Which do you think has the greatest influence on humans? Nature? (Our genetic code) Or nurture? (Our surrounding environment and interactions)

To what degree? (?% / ?%)

I don't know if this can be answered with any good qualification.

I've always leaned slightly to nature with no idea how to give a percentage. Nature provides so many basic attributes - health, physical looks, intelligence (IQ), and that very important brain chemistry.

so....do you think parental influence is futile?

d6- Of course not. Remember, I only said I leaned to nature. Actually, nature provides more in the line of what is provided for potential, nurture teaches and molds. The word 'influence' that you used would probably lead more to think its nurture.

But personally, if I could choose between top potential or top nurturing, I'd choose top potential for myself.

interesting......I think of it just the opposite.....i lean more towards the nurture.....consider a child born to brilliant parents, but not given the tools to succeed....he doesn't stand a chance....but one can be born to total boneheads that read to him...buy him books....limit TV....and he lives up to his potential.

d6- Speaking of the word consider - consider the ever changing world of today coupled with this generation and the quality of today's generation's parents and the future we are building for them.  A person born low on the pole of genetics including health, appearance, IQ, and brain chemistry for natural stability is in a world of hurt in my opinion. Look at statistics and averages.

Besides which, are you saying it is more likely boneheads will buy books and limit tv more than brilliant parents? I doubt it. Each avenue of high genetic make up, especially that of stability of mind and behavior, opens doorways not available to low genetic make up. We are speaking in large generalities here, you do understand that?

yeah.....I kind of figured you might say that, and you are right....more than likely the boneheads wouldn't have the sense to make the right choices....my argument is hypothetical in that case......but what about an adopted child?
