the mrs and i spent much of last week at my parents' place. my mother called tuesday evening last week: my father was on a golf excursion and would be gone until saturday, but she's been caring for my grandmother all by herself, and that's tiring. longtime readers may recall that my grandmother's had some health issues in the past, and she's been mostly bedridden for a little while now. concerned about her ability to manage that, we visited for a few days.

all of that however is a lead-up to the fact that we recorded several days worth of TV shows--i'm surprised at how much i actually watch these days--and only recently started getting through them. that's why it's taken so long for me to watch dollhouse, about which i blogged previously.

it airs on fox, on friday nights. i really wanted to like it, but am hoping that the pilot isn't representative of the rest of the series--for however long fox actually shows it. there's some great stuff in it, but the whole i found somewhat unsatisfying. honestly, if i hadn't known that joss whedon was involved in the project, i wouldn't ever have guessed it from watching the pilot.

but of course, that gave me the idea for--

[wait for it!]

--a poll!

so what TV shows are you guys watching these days?

I used to watch a fair number of TV shows regularly (House, Bones, Star Trek reruns, Sarah Connor)  but I've drifted off.  For one thing it seemed like almost every show out there was so serious and dark!  It was getting hard to want to sit down and watch when I knew it was going to be troubling - real life is dark enough these days!

Plus, maybe the biggest factor, so many of the good shows out there now are so complex that if you miss just a couple of episodes you can't get into them.  I've missed out on a lot of great shows I was really interested in watching, but couldn't keep up with every week.  I like overarching storylines but I really miss the old-fashioned episodic style, where it didn't matter if you missed a few episodes or didn't have a DVR, you could still watch without feeling left out.  I hate feeling like my schedule is dictated by the TV, so the more I feel forced into watching every episode the more I lose interest.

Plus I am playing a lot of Warcraft which means a lot of times I'm at the computer in a raid or dungeon with other people so I'm only half paying attention to the TV.

So mostly these days I leave it on the Discovery Channel, Comedy Central, or PBS.  The TV is almost always on, I just don't follow any shows regularly.  I love Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Worst Handyman/Worst Driver.  Forensic Factor.  The Simpsons.  Stand-up comedy and Just for Laughs: Gags.  One show I'm actually watching more than I thought I would is Knight Rider...I know people weren't exactly thrilled about it when it was announced, but it comes on in a time slot when there's nothing else I'm interested in, and it's really growing on me!  I enjoy Fringe too, but I never seem to catch it.

I'm not watching a lot of TV these days and mostly it's hit or miss if I watch them regularly.  I like Bones, Leverage, NCIS, Saving Grace, The Closer and sometimes the Law and Order series.

Hey Ed, it's been a while. I watched Dollhouse on Friday and I'm not real sure about it either, I'll have to watch a few more episodes.

The hubby and I are really into Heroes, Lost and Survivor. We watch American Idol, but I'm really sure why. Bill also watches Hell's Kitchen and Fringe.

I try not to get hooked on to many TV shows at once, I don't know what I'll do when Lost is over.

I am a self professed tv junkie, but I really haven't been that interested in very many shows lately. I don't know if it's just me or if the shows just aren't as good. I taped Dollhouse but haven't watched it yet. The premise sounded boring and confusing, even if I am a huge JW fan. I don't have high hopes for it if you didn't like it, and I'm not confident Fox will keep it on anyway.

As for what I do watch, lately: Heroes, Supernatural, Medium, Survivor, Ghosthunters, How I Met Your Mother, and various reality type shows and specials on VH-1. I'm sadly and strangely fascinated with Rock of Love....

I hardly watch any TV.  When I do, it's when I'm at my friend's house or something like that.

When I do watch something at the house, it's usually online (hate commercials).

I'm a big fan of cartoons.  Anything animated, I'll watch, pretty much.

I haven't seen Dollhouse yet.  I'm waiting for a few more episodes of it and probably watch all of them in one sitting, you know?  Like a marathon or something.

