blueshark lagoon 227b

Years ago, I was a child who found the sea a
playful friend.
My first steps, taught by tiny crabs that pranced against the salty wind.
Twenty summers swiftly passed, and the lonely mermaid swam away,
Leaving me with river frogs and algae pool in monsoon gray.

Long I hid in hidden coves. But blue waves teased my eyes
With droplets of a starlit dome and sapphire sand in distant skies.
Can you reach that orchid island yonder? the purple dolphins dared.
Their alien music sounded strange. But I sang the songs I heard.

Hence this spray of blue poems, I ride across the sea.
Aquamarine crystal clouds they slice, my eagle wings now free.
On flower-scented hills, this armored shadow now reclines
To float and drift and dream again on ancient rocks of time.

    hi paper.
guess where i was (or where i was heading) when i wrote this poem? ((wink))
thank you, friend. you always have one of the nicest (and often, earliest) comments.

    hi ddame.
it's a poem with a very personal meaning. but i think you get it too. ((wink))
one thing for sure: it wasn't written in bengaluru or mumbai. lol.
thank you too for nice comment, friend.

    hi memy.
i think we are both made of the same fire and water stuff, pretty lady.
oh, i swear, you won't believe how incredibly blue and crystal-clear the water is in this half-forgotten corner of the world.
i like rivers too. a river has a very different character than the sea, but in the end it becomes one with the sea.
thank you again, friend, and you take care too.

ate papel, i know you have poetry in you, a-waitin' and a-wantin' to burst out in full riot, like cherry blossoms on a nippy spring day.

the beauty of poetry is not just in the shape and sound that words make.
it's in the intricate layers of thought and feeling, drawn from our most personal wells of experience, that go into the writing of the poem.
it's these layers that impart power to simple phrases, and (hopefully) conjure a magical world in the mind of the reader.

  • Alyss said on Feb 22, 2009....

you know, i always think of myself (never of others) "lazy" and "cowardly" when i resort to poetry to express my fear, confusion, frustration, anger, happiness, ecstasy...all kinds of emotion...

...it warms my heart to read how you view poetry...

...just recently I saw this quote...(I meditate on it when I stress on my need for cathartic writing)....

“If you want me to give you a two-hour presentation, I am ready today. If you want only a five-minute speech, it will take me two weeks to prepare.” —Mark Twain

...it reminds me, at this point in my life, I cannot be a literary writer because of my priorities....I need to just resort to whatever surviving skills I have...lol

    ...my apologies, out of tangent....

    hi alyss.
i was born and raised in a seaside city, and as kids our parents brought us to the beach or waterfront almost every weekend during summers.
but like you, i never saw a beach that was so chlorine-blue (your color word's better...topaz) as that one in the picture.
the blue deepened at 5, 10 meters, but the water remained crystal-clear, and you could see the coral formations on the seabed.
maybe i should post more pics.
    thanks for dropping by, friend.

    ((waves again to ddame.))

    hi infernal.
a short backgrounder for you, my poetic friend.
when the first tenuous strands of this post formed in my head a week ago, the predominant feeling was that one i felt when the pic was taken -- that of swimming to the island in the distance.
the feeling of exploring the unknown, the feeling of trying the untried.
then, the second thoughts. the alibis offering themselves.
then it dawned on me that this was a recurring theme in my life.
then, for some reason, i connected this to an earlier epiphany when, basking on a deserted beach in LA near the strand, a huge airliner from LAX flew overhead and its shadow swept over me like some massive wave of muons from a distant supernova.
then, i tried to turn the poem into a very long life story.
then i realized i had no time for that shit.
then i woke up and found myself on a plane, with the flight attendant asking me "coffee or tea?"
then i looked down and saw a beautiful island, and a tiny sailboat tracing a frozen white arc of foam, like a sea-borne comet.
then i hacked the poem down into its barest essentials.
then i decided i liked airline food.
then i arrived. in more ways than one. ;-)

(psst. i hope the infernal baby is fine and healthy, and letting you get enough sleep.)

