1989.

Oh, and Snakes on a Plane is the best title for a film ever. Don't diff the snakes, man!

Avid, First I would like to dissagree about Snakes on a Plane. Some movies are made to be bad for the simple reason that some people, (like me) enjoy a good 'b' movie.

So why does Hollywood make such bad movies? There are several answers to this question. The number one reason is to make money. Hollywood will rehash an idea a thousand times over just to make money.

Secondly, I'd like to clarify what is meant by bad movies... the Evil dead trillogy were all 'b' movies, and were all so bad that they are a lot of fun to watch. What's more, those movies did a great deal to revolutionize an entire genre and reinvent the campy horror flick.

So I would like to point out that there is a difference between a 'b' movie and a pointless movie.

As of the last few years, independent filmmakers have taken the lead in generating some of the best movies.

It's been longer than a few years that independant movie makers have been pioneering new ground and generating some of the best movies... I came across a very interesting list of the to 50 indie films.

I have to agree with most of the top 10, though I thought sidways was a bit pointless.