Though I like that show "Man Vs. Wild" on Discovery.  That poor guy's eaten all kinds of nasty stuff on camera.  :D
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 17, 2009....
nyt: you know, i find that i'm watching more TV than i used to but you may be right re: the complexity of a show and the impact of missing one episode!. but also, i think some networks are running some episodes from their sites. hm...some of those shows are unfamiliar to me. i'm chalking that up to their perhaps being canadian shows rather than US shows.

u-i: i too watch leverage and really enjoy it! if you can find it, try watching the british show heist. it's very, very clever.

biglove: hey there, long time no see! yeah, jury's out on dollhouse for me still. i too watch heroes and i'm curious to see how this story arc with that kid is gonna pan out.

quietone: hey there! yeah, i've been known to do that more than a little myself. :D

CW: ah, i'd somehow forgotten about that! i can't say as i watch any of those shows, unfortunately.

fraggles: [blink] no converter box?! uh-oh! hey, i watch how i met your mother, too! :>

kyle: heh...as you know, i too watch how i met your mother as well as heroes, and of course i share your dread re: dollhouse and the idiots at fox. :> and it's good to see you too, dude. :>

beyond: good to see you again, sir! doing OK, thanks, all things considered. the mrs watches CSI & CSI: NY. i thought saving grace sounded interesting: what's it about again?

paper: nice to see you again! :>

grape: i'd suggest definitely waiting to watch the pilot & ep 2 together at least. i'm hoping that it feels more like joss, you know?

King Richard and I are news junkies - we compare the network, cable, national and international newspaper headlines with varied internet news sources so we can read between the lines and glean some real time truth.

We are Discovery and Comedy Central regulars wishing we had National Geographic at times

Mostly, we rent unlimited movies with no late date at blockbuster for just $25 per month

NOTE: we are old enough to remember the pre-tv era

while we were watching our  movies and tv shows descended into the dark abyss of torture scenes and bodies getting hacked and mutilated. I find myself covering my ears and eyes as soon as a movie begins. We have a three eye-covering event limit before we turn the trash off. This is happening with increasing frequency and I am glad as hell I did not have to shield my kids from this extreme rot! Even  so, they are jaded as hell when it comes to blood and guts!

Freedom of Speech has given us an eyeball full of the Human Condition and it ain't pretty

thanks for the thread ed, one can learn so much about folk by learning what they are interested in viewing

Hi Ed, it's so nice to see you back :) Lets see, the shows I watch now a days are Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, The Office, My Name is Earl, Lost, Desperate Housewives sometimes, also sometimes Hells Kitchen and the Amazing Race and I just started watching Scrubs and really like it. Ah but my all time favorite is Boston Legal, but I know it's cancelled now. I think it's funny I like an old peoples show though. I do miss Discovery Channel and Comedy Central, but I guess I have enough to watch as it is.
  • wombat said on Feb 17, 2009....

I usually end up flipping up and down the scale until something strikes me---alot of the time it's The Discovery Channel or History Channel--or some documentary like "I Shouldn't Have Survived."

Other than that, it's usually old reruns like Frasier or Friends.  And here's a little tidbit about my sleeping habits.  I leave the tv on and if I am awake at 3:00 a.m., I watch To Tell The Truth and I've Got A Secret."  I'm fascinated with the old days, and seeing people like Andy Griffith way back then, who was on the other night on a show taped before his Andy of Mayberry days!  He was promoting a broadway show he was in.

And, ok-----I just may be in and out tonight watching American Idol......And I liked Project Runway when it was on, and hope it comes back for another round!

  • cntlvmenuf said on Feb 17, 2009....
I watch "Access Holllywood" almost everyday because it happens to be whats on when I get home from work after the local news. Now I'm into "American Idol" it is not even that good but I am usually doing homework and use it as background noise coz thats all it really is. I like House & Bones but I never get to see the shows anymore. Also watch the new season of 24...bits and pieces. I usually close the day watching Jay Leno monologues.

pickers: see, i love cooking shows too, but i only ever seem to watch the ones on food network. i miss the shield too--but man, was that a lame finale!

tobi-lee: yeah, i didn't even think of how tough that would be for you! the original iron chef is teh shiz and morimoto's food is amazing! sadly, nobody airs the original iron chef in the US anymore, at least not in my area and it honks me off!

psych-ed: ah, a reality show fan. i gotta say, they just aren't my thing but hey, the more the merrier, they say, right? :>

starchini: hey, i liked important things too, i thought it was hysterical! catch the pilot when you can. me, i thought it was meh b/c while the ideas are interesting, the story itself just didn't really capture my interest that much. however, i don't know what anyone else thought of it: that's just my opinion.

diabolic: "gotta get back to my tv"--bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! damn, that's a lot of TV, you aren't kidding! but i do the same when it comes to an old show that i really liked, like mad about you... :>

