I wrote a post once called 'Patterns of energy' that went into this somewhat. Since I like to think about it so much, I want to put into written words my thoughts for tonight. Simply put, we do not exist. Or put another way, we do not exist the way you think we do.

Our world of physics is a wonderful thing. Its why I miss truthsayer's 'cosmic cafe' posts so much. There was a lot of interchange on this subject. Science has spent a great deal of time with it's tools looking for the fundamental quality of matter and the answer may be closer than we expect.

Particle physics tears apart matter in the search for its basic building block. They break open the atom and find electrons, protons and neutrons. They break those open and find nothing more than particles with a lifespan so short as to be almost immeasurable. Break a particle open in a different way, find a different looking particle.

If you leave those particles completely alone, they revert to a 'wave form' which is massless. Its that way with all particles. Its a fascinating thing really. One example is scientists fire a photon (particle of light) from a photon gun at a barrier with two slits. The particle doesn't know which to go through, so it reverts to wave form, goes through both simultaneously and reverts back to particle form to be collected on a photographic plate.

What it comes down to is that anything is a particle only if it is 'interferred' with. If you look at it, it exists, if you don't, it doesn't.

Two of the greatest quantum physicists, Werner Heisenburg and Neils Bohr met in Copenhagen at one time to discuss what quantum theory was telling them. After a couple weeks of discussing this, the Copenhagen Interpretaion was formed. What it says basically is that there is no deep reality, or put another way, atoms are not 'things'.

The basic constituants of elementary particles are 'trapped light', or energy. Everything comes down to energy and energy contains no mass. Therefore, nothing in the universe is actual matter. What we see, and everything around us, is made from gravitationally trapped energy.

It is certainly difficult to accept the fact that all we see and touch is an illusion at the fundamental level. Us, the moon, the stars, all an illusion.

So what are we? We are pure energy. Everything is.

That energy contains an intelligence in a way we cannot fathom. The cosmos is an intelligent energy in motion.

Some call it God.

there was a time where i would enjoy a joint and ponder deep things...i don't do that anymore...however, this blog is begging for a big fattie. i just can't wrap my mind around this one beyond! thanks alot...i'll be up all night pondering it ;)

Yes, I do believe we are, everything is energy.. we are all "connected" through this energy flow.  How it happens is beyond me, I just accept it as "faith" and go on, knowing that we are all a part of ONE.  It brings to mind that movie called "Powder"... that explains it to me.
  • secretlife said on Feb 21, 2009....

this is so far over my head, i'm drowning.

i'm like fraggles.....maybe if i were high as a kite it would make more sense to me-  i like the idea as quiet said of all of us being part of ONE-

    it's a nice idea.

i don't particularly buy the idea that we're pure energy.  especially when we're in bodies...

i like to think one day we'll all understand.

    Your thoughts are fascinating, beyond.

I am still trying to grasp my own concept of how I see the universe.  Perhaps when my priorities have shifted, I could give it more thought.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

I say it so often I get tired of hearing it, but time is an elusion and when you think about the "Big Bang Theory" it really backs up with you are saying here.

A particle smaller than an atom, the only thing that exists before the universe. It explodes (to put it mildly) and becomes everything that makes up the universe today. WOW........wow WOW WOW.

After the initial explosion, there is nothing but pure light, for 4 billion years just pure bright light !

Gives a new meaning to "And let there be light" huh?............Great post Beyond

BeyBey......I agree with you ......at the end we are pure energy...differently distributed, agglomerated, connected and exposed......

Being an agnostic...that's my explanation for all the marvelous ever changing e-volutioniary reality that surrounds us...

    Yep....some calls it God......;-).

Parmenide, the Acient Greek philosopher, was teaching that we are only illusions.....that Panta Rei...everything changes because our reality is very possibly duplicated in thousands other endless realities that might not even flow in the same consequential time-length..
A constant flux of time and light and energy...

So while i am writing this comment there is another me already getting up my chair after having written this comment. And there is another me still reading your post before deciding to write the comment......and so on...and on and on..fascinating, isn'it?....
Parmenide said that these endless realities might even come to some connection at times...this might explain our deja vu, the non-explaining memories and weird feelings, or our dreams...the coincidences...

