Fragment from GOP Fighting For Money From Stimulus They Opposed at the HuffPost

House Republicans, as a group, may take great pride in the goose egg they offered President Obama's stimulus package. But now the unanimous opposition is struggling to bring that money home.

Republicans will be working hard to make sure the money they opposed ends up benefiting their home districts, highlighting the political tightrope they walk in this economic crisis. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is watching House Republicans -- and reading local media -- closely and is only too happy to highlight any happy talk about a stimulus Republicans voted against.

Back in his home district, Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) found some nice things to say about the plan.

Republicans react to Obama’s housing plan by mouthing the mortgage banking industry’s talking points.»

Yesterday, President Barack Obama unveiled his plan to deal with the housing crisis. One part of the plan in particular — a provision allowing bankruptcy judges to “cram-down” mortgage payments for troubled homeowners — has drawn the ire of conservatives. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) said it is “going to affect future mortgages, because that’s going to put an additional risk premium on all mortgages,” while Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) claimed “this is going to raise rates for everyone else because banks have to cover the risk.” Watch it:

As The Wonk Room noted, conservatives are getting their arguments straight from banking industry talking points. BusinessWeek reported that the Mortgage Bankers Association “is distributing talking points to key congressional aides…[with] the argument that if lenders can’t be confident that loan terms will survive, they will raise rates.”

Rep. Cao Faces Potential Recall Petition For Toeing GOP Line And Voting Against The Stimulus»

Earlier this month, New Orleans’s new congressman Joseph Cao (R) stated that he would vote for the economic recovery package. “I believe that more likely than not, I will vote for it because the 2nd Congressional District needs a stimulus package,” he said. Even on the day of the vote, Cao was telling reporters that he was “leaning yes.”

In the end, however, Cao succumbed to GOP arm-twisting and voted against the package. The Republican party’s chief deputy whip stood near the freshman lawmaker during the entire vote, and Cao admitted that the leaders had applied some “pressure” on him to vote no, so that they could boast 100 percent opposition from their party.

BayouBuzz.com reports that many of Cao’s constituents are now angry and may launch a recall petition:

Congressman Joseph “Anh”Cao, a Republican, who defeated William “Bill” Jefferson is facing a recall petition because of his vote on the Barack Obama stimulus package. The recall has been initiated by a group of ministers. […]

One elected official, State Representative Juan A. LaFonta, Democrat of District 96 told Bayoubuzz that he does not know about the existence of the petition but that he would sign it. … “People are starving and Cao needs to represent the people of the district”, LaFonta said.

Then And Now: Canadians Welcomed Bush With Violent Protests, Raise American Flags For Obama»

Today, President Obama arrived in Canada, his first foreign trip since taking office. Already, the trip is a stark departure from the Bush years. U.S. presidents have traditionally made their first trip abroad to Canada. President Bush, however, broke with tradition and headed south to Mexico.

Already, there’s been a noticeable difference in the way the Canadian public has received the two presidents. Bush was wildly unpopular in Canada. Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who supported the Iraq war (and later admitted it was a mistake), was lambasted by Canadians as supporting “Harper-Bush” policies. Not surprisingly, Bush’s visits to Canada spurred massive protests:

“Thousands of protesters marched on Parliament Tuesday, rallying against President Bush’s visit and the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Twelve people were arrested after scuffling with police on the fringes of the peaceful demonstration.”

    – “But with thousands of protesters expected to demonstrate against Mr. Bush, the White House decided to cut short his visit to Ottawa and travel to Halifax instead.”

In light of all of the Republican posturing about the evils of federal spending, why isn't the data on federal spending vs. federal taxes paid getting more play?  The statistics put out by the tax foundation paint a pretty damning picture of who's really sucking at the federal teat. Hint - it's not those evil CA or NY elitist liberals.  The top half of the list is deep red.
