I recently read a story about people that are good looking acheive more in life. Not because of how smart they are or because of their great work performance but because of how beautiful or handsome they are.

It states that people who are well groomed, attractive, thin and in shape receive higher paying jobs and make more money. This means that if an average-looking person earned $50,000 per annum, their better-looking co-workers would make $52,500 per annum, while their least attractive colleagues brought home just over $45,800 per annum.

The research also concluded that more attractive workers get more promotions than plain-looking ones.It has been observed that appearance can affect your confidence and communication, hence your productivity. This could be a reason why some employers choose to promote the more striking employees over the plain ones.

I think that it's an unfair practice , but it is reality.

considering how important looks are in this society-- and how obsessed we are with youth, can you possibly be surprised by this?

don't forget tall.  Statistically speaking, taller men make more money than shorter men.

Hmm. Perhaps we should call it the "eye-candy" benefit. After all, it helps improve the general environment - right? Besides, when looks fade and it's no longer easy to extract "extras" just by showing up, character can broaden, and that once-hot executive secretary can evolve into the skinny, overly-made up kooky cat lady comfortably...and the guys can become the toupeed girdle-strapped false-toothed girl ooglers that we all love so well.

See? What they gain today in money, they pay for tomorrow in dementia. Ah, well...

It stinks, but its true.  Plus, the better you look, its likely you've got a hell of a lot more confidence.  Although I will say that is not the case in all instances, and it does not mean that any 'average' looking person doesn't have self confidence.  Plus, you have to look at the people doing the promoting ... what are their motives?  Are they one of the 'pretty people' as well?  Birds of a feather flock together sometimes you know.  Maybe they're one of the average people and would like to get some favors from a 'pretty person'.  Maybe those 'pretty people' actually earn it.  I know not all of them do though.  Its annoying and defeating to realize just how much a person's skills and status can be based on their looks.  Appearance makes sense to me ... as you don't want to go to a business conference wearing your shittiest looking clothes (unprofessional, lack of effort, lack of compassion for the job, etc.).  However, sometimes OVER dressing can hurt too.  Makes you look like you try too hard ... a tight ass who might not be able to let go of things ... still an inappropriate planner.  It's a shame, but you're right, it's the reality of it all.

I agree, that completly sucks, if one is ugly.  : P

However, there is an underlying issue on this.  Would it be fair to say that good looking people are naturally more confident and self assured?  I think so.  Being confident and sure of yourself are big ticket qualities when it comes to achieving things.  So good looking and confidence go hand in hand.  Most promotions deal a lot with giving the employee more responsibility, more decision making power.  The more sure you are of your capabilities and the more confidnece we have in our selves would indicate being better prepared to take on the responsibility of a promotion.  Where as the less confident, unsure, low self esteem person would be trailing behind.  These personality types can belong to anyone of any sort of look.  But if we were to be generalizing i would say statistically, good looking people have more of these personality traits.  So i think it might be less shallow than we think.  Of course their are exceptions to everything but statistics are built to generalize...

Well I think that good looking people KNOW that they are good looking and that gives them confidence. They don't achieve more because of their looks they achieve more because of their confidence. There is nothing to say that a fat and or ugly person with confidence can not achieve as much as their better looking co workers.I think confidence, determination and believing in your self is everything.