Wow... i need another coffee now.......or wait....did i already get up and had one?.....so confusing.....lol......

d6- There are many books out there that explain physics well to the layman mind (layman mathematical mind).

fraggles- I've only tried a joint twice and I couldn't lay my mind around anything at those times.

quiet- How it happens is beyond me too. What I've found is the more you think you understand, the more questions you have.

secret- Don't worry about it being over your head, its over the head of the scientists. They do insist we are energy, though, on the very basic level.

paper- I'd like to hear it when you have that concept. Its fun stuff.

infernal- I remember those diaper times. Not a very soothing time for deep thought, is it? A break is nice.

pickers- I've heard about being light so many times before. A pleasing thought.

mobil- Time is another thing that is interesting, and fleeting. One more of those elements of conjecture around us that does not exist.

secret- Time is definitely an illusion.

ginsoul- You hit on a hot one. There is a theory in physics called the Many Worlds Interpretation (for one) that says everything that could possibly happen, does happen, and happens simultaneously. What you speak of is something I can't yet bend my mind around. Along with so many others. I just can't imagine an infinite number of universes for every event. I do like the idea of a gingersoul in every one. Hey, you and I may be on a Harley in one.
  • gingersoul said on Feb 21, 2009....
BeyBey.....in whichever universe you might be i hope to be too, my friend...:-)

Riding a Harley would be just the cherry on top....

Hey, watch that car....dang, you hit it.....wait.... we hopped in that parallel universe on our right just one second before the crash and you swirled around it....lol.....

    Wouldn't be fun?

Ooh is it strange I was thinking something similiar while I was trying to take a nap a little bit ago?  I was thinking of e=mc^2 and how does mass figure into energy.  So I went into it's basic units, deciding it would be in joules and the units of joules, which I believe use Newtons, which uses kilograms, if I remember right, and how you can also use f=ma and say m=f/a soo technically I can see how we are just energy, since mass is a force over acceleration and you can put that back into e=mc^2.  Have you heard of string theory?  I've always wondered how that might correspond to music, and also what you were saying about photons and how they go into wave lengths, maybe that could be associated with sound wavelengths, hence music.  Sorry I'm rambling!  It does seem like this is a good arguement for life to me, but it's so amazing to me that it somehow proves theres something big and wonderful out there, such as a God of some sort.  Also it can sure put things into perspective, how those silly things that can upset you don't really mean much.  Anyway, I like your post :)

Very cool post. Hindu philosophy touches on this little truth that all this is is an illusion. It is an illusion because we humans, with our very limited view of the universe can't see Bramha - or what's "really real," in it's totality.

We - and the universe - are made up of so much empty space - just pure energy holds us together.

    Mind blowing.

    Thanks for this post!

I'm a bit of a science nerd myself and I'm always struck by the way our scientific understanding move closer and closer to the same views that have been in eastern religions/philosophies for a very long time. Alan Watts is a great introduction to these views and if some of his lectures sound almost identical to this post.

sure is nice to see i am not alone. Quietone put it pretty good. i read about the power of thought/energy. quantum physics thingy.... i forgot the man who tested the theory about how our minds send it's energy to things....making them how we see them. huh anyway he took one room with several students and placed this glass of water in front of them. they were to talk, think only postive things like ....oh i love you ..... then in another room he set up the glass and these students had to talk nasty to the glass of water. .....anyway, in time, the glass of water that was talked to nicely was clear and fresh but the glass of water that was talked to badly....... turned cloudy and yuk. so the test was ....yup, we are all energy and we can make or break ....everything!  lordy that was a mouthful! lol. i believe! *smile*
  • beyondtheveil said on Feb 22, 2009....
Hey ginsoul, that was beautiful, and exciting. I especially liked the passing sequences. I'd love to take that ride.

ninja- I've read about string theory, tiny strings or points, of infinite gravity. I can't quite grasp what they are saying, though.

curmudgeon- That 'empty space' is a fascinating part of particle physics. I recently read that if you could collect all the 'matter' composing all of humanity, it would fit into one sugar cube. Unbelievable, huh?
  • beyondtheveil said on Feb 22, 2009....
reckoner- I have talked to numerous people about Eastern religions (or philosophies) and no one has been able to explain to me exactly what they mean by illusions. If they mean 'things aren't what we think they are', its what I'm saying. I need to read more on this. I listened to the lecture Jesus and His Religion. There's a lot in there, I need to listen to it again.

memy- I've seen many of those paranormal studies with different groups and naturally skeptics tear them apart. Many more in depth studies need to be done on this. I do find them fascinating.
  • gingersoul said on Feb 22, 2009....
BeyBey.......any time....as long as we will happen to be in Italy at the same time and  in the same Universe......lol.......
  • reckoner said on Feb 22, 2009....
    @beyond
that podcast is weird because they take down older episodes so you can't get them. I think they get back around to them eventually.