  • moonriver said on Feb 22, 2009....
    hi lucy.
thanks for your nice comments, my friend. como siempre.
(psst. what exactly did you like? the poem? or the feeling of a frisky man ogling you down or staring you down as the case may be, with the tropical sea rising up in his blood?)

    hi silver.
    thank you.
i'm glad this poem got your eye.
you have to be wary about reading my other poems, though, because they tend to lurk in shadows and then bite a pretty girl's neck at the most inopportune moment. some of my poems are so... carnivorous. lol.

    hi again, ate papel.
the quote from mark twain made me smile, because it's so very true.
so what do we do? we hoard our poems because we think they're not ready for public consumption yet.
i'm like that myself, most of the time.
but my friend, you can't decide NOT to be a literary writer, because you are.
and it's out of your hands now.
the jury has made a decision. :-)

  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2009....
you never cease to amaze me moon.  that was beautiful, and yes, the water is so blue and clear.  I love the ocean and all its secrets it holds from the smooth smooth rocks beaten by the waves in the pacific n.w. to the white white sands of the of the south.  :)
  • beyondtheveil said on Feb 22, 2009....
Poetry means different things to different people I have found. This struck me as, being so full of color, losing one part of a life and finding it again and seeing that color once more. The reason I say that is when I return to a lost part of life and stand and view it, the thing I see, feel, and remember most is it's color, both through the eyes and inside.

A wonderful trip for me. Thanks.

    hi quietone.
yes, the blueness of the water was almost neon-like in its intensity.
the island chain is inhabited by indigenous peoples, and commercial tourism has barely touched the area.
oh, i know very well your love of the water, my friend.
your nature pics, your paintings... remember that precious 2007 pic of a bahamas lighthouse? ;-)

    hi beyond.
    you hit the bull's eye.
it IS a mostly color-dominated poem.
during the long hours that i mentally shaped the poem, my mind's eye saw vivid swirls of sea and sky colors.
tiny silver specks of jet planes and seagulls, sailboats and dolphin pods, almost lost in the vast immensity of blue sea and sky.
you make a fascinating insight about the emotional weight of colors in the sense of loss and rediscovery.
you are most kind in your comments, my friend.

    holly darling.
i'm glad this post triggered your own poetic explosions.
may you continue to shudder from sweet lingering climaxes... ;-p
can i meet you for breakfast at tiffany's? lol

  • moonriver said on Feb 23, 2009....
    hi secret.
i think you have something there.
the sea -- the swirl of colors and sound, the cool and brisk wind, the salty water, the smell of marine life, the entire ambience of the shoreline -- has these subtle soothing and healing qualities.
i think this is because humanity has semi-aquatic roots, long lost in the mists of time.
    but our subconscious remembers.
after all, it is said that the human body is mostly analogous to seawater bottled inside a complex organic sponge of flesh and bone.
your sister loves the sea, i'm sure.
    thank you for everything, friend.

    hi andora.
if the beaches of hawaii can trigger your own internal poetic explosions, then maybe your place should be in my next itinerary... ;-)

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2009....
phoeby, it's understandable because the eyes are frozen in that split-second click of the camera.
eyes are best read in real-time, in the real world... :-)

psst. let me tell you a secret.
    normally, i wear eyeglasses.
but since i broke my only pair recently, i forced myself to adjust to an active life without glasses.
even now that i've had them repaired, i've come to like the feeling of wearing none.
    especially when i swim.
now if you've ever worn eyeglasses then suddenly you don't, you tend to force your eyes to focus by... yup, squinting.

    so there.
a simple innocent squint against the glare of the neon-blue water and white sand is what i was doing in that picture.
although, yes, the pic shows me as if i was giving every lady a menacing look and saying, "you try and dare come close to me, and i'll devour you."
    lol.

glad to pass along the whalesong tortoise mood. i was inspired by your lovely poem...appreciate hearing romantic talk from men!

the other day i was swimming at my favorite beach and dove into a wave...opened my eyes as soon as i immersed to see a sea turtle below me frolicking in the wave. I think I surprised it, and it popped its head above the water, after i surfaced, to look at me. I was all smiles and felt the turtle relax, as it chose to stay close.

