I know several people who suffer from insomnia.  It really affects them in mood and energy.  My mom and my sister are the first two that come to mind.  I usually fall right to sleep.

It seems if I lay down, I'm out very quickly.  That's not to say that if I have something bothering me, that I won't be restless.  It's certainly not my norm.  I probably fall asleep within ten minutes after closing my eyes.

If something is weighing on my mind, I will usually have nightmares instead of insomnia.

How about you?  How quickly do you fall asleep?

If I'm tired, within 30 minutes, if not, I can be awake for over an hour

I'm an night owl by nature, so just getting to bed is a pain in the butt for me. then, when I'm in bed, I toss and turn. Sometimes for 2-3 hours. I may have a few things on my mind, or feel so wide awake I just can't sleep. If I realize I'm awake because I'm sore from a workout or something, I get up and take ibuprofen. Then, I fall asleep within 45 minutes. wow...i had a lot to say about my sleep (or lack thereof!) haha

I'm up out of bed, again, reading your blog at 2:22. What does that say??? It is a curse and it runs in my family. My brothers have the same issues. Sometimes I go right to sleep but about half the time it is a struggle to sleep and the difference it makes in how you feel the next day is tremendous. It is also an issue for blood sugar CW. Anyway. Glad you don't have this problem. Night.

well since i have of things on my mind lately i have trouble falling asleep so sometimes i watch tv... and better yet... i masturbate... ;-)
  • Twylarants said on Feb 07, 2009....
I can fall asleep so easily if I'm on the couch watching tv, but once I go to bed it's a different story.  If I fall asleep right away I wake up 2 hours later and can't fall back to sleep for hours.  Other times, it takes me 2 hours to fall asleep, then I stay asleep the rest of the night.  I don't know what the 2 hours have to do with anything but I've been doing that for years.
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 07, 2009....
    uniquely,
I do fall asleep quickly, but I stay up until I can't think straight.  lol  Do you have a set bedtime?

    silver phoenix,
When I was younger I had a hard time going to bed too.  I know what you mean.

    woman,
Both my parents and my sister have trouble sleeping all night.  I guess I'm lucky that way.  My thing is nightmares.  If I have one, I will have high blood sugar first thing of the morning.  I really hate that because you can't control it.

    queen,
I guess that is one way to relax.  :-)

    Twyla,
Your internal clock must like that setting.  I know if I go to bed too early, I will wake up ridiculously early of a morning and never go back to sleep.

Yes, I have set bedtimes, but like the immature brat that I am, I constantly ignore them if I'm having any sort of fun! LOL
  • nytquill17 said on Feb 07, 2009....
I've always been a night owl too; falling asleep is usually kind of hard for me.  I've learned a few techniques and things I use to quiet myself down and get to sleep faster.  But if something is truly bothering me, forget it.  When I'm depressed I'm actually scared to sleep because I'm scared of where my mind might wander while I'm trying unsuccessfully for a half hour or more to drift off.  When that happens I tend to stay up until I can't hold my eyes open, just as insurance that I'll sleep quickly.

My husband is the exact opposite, he's asleep within minutes.  Whereas I still hold on to the idea of going to bed to talk over the day and spend some time together before sleeping, for him bedtime is serious business!  So half the time I'm lying there feeling resentful (which is usually my fault anyway - I don't want to paint him as the bad guy) and he's already sawing logs, which doesn't help me get to sleep either!
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 07, 2009....
    uniquely,
Well, what's sleep when you're having fun!

    nytquill,
What kind of techniques do you use?  I find that sort of thing fascinating

My husband can never stay awake to talk to me either even if he's just sitting on the sofa.  Sometimes I feel hurt by that, so I understand.

sleep bunny here, I'm out pretty much as soon as my head hits the pillow, when I'm stressed I can fall asleep anywhere anytime.

