I wonder how many of you are even interested in Poetry. Poetry websites abound and many forums have poetry sections. I know http://www.witchvox.com does. I know http://www.literotica.com does. Yet, I wonder when I get readers (if I get readers) I don't get a lot of votes, even though I've been reading and studying and writing poetry for 40 years. I wonder if they know enough about poetry to judge it one way or the other. Surely all those teachers in my life weren't giving me A's for nothing? I wonder if the common blog reader knows the difference between a sonnet and a mazda.

I wonder how many people go to poetry readings? Now, within the real life poetry community, the poets seem very devoted. There are vampire poetry nights, senior poets, college poets, slam nights, chapbook exchanges and newsletters devoted to listing all the cafes and coffee shops that have poetry nights. Some even hire poets.
Yet how many living poets can you name off the top of your head without resorting to google. Go ahead...list them right here for me. I have my own list I can rattle off, but I want to hear yours. And just for the sake of argument, let's rule out songwriters, even if they do write an occassional poem.
Can you name 10 poetry formats?
Have you read your poetry outloud anytime in the last year? The last 10? Ever?
I know recently someone said that survey type blog entries aren't really blogging, but I disagree. It's a good way to keep your finger on the pulse of the Internet.

i used to write poetry but i found that my talents lie in prose, not poetry. i get rhythm but i feel too constrained by rhyme and meter. yeah, i know, there's other kinds that don't depend on those things, but honestly, there's part of me that doesn't feel right not using 'em.

    JMHO.

I do admire writers like Tolkien or Shakespeare that could handle both prose and poetry.

Sorry Purple. I know less about poetry than I do about painters. But like painting, I can appreciate a good poem when I read one. I think it is meggs who has that thing about writing a poem about your user name. I took a bit of time with mine and I think it turned out okay. meggs said she liked it. But I respect anyone who is good at poems. In Vancouver they have been running this thing called poetry in transit. Each year they select poems by local authors and print them on bus advertising sheets and put them in the buses. I have read some wonderful lines on those that really moved me. Sadly, I have forgotten them now.

I was an English major in college.
I've read more than my share of poetry.

I don't read it as much these days.

I own Whitman, Frost, Dickinson, Dylan Thomas,
TS Elliot, Shakespeare among others, and I do reach for these on occasion.

I've turned my kids onto this stuff as well, although I'll tell you that only my oldest is really interested. Maybe the others are too young yet...I'll keep trying.

That is one of the ironic things about college. Even the most obcessed reader often begins to hate reading because of all the college reading they are required to do. It's a shame that you go to school with a burning desire to learn and by the time you get out you'd rather toss a book into the fire than read it. There is something wrong with this system.

    oh purple I read constantly.

I don't read classics constantly; but I do read allthe time.

I read alot of fiction because that's what I love.
I read contemporary fiction most often.

I actually started being interested only few months ago. I like Sage Francis, Nikki Giovanni & Maya Angelou. But it took me time to like it. It's not obvious to like poetry. It can be hard to understand sometimes. It's also really complicated to feel something special.
I really enjoy listening to it now. It's like listening to jazz or classicl music. It soothes me. I'm trying make some effort & discover other famous poets, beside the new writters I'm used to.

I think it is hard to stand out as a poet. It seems there are billions of poets on the Internet. How does one make a name for themselves?

Sad to say I can't do any of those things. I'm very picky with my poetry and I haven't stumbled across any "new" poetry that I care for. I will name Richard Jackson. He's the creative writing professor at The University of Chattanooga. He is phenomenol. I try not to read all that much poetry, because I fell like it influences my style. But, in the words of the legendary Edward Abbey, "Poetry, even bad poetry, may be our only hope."

i realize i never answered the original question: yes, i believe in poetry, w/ all my heart and soul.

I guess it all really depends upon what the poem is trying to make one believe. If the moral of a statement is truly believable then I agree that making it poetic could make it rather unbelievable.
