Right now Australia is being gripped by two natural disasters. This morning I woke up and checked the news for the Victorian fires.

How terribly sad, 108 so far have lost their lives.  We have never had a fire, bushfire that has been that bad.  Many years ago we had the "Ash Wednesday" fires where 48 people lost their lives.  This is far worse, far more dangerous.

In the north flood waters are still rising, the rain that has been dumped is the biggest rainfall experienced for some years.  People's homes are distroyed but thankfully no loss of life as yet.  There is a serious shortage of food north of Townsville, nothing in the supermarkets up here where we live, if you don't think I'm telling the truth try to imagine going to your supermarket for some basics like an onion or potato, a carrot and find yourself in a large empty space with black boxes staring back at you.  Shelves are diminishing, tinned vege is now like gold, there is corn, there are olives, there are beans thank god but not much left of those.

It doesn't look like we will have any deliveries of food for at least five days, what we do until then is anyones guess.

We live in a country of extremes yet these two disasters have caught people out.  Many of those who have lost their lives in the fires lost them whilst trying to drive out of fire storms so strong, so hot there is little but ashes left.

Also it would seem that a young child has been taken by a croc in the Daintree (Rupert I heard how it happened now on our local radio station) he was walking his dog on a wooden platform with his older brother.  The crock took the child off the platform.... why are parents so lazy and overconfident with crocs on that river in summer is beyond me.  They have paid the ultimate price for not educating their sons to the dangers and now only one son is left.

No one in their right mind would allow a young child to wander close to the daintree river bank on his own without an adult whilst crocs are this active and rivers are this flooded.  It is a shame a damn shame his parents now will live with it for the rest of their natural lives.

In your warmth and cosy homes, sipping hot chocolate or drinking a wine, eating a large meal full of goodness, remember others that have nothing but the clothes on their backs, remember those who are unable to feed themselves, life is always going to throw these disasters at us, we never really expect them to hit us until they do.

    Oh, my gosh Lucy, I just do not know what to say.  How awful for your country to face both these disasters at the same time.  So much loss of life already.  Please stay safe my friend.  As far as food, what on earth are you going to do?  I will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts.

    Quet ~ It is so sad, really it is more sad than I could imagine, many towns, ENTIRE towns are gone, including the people in them.  babies charred remains with their parents in cars so burned out they cannot identify them...

    We will be fine, I am a horder so have plenty of tinned foods, fresh veg will have to wait but many on pensions etc do not have stock piles, so it will be sparse meals for them.

    Jo ~ What really makes me angry Jo is that a fire bug started a few of those fires, that fire bug took peoples lives.

    We'll be fine but it certainly brings home a few facts about not taking what we DO have for granted.
  • PAPERBACKWRITER said on Feb 08, 2009....

    I had to look it up in Google Australia...firebugs...my goodness...arsonist...how can they do this...I will read..more...I cannot fathom what goes on in the head of those capable to do such crime.. :(

    I am glad you have supplies, Tobi.

    And yes, I have always always been thankful for the life I have been given.  So much people have it worst...I can never give thanks enough.

     I'm also getting reports over here in the United States those fires were deliberately set. Some of the fires were extinguished by the fire department only to be found re- set later on. Regardless if this information is true or not, stay alert and be safe Lucltorial.
  • Lucytorial said on Feb 08, 2009....

    Cman ~ We are in no danger of bush fires, they're south we've got floods which is easier to deal with.

    Yes many were deliberately lit and if they find them they should be jailed for life no question.  Sick fucks.

    One fire CMan took a town of 600 people in half an hour, thats how fast these fires are, like in the US they turn into fire storms, so quick that no one would have a chance.

    I have a dear friend who lives in Victoria, and I was very concerned for his and his family's safety.  I was very relieved to hear that they've been spared so far.  I pray it stays that way.

    From the news reports I've heard, it sounds like hell, sheer hell, in the truest sense of the word.

    Take care of yourself, LucyT.  I'm keeping you in my thoughts.  {{{hugs}}}

    Why is the military not mobilizing and flying food in?  How fast did those fires spread?  I think it's awful that so many tragedies and hardships are falling so closely together Lu.  Someone needs to get the government off it's ass and make it do the job you pay taxes for.