I learned very early on in hubbies illness that sleep was a great way of coping with stress, it also helped to stop being stressed so I slept a lot.
  • MissMimi said on Feb 07, 2009....

I have serious issues with insomnia.  I'm a nightowl anyway -- how many times have I wandered through SoulCast in the middle of the night...  It's not falling asleep that is hard, it's staying asleep.  If I get 5 or 6 hours of sleep, I count that as a good night.

  • Lucytorial said on Feb 07, 2009....
MissMims... that is not good, then again some people can function quite well with 5 to 6 hours.  They say as we age we need less sleep.

Right now if I don't get minimum 8 hours I'm grumpy, my standard is 9 hours.
  • MissMimi said on Feb 07, 2009....
I very occasionally can get 9 hours, but hardly ever.  7 hours is optimal for me.  I think it's from years of having undiagnosed sleep apnea.  When it was at it's worst, I was only getting a couple of hours of very poor quality sleep a night.  It was a big part of the reason i ended up in the hospital with respiratory failure.  Well, anyhow, long boring story...  I had to learn how to sleep again.
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 07, 2009....
    Lucy,
That's good.  I believe that restful sleep is healing too.

    Mimi,
I'm sorry to hear that you don't sleep well.  At least your sleep apnea has been diagnosed.  I hope that helps.

Well, I don't know that I have issues with falling asleep once I'm actually IN bed, but I have trouble getting to bed.  I'll be dead tired, I'll know I need to get my butt in bed to get sleep, it will be late, but I have this anxiety that I'm going to miss something, or that there's something else that needs to be done, or that I'll lay there and not be able to fall asleep.  So I mostly just stay up until I cannot stand it anymore and then at that point I can drift off easily.
  • nytquill17 said on Feb 07, 2009....
CW:  It's mostly mental stuff.  I call it "meditation" but it's not true meditation in the sense that I'm trying to find nirvana or something.  But I start with the beginner's concepts of meditation, clearing and centering the mind.  Usually when I can't sleep it's because my mind is winding itself up - making to-do lists, berating myself for something I did earlier, etc.  So I need something to help me focus on the here and now, the fact that I am in bed and can't do anything about anything until tomorrow, and until I SLEEP.

Stuff like "drawing" the alphabet.  Like saying the alphabet to myself but in my mind picturing myself draw or paint every letter, thinking about every movement it takes to make each letter, rather than rushing through the little song.  Or singing myself a song but picturing every individual word in the song printed in my head as I say it (that's a great technique for pain or nausea too).

The easiest and best one though is just breathing.  Just focus on myself breathing, feeling and hearingthe air moving in and out, focusing purely on the sound.  Eventually I try to stop myself using "words" to think - just FEELing my breath instead of thinking to myself "okay now I'm breathing in...now I'm breathing out"...just be there with my body doing its thing.  It takes a lot of work to stop using words in my head and I usually can't do it.  But trying to do it helps me focus and quiet down.

I heard once that people who do serious meditation often start with the breath, because that's like the first fundamental truth.  Young or old, rich or poor, no matter what race or what kind of life you've led, everybody breathes.  And with that as a starting point you can go on to understanding other fundamental truths.  I haven't gotten that far!  But it's pretty calming to think, "everybody breathes.  Here I am being part of the universe with everbody else."

    CJ,
I had some allergy medicine once that wouldn't let me sleep.  That was the absolute pits.  I feel for you.

    moon,
Hmmm.  Who is this lovely lady that's getting your foot massages and poetry?  Inquiring minds want to know.  :-)

    Lucy,
You must be stunning with all that beauty sleep you're getting.   :-)

    Hegemone,
In the past I have used guided imagery relaxation CD's to help me fall asleep.  That could help with your bedtime anxiety if it's a big problem for you.  Anxiety at bedtime is awful.  It happened to me a lot right after I lost my toe.

    nytquill,
I really like your idea of breathing being a sort of equalizer for us all.  That's very simple yet profound.  :-)
