They are counting more than 100 dead people, hundreds of hurt ones and thousand of homeless in Italy after the earthquake that destroyed towns and roads in Abruzzo, in the heart of my country. Only 3 hours driving distance from my city.

No one of mine relatives is hurt.
But I have a cousin who lives in Abruzzo. Luckily he was in my city to visit my uncle last night. He is married with two young boys.

I got a phone call right now from my mom. They are still shocked and they actually felt the  waves last night. But no damages to our city.

Its horrible seeing the pictures on internet and the videos.
I didn't grab the magnitude of this event until this morning when i went to read the news and my mom called.

Paganica (you can see it in the link) is completely destroyed. So much beauty and history...all gone....and the people....I went to visit the medieval town years ago.

You can read the story here.

My friend Niky promised to call me again later. We have a mutual friedn who lives in Abruzzo and she still didn't get hold of her.

Ginger, I thought of you when I heard this morning of the earthquake.  I wondered about your family.  I am glad they are all safe and I hope you hear good news about your friend.  The damage is heartbreaking.

Wow, well I hope your friend is OK.  I heard about this on the news this morning and while I don't have anybody over there, it was still upsetting to hear about and to see the news reels of.  I'll keep any of your friends and family in my thoughts, hoping that they'll be OK.

I ache for all of the people who did lose loved ones, homes, history...it's horrible. :( But I am glad your family is safe, and I hope the mutual friend you haven't heard from is also safe. It's always so hard to wrap your mind around things like this, that it can all change in an instant.

    Un-eek......thank you very much.

The loss is at so many levels, you know......we are a small country...our city are all tightly tied together...the buildings are centuries old...history has been swept away in seconds...present lives and history are so intertwined in my country....its heartbreaking...

    ginger,
I'm sure you don't, but your heart and love of Italy will shine through in what you write.

I just read about this. It sounds devastating and I thought of you at once. I'm happy it did not harm your family but so many families are suffering. It's very sad and they will be in my thoughts and prayers.

The first person I thought of when I heard this news this morning was you. I'm so glad to hear your family is safe, Ginger.

    Such a tragic loss.

ginsoul- I think everyone on this site thought of you and your family when hearing about this and I am no exception. I read about it earlier on my homepage. We all love our 'Italian girl' and I'm so thankful your family is safe and my thoughts are with your friends. This has to be very hard on you.

So much suffering in that beautiful country with it's beautiful people, art and architecture. I truly feel for you and your people.

When I read about this I immediately thought about you and your family and I hoped they were all safe over there. I'm glad they are. But it's still so sad that all those other people died and all of that historical architecture is just gone. I hope you get a hold of your friend soon too...

Woman......thank you....they need all the possible help. I am finally at home and i am watching video after video on YouTube and the Italian television channels. It breaks my heart to listen to their beloved voices and see their expressions. Its cold right now and it rains.  And they are going to spend the second night in the open.  So many ederly are left with no more homes, belongings, nothing. Too many little children have been killed.

Zayda......thank you....the loss is still no-measurable, i think.....the shock is still so fresh...with the incoming weeks it will sink in all the harsh entity of this catastrophy.
No one can already grab all its gravity.

BeyBey.......thank you.....thank you for your words....the people like me, who lives so far away from their native country feel homesick each single day but when events like this one hit their county its hard being away.
I am in pain for the people and the places, for all that beauty and history gone forever and the loss of so many lives.

Kyle......thank you.....my friend emailed me earlier and she finally got in touch with our friend. She lives in L'Aquila, the capital of the region, but last night she was vistign afriend in a buidlifn that has bnot been destroyed byt he quake. Her home seems in good condition too. She has been lucky but she said she will sleep in her car tonight. Like all the people there. Actyally, its already 5 in the morning in Italy.

Secret......thank you....my mom called me again and she said my cousin's home seems holding well. But one of his friend had lost everything....car, home, belonging, and he has a baby girl of 3 months old ...horrible..

Rolling....thank you....the quake has been the most powerful in Italy in the last 30 years. It has been so strong to damage also ancient structures in Roma. The famous Roman Baths of Caracalla has been damaged in one section of their walls.....i dont want even imagine a quake so poweful to destroy the Colosseo or the Vatican.....it gives me shivers...

I read an article; it's heartbreaking. My grandparents are from Italy. Most of my relatives are over here but he still does have some there. I'll have to ask him if he heard about the quake, because he doesn't watch much television and he certainly doesn't have the internet.
  • gingersoul said on Apr 06, 2009....
Pleasant.....thank you......do you know from which region of Italy are they from?I hope none from Abruzzo....

Glad your relatives are unhurt ginger. God is good. Hope the most affected part of Italy recovers from the losses and damages.

    ginger - this is a terrible  tragedy. Most of all because of the loss of human life.....over 100! I am so glad your family is safe. What a terrible shock! Not as important by a long way but the world has lost history and culture, now gone for ever. Irreplaceable! But of course the loss of human life is so shocking. {{{{hug}}}}

Lio.....thank you.....yes, my family is all fine....my cousin is still with my uncle...they say the two little ones are more than happy to have this extra time with granpa and granma....:-)

Rupey... .thank you....unfortunately the toll of death reached over 250 at this point...and countless the people who lost their homes. The Government created a tent-city outside the perimeter of the towns (where the earth is still trembling, btw). They slept there. Now those who can't leave and with no other place to go will start teh long waiting for help.
Knowing the elephantiac way in which my country deals with tragedy i just feel so sorry for this people...they risk to be live in those tents for months.....

MsStar......thank you very much for your words.......

Scipio......thank you ....i dont know, watching the tv news it seems that the majority of those who are more damaged by the quake are the older ones...

See, that kind of Italy is still a direct expression of the agricoltural society of the '50 and '60. Not much has really changed. Many of these old people has never left those little medieval towns...and now they have to deal with this...

Wishy.....thank you very much....hugs to you.

Thank you GS for your insight. No amount of words can comfort those who have been directly affected by this calamity. Only pray that the rescue efforts doesn't get bogged down due to bureaucracy and theivery and that aid to the victims is speedily available to bring them some sense of relief to their already tired bodies and souls.

I know I am late here, but I did think about you when I heard the news, and now that I am on here, I looked to see what your last post was.  I'm so glad your family is all right, and I'm sad to hear about the devastation and lost lives in your beautiful country.

    Rupey....you have a very compassionate soul ....{hugs to you}

Scipio.....yes, this is what i am honestly afraid of now....the usual zoo around the national tragedies, the vultures that are already taking advantage of it, the macabre dance of the false hopes and the false promises...

Wombie....thank you so much....yes, my family is fine....my friend too...my mom was telling me that her old nanny was from one of those towns...she was wondering if her family too could be homeless right now....hope no.....
  • EvilTwin said on Apr 12, 2009....
I'm glad to hear your family and friends are all okay.  Very scary!  [Hugs]

My heart goes out to all those affected by the quake...

Sorry I am posting about this so late, but...well, I've not really been online all of last week.
  • gingersoul said on Apr 12, 2009....
ET....oh, no need to apologize...i know how *busy* you have been, my friend...:-)

But the number of the dead people has reached almost 300 now.....they stopped looking for the one still missing......its way too dangerous and useless going hunting for them underneath all that horrible mess...

A very sad Easter for all of the survivors and Italy...
