Holy Frijole!

Im shocked!  shocked I say!

I was just soooo sure that I had excellent credit.

I was always able to get my credit report for free, but needed to pay money to see the score.  Whenever I saw the report, it looked great.  I had a bunch of different kinds of accounts open, all with minimal balances and plenty of credit available.  I had one black mark against me.  Back when I was young and stupid I fucked up a checking account and had a hell of a time getting out of the hole, finally my parents bailed me out but the damage had been done...That was years ago...

Any whoo, i assumed that one "bad" thing wasnt that big of a deal because I had sooo many "good" things.  I mean c'mon, a measly $300.00 dispute that was settled yers ago versus twenty open, and in excellent standing other accounts.  I figured that one little thing would be drowned out by all the good ones...

NOPE!  I found a site that gave me my credit report and score for free if i signed up for this free thirty day trial, after the 30 days id be charged $12.00 a month for whatever service they were offering.

I figured Id g'head and give them my credit card info and once I saw my report Id call the number and cancel right away so I dont get charged anything...

According to experian my credit score is "Fair" on a scale of:
VERY POOR........POOR........FAIR........GOOD

Fair?!  I know thats only one less than good but c'mon!!!

Turns out my actual credit score is 653...

According to statistics, my credit score is better than 40% of the population.

I spose thats nothing to sneeze at...but it was quite a downer sense I went in thinking I had great credit...

653....out of a possible 830...I spose 177 points less than perfect isnt so bad...

Its pretty middle of the road...according to experian
"Most lender would consider you average"

Yuck, i hate that word "average"....

Do you know your credit score?

Id recommend getting it, as you can see from me your "report" can be misleading.

Is 653 bad or good compared to all the soulcasters out there?

Oh, if you wanna do what I did go to:

www.lendingtree.com

They ask for you card number so you can sign up for the "30 day free trial"  but no need to worry.  I called customer service 5 minutes after looking at my score and cancelled with no complications.

I think mine is like 2.  It sucks and I don't even bother to apply for anything.  I have basically double divorce credit complicated by major injury medical bills credit.  With time it will improve.

BTW, you might want to consider closing any open credit lines you're not using.  When lenders look at that they see a potential liability, not that you're credit worthy.  Keep one major card, shred the rest and it will improve your credit and lendability.

UNI-  huh...interesting...i heard different...I was told that the more available credit you have the better, whats bad is when you have a bunch of maxed out cards...Im sure you understand what im saying as is and i dont need to say anything more but as you know lol....i have an insatiable need to over explain myself... Hear I go...

Say i have a $1,000 limit on a credit card and my balance is $100.00...That means i have $900.00 of available credit, i was told that improves your credit score to have multiple lines of credit open with low balances.

Say I have a $1,000 limit on a credit card and my balance is $900.00...that means I have $100.00 of available credit,  i was told that would reflect negatively on my credit score...bc my available credit would be low...

Lets say I got rid of the credit lines that were paid off and cancelled them...that would lower my available credit...i would think that would be bad...

Whos your source?  Where did you get this info!?  Your throwing off my entire understanding of credit!

Let me quickly reference my 5 minute old credit report.....huh, doesnt say much...okay, let me hop on the internet real quick...got it...

    according to this site  http://money.howstuffworks.com/personal-finance/debt-management/credit-score3.htm

oh gosh uni....my realtor just called, someone else is about to make an offer...

well, I'm not sure where you're getting your info on that credit lines deal.  I'm basing mine on working with mortgage lenders on various things I've financed in the past.  That and having worked for accountants right out of college.

Their logic was if you have a line of credit for $1000 and only have a balance of $100, you could run out after you get the loan and charge up another $900 and then you'd have to make a larger payment on the balance.  So if you have the potential to run up large debts it works against you.  Might be a way to just reduce the credit limits on those cards as a happy medium.

I have noooo idea.. but then I'm still a student.. papa pays for keepin me alive.. hehe.. and I've never earned anything.. he handles my accounts.. the only thing I do is withdraw money from my ATM when I need it!! I dont even know what to do in a bank! Sucks I know.. I'm still a kid. But parents in India dont want their kids to start earning until they finish studies.. education is of paramount importance and jobs and money could be a distraction.. so thats how it goes. I doubt I would even have a credit score! I do have a credit card for shopping.. I barely use it though! And call my dad every time before swapping it.. hehe..

Hmmm, you've made me curious Star ... think I'm gonna go check out these things and see what I can find out!

K, getting all signed up and whatnot at Experian .... waiting for shit to load ... man this takes forever ... and the wait is killing me!  AND I'm paranoid that my internet will decide to go on the fritz and disconnect.  Oh what have I gotten myself into!  Lol.  Huh, well, at least now I know.  Apparently my score is 691 (still considered Fair).  However, there was an account on there I do not recognize at all.  So I'm gonna have to call and find out what it is.  Which I am going to do right now before I have a panic attack.

Oh yeah, and then, wouldn't ya know it ... I save a copy of my credit report, its a PDF file ... and I forgot, I didn't re-download Adobe Reader!  Argh, lol.

Uni, I got my info at the link i gave ya...You mean to tell me that the internet has falsifications on it?  *GASP*...I believe you, seems to me your credentials are far superior to my googling.  : P

Diabolic,  you are a very lucky girl : )  And if that credit card you have is in your name, yes you do have a credit score.  And since daddy pays it im sure its in good standing and your credit is excellent.

Hege!  691!  Youve got me beat!  Good for you!  Dont forget to cancel your 30 day free trial thingie!  i dont wanna be responsible for hege getting a $12.00 charge on her account every month.  Thats cool you caught a possible error.  I tried to dispute my one black mark a while ago, they had promised me that once it was paid they would take it off the credit report and years after its been paid it was still there.  I "disputed" it and they pretty much told me to fuck off...i guess i shoulda got that promise in writing...ah well, live and learn, and then get luvs...Let me know what happens with that mysterious account.

