O.K. If anyone can give me an example of a truly selfless and altruistic act, free of all refutation, that all can agree on, I will send them thousands of pounds through the post. This offering of prize-money, by the way, is not a selfless act because I would feel most happy with myself to make someone else that little bit richer (and also because there is no prize-money at all therefore I would be losing nothing).

One note: the only one I can think of is suicide and, yes, this is a very controversial thing to say but I am not without reason.

    Making someone you hate happy...

ex:...My ex, i hate the son of a bitch, i wouldnt piss on fire to put him out, hes not worth my spit.  A truly altruistic act would be me, oh i dont know...giving him my car and a thousand dollars...This of course would please him...that of course would not please me or give me the slightest bit of pleasure.  I would hate my self for being so god damned nice to such an asshole, not only that but i would lose $1,000.00 and my car, all for someone id rather see dead than alive...

one could argue "oh youd feel good, bc even tho you hate him you looked past it and were the bigger person by being so nice and genrous, what you did will make you feel good about yourself"...

Wrong...what i did would make me feel like i was retarded, stupid, nieve, etc...i would get no ounce of satisfaction or pleasure, id hate myself for the rest of my life.

There...im ready for my prize money : )

Since altruism is devotion to the welfare of others, there are many acts that can fit under this description. If you mean by 'totally' altruistic that there can be no emotion involved with the act by the giver there may not be any.

A person has to feel something for self from any altruistic act, so I guess the least gain along with truly wanting to help has to be involved with the best answer. I understand what starchini is saying, but can hating the act be altruistic when devotion is part of the definition?

So I will say an act where the person desires to help, has little to give but sacrifices in order to do it without reservation, and does it with complete anonymity would be close to totally altruistic.