[hands diabolic a 12 step program book]

GS: ah right, i knew that there was that contention with your daughter. :> i can't believe how different bourdain actually looks now that he's quit smoking! my wife is watching lie to me too, but it just isn't really my thing. and am i weird for not really having liked six feet under?

andora: you know, there's sadly enough bad stuff on TV for every bad taste. sad, but true, i can't help thinking. :>

np! wait, how come you're missing cable? did i miss something?

wombat: see, i do the same thing, zooming around through the channels like that. :D

cntlvmenuf: ah, you're a background TV-type--my wife is the same way, actually. :>

silver phoenix: wow, it's been a long time! and yeah, i'd say that puts you in good company indeed!

HH: doing OK, all things considered, thanks. i gave up on sarah connor chronicles, too.

and now to answer my own question: i watch how i met your mother, chuck, dollhouse, leverage, iron chef, clone wars (i just can't quite star wars...), dirty jobs and hustle.

TV for me is more a tool than entertainment.  I use it to watch as many news programs as possible from as many differents sources as possible. Since they often use the same source that can be difficult but I try my best.  I also watch many current affairs shows dealing with the news in some greater detail.

Next I like documentaries on almost any topic.  This satisfies my curious nature and I enjoy hearing about or learning new things or more about things that interest me. My education continues the easy way...

Then I like a good laugh and there are not too many really good shows to choose from but I do like the Simpsons, Seinfeld, Two-and-a-half men and anything with a good bite to it.  There are a number of good aussies shows as well.

During the slow hours there is DrPhil, Oprah which I enjoy because it amazed me that so many people come on the air to a global audience and make fools of themselves.  Great stuff!!!  It is also fascinating to see Oprah tell the middle class how to live their lives in every detail.  Scary!!!  But very interesting.

I like Gorden Ramsie in small doses.  I like Star Trek but I'm not a Trekky.  I like sci-fi.  I only occasionally watch all those standard one hour  drama shows like SCHB... and FTW... or BGT... LACOPS... FBILUV...  (can't remember any of them but you know.... all those shows with the letters.....)

    That's about it.

We don't get to watch too many shows together because I get home about an hour and a half before my husband has to go to bed so we record the shows we like and watch them on my nights off.  We watch Chuck, Heroes, Life on Mars, DEA, Bones, Burn Notice, Psych, Monk, NCIS, Scrubs, Eli Stone, Masterpiece Classics, and Homeland Security (because one of my kids is with INS).  We like reruns of WKRP in Cincinnati.  My husband watches Lost while I'm working because it annoys me.  I liked the first 2 seasons of it but then it just got too weird.

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about The Shield Finale.
Let's say it ranks right up there with The Sopranos.
Oh, I know everyone......well the artsy fartsy people think it was pure genius.

Yeah, I can see Vic stifled by his job.
Will he or won't he shoot himself in the head?  I don't know!  And I don't want to puzzle over it for the rest of my life!
I could halfway buy Shane killing his family and commiting suicide, but you know, I think the writers just went too deep into the waters of shock and awe, and couldn't write themselves out......the same thing happened with Six Feet Under (although I did enjoy the last five minutes) blah, blah, blah....boring!

Hey Ed, I know it's been a while. Along with what BigLove has already listed, I enjoy watching Mythbusters, Deconstructed, Wreckreation Nation, etc. Pretty much anything on the Discovery or Science Channels. But I also love watching anything in HD.

    hi ed--
i'm not watching much tv these days, except the early evening news and an occasional documentary.
there's a lot of good-quality stuff out there, i know.
it's just that much of my entertainment now comes from cd and dvd because they are more convenient for me.

    hi ed.
it's great to be reading you again, even if just occasionally (like me haha).
all's well that starts well, becomes unwell, then ends well. in three acts.
now i see you're no longer in default italics.
let me see how this comment displays...

  • silverwhisper said on Feb 27, 2009....
i added a close italics tag in my last post, i hope that's addressed it.

it's great to to be reading you again too, sir. :>

Sadly, I haven't had much time for TV.  And while I did watch the first two seasons of "Heroes," I quit after I realized that the writers weren't focusing on the continuity or the characters anymore.

It's a good thing those writers got fired.  Although I pity whomever takes over the job, 'cuz they've got a shitload of retconning to do...

I've been watching a hell of a lot of movies, though--I'll try to review some of them once I gather up my notes.
