The state (US) with the lowest percentage of adult obesity is Colorado with around 17%.

Wow. That's pathetic. Guys, cook something. Cook, not fry, mind you. McDonald's and most pre-packaged food is not good for you okay?

People are always saying it's their metabolism, which is probably true, but they're also saying it's their genetics. Now, maybe your genetics aren't as helpful for a healthy weight as mine, but it seems quite unlikely that this gene/combination of genes has suddenly become plentiful over the past fifty years. hat has changed? Eating habits, most notably. Also the amount of exercise we get. But I don't want to tell you to get off the computer. Computers are great fun.

Cooking isn't the problem, it might contribute but that isn't the primary problem. Fast food has been around for a long time.

It is the amount exercise, but that isn't it either. The biggest problem is that it has become OK to be fat. You should read my blog on the subject. I like the way you think though, keep up the good work.

There are a huge number of overweight people who don't consider their overweightness--which is all they control--okay. That may be a contributing factor, but I'd blame diet more than acceptedness.

If people didn't think that it was ok they would change their diet. They would excercise. They choose not to because they don't care. They don't care because it has become ok.

You should read my blog on it.

Perhaps if we raised the social pressure sufficiently, it would reduce obesity significantly, but I'm not ready to declare that worth the cost, and I don't think obesity acceptance has increased enough to be the primary cause of the increase.

(I realise I keep switching between 'overweight' and 'obese'. At this point in the conversation, I don't think anything turns on the distinction.)

It doesn't, which is why I haven't called you on it. I won't debate that there are other causes, a lack of activitie, cars, computers, remote controls, fast food, and cheap fast food at that.

I think that acceptance is a much higher than you think. Its gotten so bad that we actually criticize the skinny. We have a fat woman beauty pagent. We have increased the dress sizes so that a lower number means a a higher size. (Which is the reason for the legend that Marilyn Monroe was a size 16) Instead of letting women feel fat about wearing a size 20, we made them into size 16s to kkeep their self esteem up.

From an outside perspective, Americans just have things too dam easy. Its a whole consumer attitude to everything, don't the USA use the most fuel, produce the most garbage etc. etc. The USA is a great country but I think the greatness comes from a few pwople with a whole bunch of freeloader just tagging along. You guys just have everything too easy and too laid out. In most countries it is only the very rich people who can be obese. The others don't get enough food.

Its not genetics or anything else, its an attitude and it won't change quickly.

(coocking, diet and lifestyle habits can change a person, but they won't change a culture.)

this is purely my opinion and based on limited information so don't take to seariously

But it's exactly what I've been saying thenack. Its an attitude of acceptance. Europeans have it easier though, they (you guys I'm assuming but if I'm wrong please don't kill me) are damn near socialist in nature.
