ismajosh's Runescape Overview
Lots of people love Runescape. And there are a large number of game players are playing Runescape.. Each people has it's unique opinion on this game. Here we will introduce the ismajosh's Runescape Overview.
Runescape is a browser based MMORPG that surprises its players with content, storyline filled quests, and enough mini-games making creating a clan worthwhile. For a browser based game, it has a lot of places to discover, and baddies to slay somewhat complimenting the decent amount of weapons and magic at your disposal. But what exactly are the good and bad of the game? And why does it sometimes create controversy?
Gameplay
Unlike most mmorpg's, there aren't any stats like dexterity and intellect but instead a wide range of "Skills" that gain experience depending on the style of combat you use with your weapon. Its because of this that a class system does not exist. Yes you can be a mage, archer, or warrior...but the game does a horrible job of allowing you to stay that one course. Its very linear when it comes to a type of "class" system.
It has a very simple way of killing your enemies, you click the monster or player and watch them duke it out, mind your health though and make sure you have a nice amount of food and potions to keep your stamina up. Unlike most MMORPG's, there are not any "Special attacks" you get when leveling up that deals extra damage or buff. Instead your attack is basically either a basic swing of your sword, or a pull at the bow string. Though it lacks any kind of decent attack visual animation, its understandable coming from a browser based MMORPG. This is not to say that there isn't any kind of buffs. Potions can be either made or bought using the life skill "Herblore". Get a vial with water, find the herb and the corresponding ingredient for that potion your trying to make, and you have a easy and rewarding way to buff up your characters power or defense.
While compared to some MMORPG's it may seem a bit lacking, Runescape's fighting and playing style is for the most part, good enough.
Content
This is where, in my opinion, the game excels. While for free members it may seem a bit limiting at times, payed members will always have something to do. Even if you completed every in depth quest, and maxed out all of your life skills and combat skills, you still have a large list of fun mini games to play with friends, or against clans. Plus the fact that multiple quests and mini games are always added, and every year they seem to add a new skill to max.
Which brings me to another point, the skill system. While some games bring the usual "Kill, level, new equipment, and repeat", Runescape finds a way to reward you for doing something else. Tired of slaying monsters? Relax with some fishing and cooking, sell it to the players in need of high healing food. Why not create a house? Add a dungeon or a mini game room in it? Become a master black smiths or a hardy lumberjack! This is a great way to take a break of the sometimes frustrating grind of combat, while at the same time giving you a new reason to continue training.
Though the skill systems do have it flaws, some of them being a bit to useless and less rewarding then others. While getting your agility skill up will allow you to run for a longer period of time and take in game shortcuts, there are not many convenient shortcuts your going to actually end up using. And the running...is sometimes unnoticeable and not always worth the hours of getting it up a few levels. One skill that is considered absolutely useless is fire making. At lower levels creating a fire to cook food anywhere sounds useful, but later in the game your really not going to find yourself doing that. Only reason people max it out is to just have a skill maxed out. Its a good thing its an incredibly easy skill to max or else it would be 100% pointless.
Graphics
This is where the controversy usually kicks in. Countless arguments between friends or groups of forum members about the games graphics. What a lot of people are forgetting is its a browser based game, its going to have its limit. Though that's not to say the games graphics could of been better. Recently a high definition version of the game with better texture and polygon has been released but other then that, it will drive away players who believe visuals conquer game play. You will also run into a few awkward situations where your character will walk backwards, or through a few small items here and there, and why exactly does my character look like he has a sprained ankle when he walks? But for the most part, most people can live with it.
Story
While the game itself doesn't have a very solid story, the in game quests sure do. And other then the rewards, many players do the quests just to see what happens next. Instead of the "Kill 10 goblins and return to me" quests, you will be treated with a in depth and well thought of storyline and even some puzzles to solve along the way. This is defiantly one of the games strong points.
Overall
In the end Runescape is a game that delivers, with a huge world and list of things to do in such a easy to get place (your internet browser), some of you just might wonder why so many people dislike it. But on the other side, you will just be to uninterested because of its somewhat confusing character customization system and lacking graphics. You will either love it, or hate it. Is it worth paying membership? (6 US dollars a month) With its constant updates, i think so.
