Huh, that's shocking ... for as much money as these people have, and as much as they're in the media eye, you'd think they'd at least tip well!  Although it is understandable if their wait staff was actually doing a poor job.

I can vouch for those bad tippers, I once (now I am old) waited on Lawrence Welk's band of renoun.. 2 of us waited on these guys... we got.... oh, about 50cents total.  They were obnoxious too.  They got excellent service too, btw.

Yeah, there are alot of people who have money and are cheap.
I think being cheap when you have more than your share, is the worst personality trait- maybe because it shows how selfish a person can be- or how self absorbed.  It also speaks to how much a person is really willing to help out his fellow man.

I read somewhere that Joe Biden made $320,000 last year and gave $995 to charity.  That's 1/4 of 1%.  And that was a generous year for him as it turns out-  2007 was the most Biden had given to charity since 1996.

I like where I live, tips are rare but we get paid decent wages here...  I usually tip if the service, food and ambience is good, usually on a bill of $150 I'll tip $20 bucks.. but thats it, as I said we get a whole heap better wages here than you guys do in the US.  Tipping is not required, but pleasant.

hege- Although they do give individual examples, ratings aren't given out for one occurrence, so bad service would not answer for these people. There are several books written about this.

quiet- So many are so demanding and leave nothing. Somewhat unbelievable.

fraggles- My wife likes him too.

secret- Speaking of self absorbed, while looking through the internet on this, I ran across a story about Justin Timberlake. He checked into a hotel once and demanded a mirror on the ceiling. Then he demanded the staff look only through  the mirror at him, not to look at him directly. If I owned the hotel, the bastard would never stay there.

lucy- The highest wages for servers I've heard of in US is minimum wage, many make $2.50 to $3.50 an hour. Restaurants have lobbied for low wages so they will have to rely on tips, typical of American business.

BeyBey....told ya.....my Johnny is always the gentleman i know he is.....:-)

Btw.....in Italy we don't have this barbaric habit....the workers are paid with a salary. The salary is measured based upon their years and level of experience and also by the level of the business.
You can leave a tip, but its all up to you. They don't expect anything from the customers.

Its true though that in certain situations this can lead to bad service....servers feel like they can be lazy, taking their time in bringing you food or even being rude to you...
I have never experienced anything bad anyway...

ginsoul- I like the 'barbaric habit' term. In Mexico its even worse. People from Mexico told me better server jobs are purchased by the prospective employee. Then they are paid nothing and in some cases return a percentage of their tips to the owner.

I've almost never received 'bad' service. If something is wrong, its usually from the kitchen and you can't punish the server for that.

I like Johnny Depp too. In fact, I pretty much like all the people on the good tipper list, and not necessarily on the other list. You hear things about people, being self absorbed like secret mentioned.

I was a server once...  I can say from experience that Scottie Pippen was a lousy tipper.

You should never mess with people who bring you food.  Not that I personally did any dastardly deeds, but I did witness some hygenic mishaps (as in dinner rolls dropped on the floor that was picked up, dusted off and put on a salad plate, or a plate of fajitas dumped on a booth collected and put on a fresh skillet).

My buddy was a pizza delivery guy for a while and he may have flipped a few pizza boxes upside down and may have spit in a few bags of salad...

I make it a point to be nice to these people and tip them well if they do a good job.  I will not however, take any crap from them, or tolerate bad service.  It's too bad that they don't make crap, but if they don't like it, they could go somewhere where they do.

madonna is cheap??? no wonder she's the material girl... ;-)

grape- I'm kind of like ginger in that I've not really experienced anything bad. Only twice in my life has service been lousy and it was the same place which we've never returned to. Several times I've had uncooked food, so has my wife, and the servers agreed it had to go back.

One thing we truly don't like is male servers dressed to expose leg, chest, and underarm hair serving food. We've seen this several times and never went back there either.

queenie- Several of these surprised me. The one that surprised me most was Bill Cosby.

beyond~ This really was interesting but I was wondering where the information came from. I have to question things and I don't always believe what I read. I tip generously and when the service is good/I believe a need exists, I tip way more than I can really afford. (sounds like the bleeding heart I am, doesn't it Secret??!! lol)
  • quietone said on Mar 01, 2009....
LOL I just remembered a time when I left a really lousy tip because of very poor service.  the restaurant was not even busy, so that was not an issue.  I left a quarter... yup.. an insult.  he was bad.  And, he had the nerve to follow us out into the parking lot and say... "hey, I think you need this quarter more than I do".  I took it and said "okay, thanks" and never went back.  I agree, it has a lot to do with service... being a server from the past.  I can be very picky, but also a bleeding heart too if I see someone is at least trying.

woman- Google 'celebrity tippers' for all the info you want. One of the sites I used was, I think, 'the 34 worst celebrity tippers' - don't remember what the other was.

quiet- I've seen male waitresses do a lot of things including follow customers into the lot, usually for their tip. I've never seen a girl do that, but girls have pride, honor, and common sense.
  • Lucytorial said on Mar 01, 2009....
that is rediculous! waiter/ress' here earn up $25 per hour, standard wage is $19/20 you would not get a single person willing to work for 2.50 pfft! amazing :-O
