"Too often over the past decade, the fight against terrorism has been viewed as a zero-sum battle with our civil liberties," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a speech a few hours before the documents were released. "Not only is that school of thought misguided, I fear that in actuality it does more harm than good."

Today the Obama Administration released many secret Bush Administration memos which begins return to American values. Many will want to debate the merits of the Bush administration policies, but that misses one of the core issues, this was all done in secret with no input from the American people. Secretly repealing the Constitution, as was clearly and admittedly done by the Bush Administration, is not only undemocratic, it's diametrically opposed to the values layed out by our Found Fathers.

This is not an academic discussion. The Bush administration secretly asserted the power to spy on Americans without warrants, detain anyone without charges, and torture them. All of these things were done, and they the decisions were made in secret behind a veil of fear. Now we learn that the government has actively attempted to cover up the most powerful evidence of their actions, video taps.

"The Obama administration also acknowledged in court documents Monday that the CIA destroyed 92 videos involving terror suspects, including interrogations — far more than had been known."

thankyou for posting some sane commentary about Obama

here at soul cast there is a desire to blame the economic disaster upon the new administration. i wonder if these people actually listen to their reasoning

no this is not a debate. what you stated are facts. and many more will be coming to light

especially the private prison scandal that cheney and gonzolas were involved in. the media is still keeping quiet about this.

God Bless our new President in these trying times

Are those the same American values we had when Bill Clinton invented extraordinary rendition?  Or murdered people in Waco and Ruby Ridge?  The same values we have when the world discovered he was fingering interns in the oval office?

If any of what you stated about the Bush administration is true he would have not made it 8 years.

I'm still waiting also, all these liberals here on Soulcast and no-one can seem to back up any of the claims they make, that's typical.

They are the American ideals laid out by our founding fathers. The ideal that all people have the right to a trial, and that the executive is not a king or dictator. Bush certainly isn't the first President to violate these ideals, but his behavior is alarming for anyone that cares about civil liberties. Much of the information is still secret and we need to shine some light on what was really going on.

Well said, but "all" people don't have a right to trial.  Enemy combatants are held until hostilities have either ceased or diminished greatly.  What these detainees got was unprecedented and way more than they deserve.  Would Al Qaeda give us a Bible and three squares a day along with exercise?

I don't agree that Bush violated anything.  All these Democrats knew what was going on and agreed with it.  When it became politically unfavorable to them they stabbed him and the country in the back.

I don't think you read the link I provided. These were powers asserted over Americans and there wasn't a legally declared war.

What's most disturbing is that these powers were asserted in secret. The Bush administration secretly declared the power to violate The Constitution. If they had come out and asked the American people for these powers during trying times it would be a completely different situation.

A President's authority trumps the constitution when the security of his people are in question, and of course it was done in secret do you want to just tell the enemy what we are planning?  It is the same thing when Bill Clinton searched Alrich Ames' house without a warrant.  He didn't violate the constitution because our nations security was in question.

You guys seem to see some big conspiracy.  What exactly would you have done shortly after 9/11?

People willing to sacrifice freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both....
I've been away for a week and am catching up on the Bloc's torture nonsense....
Oh my God! Bloc and I have agreed on "two things in a row." As much as I wish he'd quit beating a dead horse on the whole torture debate and blaming Bush for everything from global warming to the changing of the seasons, where does the line get drawn?...
Stoning is a barbaric practice that continues in Iran up this very day!
Will this come to America next?
