There are rules of thumb for everyday situations that can help guide you in your decision making and help keep you in the know...
I came across a great website for this. It has a wealth of information and is very entertaining, to say the least. It's goal is to, "...gather every rule of thumb on earth into one gargantuan, easily searchable online reference database that will be accessible from anywhere in the world and continue to grow forever."
I think they are on to something here...
