2 beers a day that is.......after getting my latest blood work back, I was disappointed to find that my HDL (good cholesterol) was down to 17 (should be over 35)

So I am declaring all out war on my rebelling body!

More exercise......less burgers and eggs.....and beer!

Yes, that's right.....I get 2 beers a day.....supposedly, that can help raise the HDL

I am not really a drinker, but if I have to....I'll do it!

Its the LDL you have to watch carefully, LDL is the bad cholestorol.
  • D6fer said on Mar 28, 2009....
yes I know, but if your hdl is extremely low, it increases your risk terribly.

Welcome to the wonderful world of oatmeal......
  • D6fer said on Mar 29, 2009....
pickers!.....I have been doing the oatmeal thing for months now......I go through one of the big cans (tubs?) every three weeks or so.....I also drink a 12 oz. glass of fresh OJ with it every morning.......my overall cholesterol did go down 6.5% which was great.....but my bad (LDL) went up 2 points and my good (HDL) went down 3 points.......I guess the difference was made up in a decrease in my triglyceride level, which is a good thing too.....the doc actually gave me an A- , since I managed to lose 10 Lbs. in the last 3 months, but I was disappointed with the cholesterol ratio so I started doing more of my own research into the subject of raising the HDL........exercise is the #1 solution.....eating less cholesterol ladened foods is #2......and then having a couple of alcoholic drinks each day will help to raise the HDL.

For those that don't understand cholesterol and how it can effect your health, I suggest you get your blood tested and in the interim, learn as much as you can about it.
If you or someone you care about shows symptoms of medabolic syndrome (large mid section), you might want to take action before it's too late.

Ha, that's a switch ... drinking for your health, literally!
  • D6fer said on Mar 29, 2009....
funny thing is.....we've all heard people that are 95....100 years old...whatever.....talk about their secret to longevity......many of them will say they drink in moderation....common response to that has been that "it must be something else"....but it looks like the oldsters were on to something many years ago!
  • Lucytorial said on Mar 29, 2009....
So eat more avocados, nuts, nuts are a great source of good cholesterol, especially almonds, all kinds of nuts are brilliant and you only need a handful every day, sprinkle them on your oatmeal!

Fish is also great for leveling out your cholesterol D6,
  • D6fer said on Mar 29, 2009....
yes....I have been eating more nuts....and fish too....I buy a lot of sardines lately....they make a pretty good snack....they gross my wife out, but she doesn't like anything other than tuna.
  • Lucytorial said on Mar 29, 2009....
ahhh good old sardines, they are very nice on toast with tobasco sauce and tomato! LOL

Ohh I love pickled fish, they are so yummy, on a platter like an antipesto mix.
  • D6fer said on Mar 29, 2009....
I worked in a fish processing plant in Dutch Harbor Alaska a long time ago....I watched a Samoan man take a bite out of a fresh herring right on the processing line!....I won't go that far....I'll eat them kippered, but not raw!

You fasted before the blood test right?
I'm sure you did, just checking 'cause that will make your cholesterol higher.

Also, what you eat the day before can affect the test.
I had a big cheese feast the night before one of my tests!
    Whoa, not good!
  • D6fer said on Mar 30, 2009....

Good God I love beer! I've been watching what I eat lately... not because I am over weight or anything, just to get more toned for summer.... but to hear that drinking 2 beers can help with good cholesterol.. well hell, I'm all about it!

P.S. I realize that this could be total and utter BS... but I'm running with it anyhow! It's beer thirty!!!

  • D6fer said on Apr 14, 2009....
lagerlady....yeah, I have tried them......I really don't eat too many eggs anyway.....my brother told me about a flax seed meal that you can use in place of eggs in baking....I may try that.