  • Ms.Confused said on Feb 08, 2009....
    Excatly i agree with uniquely-ironic...but it seems if the goverment acted fast...this situtation could have been prevented...or atleast stopped in time before so many people lost thier lives...and you mentioned that your area is affected with floods, i hope you stays safe and stock up.

    oh Lucy. I've been reading about this. The world is a little crazy right now. All those poor people. And you Lucy Lu. How do you get through this food shortage? Do you stock your shelves knowing that this type of thing might happen? Do you have food to eat? I'm so very sorry and wish I could do something to help out. Telling you that I care is all I can offer.

    Lucy, I couldn't even imagine ... neither the natural disasters or the crock fatality.  It does sound like some pretty huge negligence on the parents' part though ... just unfathomable.  I hope though, that mother nature lets up on you guys soon so that things can start getting back to business as usual.  However, I know that that won't change the lives that have been lost.  Hopefully soon all will get back on track.  Take care.

    I just heard about this on the radio tonight. So sorry to hear it all. I pray
    you are OK and not in harms way. I also pray that you get supplies in
    your area very soon. It is winter here, but summer seems to bring more
    fires here these days as well. I think there have always been fires, but
    now there are so many people peppered across the land to be in the
    way of them, and every other thing like tornados and hurricanes.

    lucy, i've read the google news updates on both disasters just now.
    i have experienced what it's like to be cut off from supplies of basic commodities for a week or more, during monsoon rains and especially in the aftermath of super-typhoons.
    but i can only imagine what it must be like to be caught in a huge firestorm that engulfs entire towns...
    my thoughts are with all of you, sc friends and disaster victims down under.

  • Lucytorial said on Feb 09, 2009....

    Thanks everyone, look the floods are not so bad, we can live on minimum, I can live on rice or soup for months...... no problem.

    The fires have taken a huge toll, our community Australia is feeling its depth extremely so.  So many people come from down south and are fraught knowing that their loved ones may not have made it.

    These fires were deliberately lit, ALL of the homes burned are being treated as homicide scenes, no one is allowed back until they have searched the scene its disgusting, those who started these fires need to be given the harshest treatment of all, not death but constant and unhinibited ... I don't know its disgusting.

    Thanks everyone for your well wishes and oh Woman! we get cyclones (hurricanes every year, I stock up in November over the month just in case)

    Uni The armi are being sent into the fires, there are barges slowly making it as well as planes bringing in food etc but it will take weeks before things are normal and food stocks, etc are up to scratch.. there isn't much else they can do.

    Frankly we need better security plans for those who wish to live in the bush, we need stricter building codes (burn shelters) that are manditory, we need an alert system that doesn't put the wrong message out "Either leave now or stay and fight" I don't know any human being who is ready for that kind of challenge or disaster or struggle to live, its just very sad.  Sorry if I'm gloomy but its the Australian way, each brother and sister all connected in our desire to live in a special place right now we all each and every one of us feel the loss of life and home, the trauma is shared by all fo us and the same thoughts that we wished we didn't know.

    Sheltercrow:  That last video is not only dated but pretty far fetched.  PM Howard has been swept out of office - thankfully - and only he and Bush could fantasise about getting 11 million people off the damn island of Australia.  Where the hell would they go exactly.  In any case things in terms of water have improved and apart from the obvious hazards of living in bushland (not new) most of us are still alive.  Things will get worse in Australia, no doubt, but moving over half the population is not happening - I don't care what was discussed.  Remember, Howard RAN into Iraq on the heels of his hero, Bush.   They were peas in a pod.  A sick kind of symbiosis.   Like a leech and a haemophiliac.....

    I for one, refuse to leave.

    D6fer:  Muslims pyromaniacs.  WOW!!!   Ingenious.   Now that is what I call cost effective terror.   No evidence exists.

    Sheltercrow:   Firstly, thank you for correcting my spelling mistakes.  English is not my native tongue so at a time like this I really appreciate the help, as I'm sure the others do as well.   I really ought to try harder despite any emotional distractions due to the fun we are all having down under.  Please forgive me....

    I happen to live with an American (here in Sydney) and he informed me that the gentleman who presented that video you posted is nothing short of a complete nut.  Did you mean to introdce an element of levity into the situation?  If so then it was lost on me but I hope it amused you at least; but thanks for trying.

    Regardless of whatever some extremist in whatever Middle East may want other people to do on his behalf there is no evidence that anything of that nature has occurred.  Sadly we have pyromaniacs down under just like anywhere else.  Other than your post there have been NO CLAIMS by any terrorist group intended to instil fear into our wider community over these terifying fires.

