Are you most likely to read a long blog or a short one?
Personally I tend to prefer short blogs...If I see that a blog is too long I may not read it, but if its got a catchy title and description I usually do.

It's the proper spacing that does it for me.

When all the words are crammed together, I often read the same lines twice. When they're spaced out better, it's more conducive to reading, I think.

I think you're right...I once came across a really long blog that wasn't spaced and I found it hard to read. In the end I couldn't remember what I had read :|

I read all types, both long and short ones, provided the spacing is fine and it has been properly writtem, too many errors put me off.. but if the contentis informative and knowledgeable, i take the time to go through it fully...even if it of any length.

SW clued me in about the spacing after I posted a bunch without any.

It really made a difference in my longer blogs.

I tend to put the longer ones to the side and read them when I have more time.

    I do read both types.

It depends on whether or not it's a "wall of words," as PPs have said.

If there aren't enough breaks, just seeing a screen full of words puts me off and I'll skip.

If there are nice, non-Hawthorne-ish (how's that for a bastardization of the English language?) paragraphs with clear divisions, I'm as likely to read a long blog as a short one (unless very pressed for time).

I prefer short blogs. With pictures. Or jokes.

I read both short ones and longs ones as long as there is actual paragraph spacing in them. If there is no paragraphing, I skip it no matter how short it is.

.doesn't matter..as long as it's interesting for me to read. If it gets too long though, my eyes will hurt and I stop reading;P

Depends on moods. If I have ample time, I don't mind the long one. But Just-nice is the best. Not to long and not to short. Again, what's the post is about, that plays important part too :)

    Hi allaroundgirl,

For me since I like to read, I read through the whole blog rather it short or long does not matter. Secondly, some blogs are posted to draw you I think. Furthermore, I find the blogs with a catchy title seem to draw me in--they seem to be saying read me.

Also when other members respond to my blogs. I find I want to learn what they are writing about as well.

I read both short and long blogs. However as GrapeKoolaid says it, spacing it properly is important. If I a see a long blog but written in a single paragraph, then I would give it a pass. Spaced properly even long blogs become readable.

I have a tendency to post long blogs. Please pay a visit and tell me whether I should be less wordy.

kilometric sentences and paragraphs, not laced with proper spacing, is what makes me think twice whether to proceed to fully read a post.
  • pinkjellybeans said on Aug 30, 2006....
I think huge amounts of text can be quite intimidating but, like someone else said, spacing is key. If everything is paragraphed well, it makes it easier to read.

Personally, I prefer blogs which are to the point, i.e. short but detailed. Masses of pasted text is a total no-no!

I feel a bit redundant chiming in on this one...

Spacing is very pleasing to the eye. This is probably the only world where I am permitted a one sentence paragraph, and people are thankful. I think it has something to do with the harsh glare of a computer screen.

Anyway, I am something of a reader. I also read a little faster than the norm, so length is not so much of an issue.

What is more likely to put me off is an overabundance of spellings or typos, but only if the meaning is obstructed.

I like stories, humor, something that forces me to stop and think. I want to ponder, to answer a question.

I'm very new to blogging. Started like 1-2 weeks ago. Knew nothing about blogging. Just wanted to gripe some & wrote what I think to be long blogs, then I started reading others & found many are quite short. Interesting. Well, long or short is fine with me. It just has to appeal to me.
  • hotaka said on Aug 30, 2006....
I write long ones and I don't expect they will be read by many. I will read long blogs if the subject interests me. If it's too long I skim over some parts. Short blogs are easier. But I don't like reading blogs with too many grammatical errors or email language abbreviations. I don't care to take the time to decipher the codes.

I am glad you brought this up. It drives me nuts that on blogs you can't indent paragraphs or if you can I sure don't know how. Generally, if I were writing an essay, I wouldn't have a gap between paragraphs like this:

Unless of course I was doing one paragraph about a character in one scene and then the next paragraph was in another geographical area altogether.

But the gap increases readability. If you were paying me to write for your website, would it be normal to have all these gaps? I miss the paragraph indentations.

Do I read long blog posts? Yes. Want to know why? Because I resent it being such a fast food microwave world where no one takes the time to read anymore. Have we become a culture of one-liners and text messages? Would we want Steinbeck's novels to be reduced to Short Stories? I don't want to be a lazy reader or a lazy writer. And I don't want short shallow paragraphs if I can help it.

Granted, poetry can be short and have great depth in the hands of a skillful poet. But I'd hate to think I'm only reading blogs that are short and skipping all the more in depth stuff.
Has everyone stopped reading already because this reply was too long?
  • chingform said on Aug 30, 2006....

i write long and short blogs...i read really interesting
    ones...there's a limitation though--i don't have fast
internection connection. we use dial up here, which
is loaded by the prepaid card i buy. so if i read long
    blogs, im wasting my time...

Ditto, as long as it's interesting. I'm game. The longest topic I have read on here was "My Last Sermon".....very interesting! And the comments seem like they went on forever.

  • varada said on Aug 30, 2006....
If it is interesting long blogs are read. But sometimes it is boring.
As mentioned above, spacing of sentences gives relaxation to the eyes.
Selection of font and the colour is also helpful.
But the most important is the subject of the blog.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 30, 2006....
It's not a matter of lenght, but interest. If a blog is interesting it doesn't matter how long can go.
Quality, not quantity is my measurement tool.

I like blogs that have a nice block of sentences and space between them.
  • elleb84 said on Aug 30, 2006....
Length doesnt matter(in this case), what makes me read is whether the topic is interesting or not...
  • Anselm said on Sep 01, 2006....
If a post is sufficiently short, I'll have read the entire thing before realizing it's not worth reading.

For me, the optimal size is several paragraphs, but usually no t over a page or two. There are exceptions: programming blogs with code and stuff included are often expected to be longer. These things can be like mini-tutorials. Just make sure longer posts are skimmable. As everyone else has said, paragraphs. (A girl in my freshman English course once asked about our papers, 'do we have to, like, break them up into paragraphs?')
  • SoulCasterer said on Sep 04, 2006....
    both.

i read the first few sentences. if i find it interesting enough then i continue.
