This
is the most retarded environmental story I've read so far. Apparently, some eco-geniuses in Washington State have enacted a law prohibiting dishwashing liquids high in phosphates. Now facing dishes with food encrustations due to the ineffectiveness of "green" dishwashing detergents, Spokane residents are crossing State lines into Idaho to "smuggle" the good stuff back into their county.

The only thing outlawed is the sale of these detergents, not posession. But the point is, all Washington State has accomplished is to force residents to drive farther to buy soap, thus increasing Spokane residents' automobile carbon footprint and gasoline consumption. It is also very likely driving grocery shoppers across State lines and costing Spokane's local businesses money.

One resident claims to be running his dishwasher on longer cycles, thus wasting more water than he would had more effective detergents been available.

Don't these eco-loonies consider the impact of their stupid programs BEFORE implementing them? Isn't that what they require companies to do before building new plants and facilities? These green-heads are causing more discomfort and pollution than they are reducing!

Oh, but I forgot - this is the State that tried to implement a latte tax some years back.

Truly a blue in the face State. The only redeeming factor is that it's home to the Filson Outdoor Clothing Company.

Uh ... I live in Washington State and I still buy normal dishwashing detergent @ the grocery store ...

Maybe the law is being ignored?
Like the French with ever EU law they don't like.

It's quite possible. I live in Western Washington so I can't speak for the other side of the state ... but we have the normal dish detergent over here.

The law is taking effect in Spokane, according to the news reports. But get ready! It's going Statewide in the near future.

    Your tax dollars at work...

    I wouldn't doubt it, curmudgeon. I really wouldn't doubt it's going state-wide.

The other day I was talking to a friend who has a friend that plows the roads for the town during huge snowstorms.  He said environmentalists have gotten the town to cut way back on use of sand because the excess sand affects the rivers and streams.  And this is in the Northeast where we get a lot of snow!

Skimping on safety for environmental reasons - man, that's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Stopmediabias, the Driving Standards Agency in Britain told the driving instructors to stop teaching engine braking, then the councils ran out of grit, and there was LOADS of crashes.
  • curmudgeon said on Apr 05, 2009....
Why would they teach drivers NOT to use the engine to slow the car? To save on gas or something? The engine is the best way to control speed! That's why I don't want to drive anything but stick!

    What crazies!
