As the population of our country grows, so does the volume of our garbage. Finding the next land fill when the old one is beyond its capacity to hold more garbage is not the solution. If proper waste management methods are not implemented, it will not be long before the entire country and eventually the world will be overtaken by its own garbage.

Garbage poses not only health concerns for people in particular, but to the overall state of our environment. Garbage affects the air we breathe and the water we drink. Garbage is disrupting our ecosystem.

The garbage situation needs a long term solution that is environmentally sound, financially viable for the government, and economically feasible for the people. The method should also be doable and duplicable so that more people can benefit from it.

Having more dumpsites, or even putting up advanced land fills, had never been the solution to the growing garbage problem of a community. In fact, these causes more problems than any, such as air pollution, health hazards, waste leaching to bodies of water, and the disposal of toxic items.

With the dumpsite, people assume that every waste material could simply be dumped there and left forgotten. However, our country’s population is growing and so is the volume of our garbage. It will not take long when we will be overtaken by our garbage and there will be no place left to dump them. We need to transform our garbage and keep the residual wastes to a minimum. We need to RECOVER what we can from our garbage.

Not all that we consider garbage should really be thrown away. Garbage may be categorized into the following: recyclables, biodegradables, and residual wastes. Recyclables can further be segregated into those that can be re-processed and those can be reused as they are. The first category can be plastics and glass that can be shredded/pulverized and made into new items. The second category includes those items that some people consider garbage but others still find useful.

Let’s do our share in minimizing the world’s garbage volume. If we don’t do our simple share, our world will soon be taken by our own garbage.
