Fuck
every single Republican on Capitol Hill who voted with these liberal hypocrites taxing 90% of bonuses given to execs of financial institutions on the Federal dole.

This kind of taxation comes incredibly close to direct capitation, which is completely unconstitutional. I don't blame Democrats for neither understanding nor honoring the Constitution. It's simply not in their nature to do either. Neither do I blame them for their mob mentality, their class war mentality and their penchant for lynching. That's just who they are and one can no more expect them to behave like intelligent human beings than one could expect a dog not to shit when it needs to.

But the fucking scumbag cowardly Republicans who are going along with this farcical dog and pony show ought to know better.

They ought to know that these financial institutions will simply redefine the word "bonus" and find some other way to compensate their top earners.

They ought to know that these execs will find a way to keep the money.

They ought to know what an absolute abuse of power it is to have the likes Barney Fife (Frank) and that fool Cuomo looking to publicly rake private citizens over the coals just for fulfilling their end of a contractual obligation, and God forbid expecting to be compensated per the terms of the contracts. Oh so now it's OK for government Gestapo to go looking for names? Fuck every single Republican who would go along with such tyranny!

And fuck the hypocrite liberals who shed tear after tear for how Bush supposedly treated jihadist detainees yet now want to have the government string up their fellow citizens, all because you're looking for someone to blame for YOUR troubles. Some human rights advocates you are.

They ought to know that the cost of implementing this idiotic, unconstitutional tax law will cost VASTLY MORE than the revenue it will accrue - WHY? BECAUSE THE FUCKING COMPANIES WILL SIMPLY REDEFINE THE WORD BONUS, YOU CRETINS!!!

This law will solve absolutelty nothing. It is being written and passed in the anger of the moment and making hasty decisions based on popular sentiment is something that Congress is NOT supposed to do.

My question is what is the government doing while the American People are being distracted by this sham? What are the folks in DC up to while our Nation's President yuks it up on late night TV? What's the sleight of hand here?

Just as we're finding that the bonuses were actually protected by Democratic legislators - and fuck every single politician who voted for every hastily passed "stimulus" without reading the fine print - we shall soon see what shenanigans these folks have been up to while they've been getting us incensed over absolutely nothing.

If our economy is really in such dire straits, we need cool, competent heads steering this vessel - not a gaggle of incompetent goons playing to the mob.

This nation is turning into Venezuela by the moment. Unless the Republicans find a pair, The United States of Zimbabwe will not be far behind.

This is what Keith Olberman was almost peeing his pants about reporting on it last night.

Wow - I agree with something Olbermann said? Unbelievable!

Bankrupt companies can't pay bonuses.  They gave these people IOU's and expect you and me, the taxpayer to make good????  What if they'd offered 165 BILLION in bonuses?  165 TRILLION?  I mean, if you don't actually have to MAKE the money you're prmoising, why stop at a paltry 165 mill?  Promise the moon!

Merill Lynch, I understand, pulled teh same Bullshit and the tax monmey taht went to Bank of America paid THOSE bonuses.

This was the right thing to do, but done really badly and it probably won't work because there are too many loopholes.

Not sure what the RIGHT way to do it would have been but some conservatives say that receivership would have been better and that indeed might have been optimal.

We need folks to look over the books of Bank of America, Citi, and AIG that don't have a vested interest in rosy scenarios.

Making good decisions is 10 times harder when the truth is unknown.

What approaches do you favor, Curmudgeon.
Let this slip up go by and be diligent here on out (not necessarily a reasonable course, but very distasteful), fixing it another way?

What about the other financial institutions that can't seem to get their feet under them despite hundreds of billions being handed over with no strings?  (Thank you Bush and spineless (slim) Democratic majority.)

clearly we need new leadership in Congress......very few incumbents should be spared....no one who voted for the 1st bailout let alone the 2nd should be safe....they need to go....drop your affiliation in 2010.....be prepared to vote for the other team.

Holy shit!  Curm this is probably the best post you have ever done.  What has happened to the Republican party?  They have turned into a bunch of whiny wimps.  It is a sad time, hold onto your hat.

    dyingman,

as you asked, here's what I would do: politely ask the folks getting these bonuses to be team players and either refuse to accept the bonuses or give back what they've received. If they decide to take the money, force AIG to terminate their contracts and let them go look for work elsewhere. As quite a few of these big financial institutions are taking government funds, the chances of these AIG execs attaining comparable positions are pretty small. This incident will serve as a warning to other institutions and their executives to find ways of restructuring compensation packages.

As far as government policy - this incident should also serve as a warning to all of us not to allow anyone in the government to brow beat us into hastily approving any policy of monumental cost. As D6 points out, heads in DC should roll for their not reading the fine print and allowing this mess to occur in the first place.

Quite frankly I would think it prudent for a mandatory minimum Congressional reading time of one hour per page before any piece of legislation can be voted on. In other words, if Congress recieves a 1000 page legislative document, at least 1000 hours must elapse before debate and voting can begin. That's not really sufficient time for a full reading and critique of any detailed document, but at least it should be enough to raise red flags. Congress is supposed to be a deliberative body, not a knee-jerk reactionary one.

The Obama Administration has been in the economic fearmongering business since day one, and only now are we realizing the total cost of rushing headlong into enlarging deficits and dubious public works spending. If this economic crisis is truly of historic proportions, we really need calm and steady hands at the wheel who make their decisions deliberately.

I don't expect the Democrats to do this, but I do expect the self-described fiscal conservatives of the GOP to get their act together.

Curm....unfortunately I think that there are far too many "fiscal conservatives" that sold out a long time ago....we have an opportunity next year to try and fix this shit, but it is going to require people willing to give up their party affiliation and get rid of most of the incumbents running for re-election.
  • curmudgeon said on Mar 22, 2009....
D6 - I think it may come to that, too.

    Fuck 'em... Fuck 'em all...

A good friend of mine who has worked religiously on local, state and national campaigns to put Christians into office (even democrats) was furious when Obama won. We ran into our local US Senator on the way to lunch, who had just lost his job via the election -- did I mention that my friend is well off? Anyway -- who was very apologetic and stated, "Give us two years."

What!? Hey, fuck you, man. Until you come groveling, hat-in-hand for your fucking job back, you can suck my left nut! (That's why God gave us two, one to use and the other one to HAVE JACK HOLE PUSSIES SUCK ON!!!)

Seriously, this whole "new wave" conservatism that is nothing more than whining, bed-wetting liberalism repackaged to look like some fucking whacked out form of conservatism is just bullshit.

    FUCK 'EM! FUCK 'EM ALL!!!