"If they mean 'things aren't what we think they are', its what I'm saying."

    That's really general right? :)
There are few ways in which eastern religions clearly differ from western thought. They believe that the idea of a self is an illusion to a large degree. I tend to think we are both individuals and part of a unity. I don't see them as mutually exclusive. Eastern views also focus a lot on dualities. Thinks like good and bad only make sense relative to one another. That there is no such thing as good vs evil because they are different sides of the same coins.

Anyway, Watt's lectures are great. He has a lot of great books too. He has one book on taoism that isn't so good because he died before he finished it bit it was  published anyway.
  • beyondtheveil said on Feb 22, 2009....
reckoner- When you said 'that's really general' referring to 'things aren't what we think they are', it has to be that way at least to me. Realizing and truly believing it along with accepting a non-matter universe are two big steps, really. I run into almost no one who has any idea what I'm talking about.

And although I've believed this for over thirty years now, I haven't been able to take the next step and narrow it any more. There hasn't been anything for me to stand on for that next step. I'm getting the feeling the next step is composed of faith and there I'll probably fail.
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2009....

BeyBey.....i thought you might enjoy this video.....if you like, there are more on the same topic...
The sound is really bad...but  better than nothing...:-)

I am looking to a lot of video on this subject ..

What it boils down to is....we are creating our reality as we think of it....the universe is changed by he act of consciousness, an act that never ends...

So the universe itself will never end?...

    .
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 01, 2009....
ginsoul- I wish the makers of so many videos (and documentaries) would realize that sometimes the words are more important than music (or noise).

Anyway, interesting video combining consciousness, information, and holography. There were several good points, first being the universe is consciousness which I like a lot. Our universe as a conscious or intelligent universe (being the same thing) is something I feel has to be.

The universe expressing itself through holography is a beautiful theory. I'm most familiar with this through the work of the great physicist David Bohm, I have a book explaining his theory. In the video, I also liked the point they brought up concerning the deeper we look into an atom looking for the smallest building block is actually not going into the smallest, but building something larger the longer they look. I believe that is getting to the heart of a holographic universe.

Great video, thanks...oh, and sure, I'll take more if you have some in your pocket.

  • Voltaire said on Mar 10, 2009....
Good Beyond, very good. That is exactly along those lines I thought.

Now if all is energy, then maybe "paranormal things" aren't so strange after all?

Look for example at telekinesis, we know we need energy to move matter.
We also know energy can affect energy if we are "pure" energy then it might not be so impossible after all?
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 10, 2009....
kruu- I wrote that site down, visited once, and will be back.

ginsoul- I answered your and kruu's last comment days ago and it didn't take. Anytime you find more and want to post, I'll watch. That's a promise.

voltaire- Although nothing has happened to me in the paranormal I have in no way put it aside. To put it simply, there's too much good unexplainable stuff. I'm especially impressed by children. An example : A few months ago my wife told me a story related by one of her managers.

I believe it was her manager's sister received a call about their father rushing to the hospital. She quickly got someone to watch her (about six) year old daughter. Neither of the two knew anything had happened. At the hospital the father died. She went home and found her daughter sitting in the dark in the kitchen. The daughter never did that, she was afraid of the dark.

She went into the kitchen and her daughter looked at her and said "grandpa's ok.' She asked her daughter what she meant and she said 'He was just here and told me.'

How do you explain things like that? I've read a lot about children's NDE's also.
  • Voltaire said on Mar 11, 2009....
    Beyond,
I am not sure if anything paranormal has happend to me, as it might as well be a trick of the mind.

As for this grandpa, if you consider we are made of energy; energy can move through objects we consider "solid" and it can move unhinered anywhere.
If you take this into consideration it isn't so strange is it?

A normal numer is that 1% of all paranormal reports are unexplainable, the others are mostly a trick of the mind.

Some stuff that happens is surely worth to take into consideration.

    Regards,
    Voltaire
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 11, 2009....
voltaire- One per cent is probably about right. I'd say the same for UFO's too, about 1 in a hundred get strange. If you think about it, 1% is still a healthy number for both of all reports.

    Do you live in Canada?
  • Voltaire said on Mar 12, 2009....
Yes I think 1% is a suitable number.

    No, not Canada.
