all good points! can I add one? If grabbed from behind, just go floppy limp. There are very few people strong enough to support your weight from this position and you will drop to the ground where you can kick their shins or strike their groin easily. -

I've seen this one before. Good tips except for the one about crashing the car when somebody's got a gun to your head. I think the impact will make him squeeze the trigger whether he wants to or not. -

ginger: If you ever take a reliable self defense class, the first thing they'll teach you never to do to an assailant is to kick him in the balls. Those guys that stalk and hunt down women are on an adrenalin high from the hunt, and kicking him in the balls will have the exact opposite effect that it would have if you walked up to your brother and kicked him in the balls. It will shoot even more adrenalin into his system, and instead of incapacitating him, it will make him super strong... and now he's really pissed. Melanie Murphy of Streetwize, a women's self-defense course in Boulder, Colorado, has done a lot of research on criminal psychology and has studied a lot of case histories, and she is convinced that this is why so many women do not survive an attack. If he wasn't going to kill you in the first place, he sure will if you try that. I would recommend all women to take a reliable self-defense class (NOT Model Mugging, please... they're the idiots who teach you to go for the balls). I'm going to underline this, because it's so important.