    Let's hope your video and post don't escape into the general forum of the media where it might cause panic and distress which I am certain was not your intention.  We already undertand you only meant to give us all a moment of fun in the midst of all this death and destruction.   "ha ha ha...." ~ there you go....

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Death toll now stands at 181.    It is feared the number could reach 300+.
    Gee..... what we need is another whacky video to lift our spirits and take the edge off this experience.  How about it ShatterCrow?
    Its totally ludacrous to even state its muslims for crying out loud Australia of all places actually doesn't fall for that shit you americans do.  Suckers everywhere I swear to god thats funnier than the statement itself.
    Pieter have you guys got a repreive from the heat wave yet? my sister lives in Kurrajong and said they've had 45 degree days all week last week.
  • PieterOpie said on Feb 10, 2009....
    Would you believe I am sitting here shivering - it's now 20ÂșC.  Usually that's comfortable, but it feels cold.  Talk about extremes.
    It is better than the heat of course and it will lessen our own fire risk here.  We did have some fires earlier in the week but nothing at all like Victoria.
    I am relishing my shivers.    I hope this signals the end of the worst of the summer heat.  We don't need any more this year.
    BTW ~ are the floods receding yet?  What's the latest?
  • Lucytorial said on Feb 10, 2009....
    only just receding, we finally have a few trucks with food getting through townsville, but seriously its quite odd going to the supermarket and seeing it completely empty, I'm not kidding, you'll get bread and milk but anything else? nudda.
    Today its drying out a little, we'll have a couple of days of sunshine before the whole rain thing starts again unfortunately.
    20?? Woot? thats bullshit, thats why I left Sydney, too extreme... at least here even when it rains its a steady 28 to 30 year round.
I have looked at photos on the internet --just awful.
  • sheltercrow said on Feb 10, 2009....
    Whatever...
  • PieterOpie said on Feb 10, 2009....
    Wombat:  On behalf of those affected,  thank you.  Personally I am quite safe.  Arson on this scale is difficult to fathom, or anything that causes such massive suffering for no rational reason.  There have been cases in the past where the perpetrator was in fact a volunteer fireman who started fires and then partook in the fight to quell the fire.  He wanted to be admired as a hero.  Go figure.
    Often it is young kids, usually boys "playing with matches" as kids do, not realising the gravity of their actions.  You would think that any parent living in areas that prone to fire would take extra care to educate their kids about the consequences and the scale of the disaster that can eventuate.  You can't really lock up little kids for 25 years.  Education is a must.  Perhaps the state should take it on.  I don't know.
    There is now a plan to include a bunker type shelter to be built with all new homes where people can wait for the fire to sweep over them until it has passed.  They might lose everything but not their lives.  Now only those with dams of water (basically a large hole with water for live-stock) have managed to survive by sitting in the middle of them.  However the radiant heat is still a danger if it is very nearby.  I think I'd prefer to go way underground AND under water, wearing asbestos coveralls.
  • D6fer said on Feb 10, 2009....
    I am dead serious......some sick fucking terrorists are burning your country!
  • diabolicdame said on Feb 10, 2009....
    Hey its stillin the news here.. any signs of it easing up? And is all this talk about terrorists behind it real? I suppose I shouldnt believe newpapers completely.. or should I? I really hope no more die in this tragedy.. this is so bad! I cant believe someone would do this on purpose!!
  • PieterOpie said on Feb 10, 2009....
    The nonsense about terror-pyromaniacs is not in the paper.  D6fer found some mad thing on the internet and there is NO evidence.  They may however show up in the USA next summer.  After all, you are their prime target.  In any case since we have both dumped our fascist governments they might ease off with their crazy murderous behaviour.  They are giving their religion a bad name; a little like Bush did with christianity.
    Unfortunately the fires persist but the weather has cooled a little and that makes a big difference.  Sadly there are many more bodies undiscovered and the toll is now 181 and could go as high as 300+.
    It is a set of factors that have come together to make this the tragedy it has become.  Drought, record breaking heat, winds and panic.
    BTW.... arsons or not, this was inevitable.  Fires do start because of lightening all the time.  Arsonists speed up the process and create fire in widespread areas.  However it is inevitable that sooner or later fire will sweep through our bush.  In fact many of our trees need fire to germinate.  Their seed pods only split open after they have been burned.  Fire is part of our ecosystem.  It's just that people choose to live in wooded areas and that is obviously a risk.
    Fire management cannot always protect all areas.  In this case it would not have made any difference.