Star~I believe that Uni is right here. From what I have read the very fact that you have all those cards does not look good. I read that everytime you apply for credit your score goes down. My score is pretty high and I keep one card and only use it for traveling or online ordering. You will build your score up, as you age, if you pay your mortgage, car, etc., on time, and keep credit to a minimum. Not to fret you can improve your score. Youth is on your side.

mine rather pretty much sucks. it's like 534 or something. I think that was Poor.
mine is because i have NO credit. that's why my score is so low....i have no credit cards ....nothing.
and a couple bad marks from far in the past.
you need at LEAST one credit card in good standing to have even decent credit. .....i don't know about having many cards though.

oh...and i checked mine about a month ago....and scatterbrain that i am...forgot to cancel it. ....it hit my bank account......i have a joint account with my dad...and he has it rigged so it emails him every time it goes below 50 bucks. otherwise he stays out of it..... needless to say....it put it below 50 bucks....cause i rarely use that account....and dad calls me and says what's this thing that charges every month???

    so i'm in trouble. :P

Star, ha, I found out what that mysterious account was.  I called the contact number for it and it was for my Dell Premier account (so I don't have to pay for things outright).  It was labeled as something for Citi Bank though ... and I have a Citi Bank credit card which was already listed, so I couldn't figure out why there were TWO things from Citi, lol.  It said nothing about Dell on the report.  No problem though, I got it figured out and everything was correct.  I called and cancelled about 5 minutes after I read the initial report, 2 minutes after I called to figure out the mysterious thing was Dell.  So now I know my score, have my credit report saved to print out later and will not be billed a penny!

Woman what is many?  I mean, I have a few, all in good standing.

I have a Maurices credit card, $680.00 limit, $50.00 balance.

I have a Lane Bryant credit card $400.00 limit, zero balance.

I have an Amazon Chase Credit Card, with only pennies on the balance.

I have a Menard's Big Card $1,000 limit, and thats maxed out, I used it to buy my bathroom vanity and my dishwasher.  lol, dont give me grief over that, those were necessitites! lol...

I have a Nelnet Student Loan, $3,000 balance, was $6,000, Im good with those payments, ive been paying that off sense I graduated from Beauty School.

I had a $16,000 loan for my Lap Band Surgery, that balance is all the way down to $4,000.  Im pretty proud of getting that loan paid off so soon, ive only had it for just over a year.

The things im most focused on paying off are the ones with high interest rates and balances.  I am working on paying my Menard's card off and my Nelnet Student Loan as soon as possible.  My student loan interest rate is outrageous!!!  And my menard's card, well, its never good to have anything maxed out. : P  ....

Im gonna prolly cancel my clothing store credit cards....There really is no need for my Maurices and Lane Bryant cards.  I think ill keep my Menard's Card and my Chase Card, then ill have two in good standing.

Im with you fallyn, i think having too many cards might be bad but having a few is necessary.  Phil had no credit when i met him.  When we got engaged i put him on my visa as a cardholder so that should reflect positively and he just opened up his first checking account last week...hes 32 frickin years old.  I had my first checking account when i was 11, i was born with a savings account.  Fallyn, you mean you forgot to cancel the automatic charge thingie for you credit score?  Ouchie, that sucks soooo bad.  I used to be forgetful with crap like that all the time, it really got me in deeeeep shit...Thank goodness you caught it though before you overdrafted.

Thats great hege!  I always feel a bit clever when I take advantage of these sorts of things.  lol, when I called to cancel the gal on the phone asked me "May I inquire as to why you want to cancel your free trial with 30 days left?"  I told her straight out "Sure, Im cancelling now bc I only signed on to get my credit score, I have my credit score and If I wait to cancel I will forget, I have no need for your services, thank you for the trial".   hehe...She smirked a little bit and asked me how my score was, i pretty much told her what i told you guys.  Pretty neat though!

Oh Dear. It sounds like you think I was being critical of you. I wasn't. I was just telling you what I know. I would still keep your cards to a minimum. Even though it looks like you are working very hard on paying down your debt and you should be proud of yourself, you do still have dept. They compare your debt to your assets and that might be great in your case. That's what I was saying, it will get better if you keep making good decisions and keep concentrating on getting rid of the debt you still have. Off the subject, how are you feeling? When is your due date? And how is the house thing coming?
  • starchini said on Feb 26, 2009....
no no woman, i didnt think you were being critical at all silly!  I wanted to know what you thought was many cards?  Then i wanted to tell you what cards i do have so you can tell me if its too many...as far as assets, yea, not many of those..I own my car and the shirt on my back, thats about it...The reason i was curious about my credit score is bc of the house i want...Initially Phil applied for it bc it "appears" as though he makes more money than me, i thought that was important for approval, but his credit is much worse than mine.  So now im thinking about applying on my own even though i make less than him, my credit is better...My due date is May 16th...Lil'Remy, is kicking like mad,  i can feel it so intensely now, its crazy,  last night i actually saw him kick me!  Im feeling ok, im just super stressed right now...there is a lot going on...
  • woman said on Feb 26, 2009....
Good. The school teacher in me can make me sound bossy. Glad you didn't take it that way. You have a lot going on right now, don't you. I hope things are going well with the house. Can you apply together. Did you say your parents would cosign? That should make a big difference. I have the feeling that Lil'Remy isn't going to be that little!! Sounds like the baby is healthy. Try to stay calm and be happy. You've got a lot of reasons to be.