We banned the hunting of turtles in Hawaii in the 60's and now, they are all over the place. When I walk to the shore at sunrise I see their heads popping out of the water all up and down the shore line. truly their heads are surrounded with pink and purple water, making the turtles look purple too. one does not need lsd to see the beautiful colors here. winkie winkie.

ahhhhh, that explains it. no i've not worn glasses or contacts or anything yet so not sure what they feel like. i can imagine it must be like how you described though, definitely.

everytime i look at that ocean i want to dive into it.

god, it's my birthday tomorrow arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i should be able to dive into it if i wish me thinks. i'll magically imagine it somehow. reminds me of the whitsunday islands up north here. so so so aqua.

    hi phoeby.
    it's your birthday tomorrow?
then here's my birthday gift for you: another pic from the same photoset.
the first pic i posted was taken in an open beach.
this one was taken in a nearby hidden lagoon -- your classic blue lagoon.

    blue-lagoon-1

no color enhancement done c/o photoshop... just natural blue shades of sea water.
i took the photo some moments before we dived from the boat's outriggers.
notice that the coral formations at the bottom can still be seen.
    that's about 10, 15 meters deep already.
and yet the water is still so translucently clear.

so. what are you waiting for, birthday girl?
go wear your birthday suit, jump right in, and enjoy the warm waters... :-)

ohmygod!!! i wanna jump into the water!!!!!!!

  • moonriver said on Feb 25, 2009....
well, queenie, phoeby probably needs company in the water.
so what are you waiting for? go!
(psst. make sure you know how to swim... i've gone through a basic lifesaving course, but i'm no baywatch hunk...lol)

    hi ddame.
    i used neon blue.
i also liked allys' term, topaz blue.
    but it wasn't enough.
i was groping for the right term the other day, and while girl-watching in the lobby, with several zhang ziyi look-alikes attending to late arrivals, suddenly the right word came to mind:
    electric blue.

    hi phoeby.
    i see you're also electrified.
    happy birthday again.
((freshly-ironed killer shirt gets splashed, mumbles, changes into famous pink shirt))
you go celebrate in blue, my friend, while i go cerebrate in pink. lol.

God it looks lovely though.  Very calming yet with hidden excitement laying in wait underneath... hmmmm

((late coffee break, another peek at sc))
you mean the coast adjacent to the great barrier reef?
    excusez moi, madame.
i wasn't there, nobody saw me, and you can't prove anything in court.
    where's the hidden excitement, where?
quickly, tell me where! i wanna go there!

  • phoeby said on Feb 27, 2009....
yeah, would celebrate in that crystal bluey-clear water anytime. can i ask what amazing country has water like this??

    hi phoeby.
all i can say is, the shots were taken somewhere in east asia-pacific.
that could be anywhere from hainan to taiwan, the philippines to the marianas...
the whole stretch of indochina down to thailand and the malaya peninsula...
the whole of great island chains in se-asia, from borneo and sulawesi, to sumatra all the way to the south pacific.

australia has great bluewater too, as lucy will attest to, although i haven't been to her northern backyard, or backdoor ... ;-)
they do have excellent dive spots and coral reefs in south asia too huh, ddame?

  • phoeby said on Feb 27, 2009....
    well that's narrowing it down ;) !

well wherever it is, it's divine. yep, we have wundabar smimming holes around here. even close to the city i live in, there was one (not sure if it's still here bec of the drought)... many years ago. it was crystal clear. so so so nice. i swam for hours.

and the whitsundays are very beautiful too.
