With the advent of HD-DVD and Blu-ray, consumers were given another choice on how to watch their favorite movies in the comfort of their own home. But the technology industry wasn't quite ready. According to reports, the blue laser diode required to read the discs is in short supply. The many supplier, Nichia, reports that the yield rates for blue laser diodes are only at 30%. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray use this particular diode in their units. But this short supply of blue laser diodes will set back further realease on newer HD-DVD and Blu-ray players well into 2007.
