I'm off to northern Italy again (mid-week), and this time, you get to come along and see where I'm going. The Temples of Humankind, at Damanhur, an artistic and spiritual community, were dug out of a mountain, by hand, for the first 20 years of their construction which was conducted in secret. When the temples were discovered, some ten years ago, construction picked up, and today, there are seven chambers, each a unique work of art, laden with symbolism celebrating the spiritual advancement of humankind while acknowledging our struggles with the duality that is inherent in our worldly existence, and honoring all the known spiritual traditions of the world throughout history.
The temples were constructed at the meeting place of four synchronic lines, known as the "back of the dragon" in Chinese, which are channels of energy that criss-cross the earth and serve as conduits between the earth and the cosmos. There are only two places in the world where four synchronic lines cross. One is in Tibet, and the other is at Damanhur. The temples of humankind are a work in progress, and it is said that it is only about 10% completed. However, now that modern excavation techniques are being used, the Damanhurians project a much shorter construction time than in the past. The intricate paintings, sculptures and mosaics are still being done by hand, and you can see artists at work as you walk through the temples.
Visiting the temples in person is an amazing experience, but for those of you who aren't able to fly to Italy, come along on a virtual tour of the temples. Let me know what you think. If you're intrigued and want more information about the Damanhur community, you can visit the Damanhur home page. Enjoy!
