what web browser do you use? why do you use it?

personally, i favor opera. it's fast, doesn't chew up huge amounts of memory as i use it, and features tabbed browsing: the ability to have multiple sites open at the same time without opening yet another browser window. if you've ever worked with excel, it's sorta like having multiple worksheets within a single spreadsheet.

i've used internet explorer and frankly, i hate it. it's annoying, doesn't do tabbed browsing (which i find is teh shiz) and is vulnerable to several huge security problems, at least one of which is so bad that microsoft has admitted they cannot fix it.

i've also used mozilla firefox, which while nice, chews up more memory on my computer than i like, and i hate the fact that the URL in its tabbed browsing isn't located within the actual tabs. i find that incredibly annoying.

so what browser do you use? why do you use it? what operating system does yours use?

I use IE simply because it's what I'm used to.

Thanks for the info, maybe I will switch to Opera since I have it installed here anyway.

Also, to answer your third question, I use Windows 2000 Professional.

It is the Fox that runs non-stop on my PC and Laptop. I do have Opera installed too, but somehow I prefer FireFox.

It all started with Navigator for me, then settled with IE for a while. Did not take long before I became frustrated with the MS dog, and I even considered creating my own browser using 'C', then the Fox came slyly into the picture. Didn't want to re-invent the whell so I stayed with it. Still not perfect, but it is the best one for me for the moment.

Not to be outdone, Opera was my main browser in my late, great PDA... sniff...

BTW Ed, I didn't quite get what you mean by 'the URL in its tabbed browsing isn't located within the actual tabs'?

I use Mozilla Firefox because I prefer it over IE. But I think I might take a look at Opera.

I love the tabbed browsing feature on Firefox because not having a million windows open is a great thing. There is a plugin out there that will allow tabbed browsing in IE, btw.

I do also like that Firefox plugin that allows you to add an IE window to a tab so that if you don't have certain plugins for FF, you can open IE.

My husband uses the Mozilla browser--not Mozilla Firefox but the browser before the companies merged (or something like that) and he likes it better than Mozilla Fire. We also have Safari on our Mac laptop, and I like it pretty well too.

So, in answer to the question, Firefox is the primary/default browser on my computer, but the rest depends on what computer I am doing work on. :)

GMNI: I think what Silver means by the "the URL in its tabbed browsing isn't located within the actual tabs" is that in Firefox, the URL for whatever tab you are on is not located on the tab itself but up on the main toolbar instead. From what little I know of Opera, it's different and the URL is located on the actual tab.

Ok Zayda, I get it. That doesn't bother me though, in fact I would keep it that way with a browser of my own design, but it is good to know that some people prefer another way too.

Important thing here is to use whatever you are comfortable with.

Well up until very recently I was happily using IE7 until it got its knickers in a twist with Google Talk and I had to rebuild my system ~ arrgh!

I have since switched to Mozilla Firefox which took a while to get used to but I have been totally converted.

I used IE all my life, but then Internet Connections suddenly stopped working and it was working horribly slow. So I switched to Firefox, which worked faster and better, though the Internet shutdown was caused by some other Windows related problems...

I've been using Firefox, but I think Opera is my fave. Firefox works just fine for me so I probably won't switch back to O, but my husband swears by Opera and won't use anything else (except when he switches over to the Kubuntu OS).

I'm quite happy with Win2000 and I refuse to pay for a newer version, esp. with XP's clownish UI and all the crap Microsoft is pulling re: the precious, hallowed, might-one-day-actually-be-released Vista.

Maxthon. I like the way it works and it cleans up history,
cookies, and other crap IE leaves hanging around.

I have no idea. At my book keeping gig, it was Foxfire. Before I go online, my browser says, BlackBerry. So maybe there is a special program for it?

I use firefox, even installed it on every computer in my office so they might get a taste. IE is too full of holes, and being the default browser out there for so many untrained people makes it an easy target for malware.

I tried Opera a few weeks back, on a friend's recommendation, and I just didn't like it... a little bulky for me. And the fact that widgets open outside the browser kinda pissed me off. As for Firefox, I downloaded the "Performancing" extension, and it opens a window in the bottom of my browser for direct posting to my wordpress blog (other types are supported too, just can't figure out how to make it post to SoulCast).

    Firefox fo life.

I mainly use Safari, firefox once in a while and IE when I have too. I use Mac OSX10.4.7. I tried opera, but too many things to get confused on. Like, hey where did that button go I was just using. I hated that!

I've got IE on my computer, but my parents both use Netscape. It's what my family has always used, since the very first version.

But, inspired by your blog, I just downloaded Opera. It's got lots of features that I can fiddle with, and the widgets are fun. I've also downloaded different skins. This is totally my kind of browser, and if its more secure, I get the best of both worlds. I think tabbed browsing will take me a while to get used to.

I use IE. It was already on my laptop when I got it. I download the updates for it frequently to keep it working tip top.

Oh well, shit--I meant Firefox! I cannot believe I wrote that! Well, now that the babies are out (asleep), I can think a bit clearer.

I use Netscape and still do. But I find Firefox more versatile, specially when you're constructing your own web page.

Besides there is a very useful tool which you can install. It's called the Adsense Notifier and it shows you realtime status updates of your Adsense account without actually logging onto the Adsense website.

You can get this neat tool here at Adsense Notifier. After installing it, restart your Firefox browser and you should be able to see it working underneath.

IE - because I'm used to it. Do you suggest I change to Firefox or Opera? I'm just about to read Bordy's links re these two.
  • GMNIMan said on Aug 27, 2006....
Hey Bordy, you should have used the referral link instead of pointing the guys directly to the FireFox page.

Don't you know that you can actually earn money by referring people to switch to Firefox? Oh boy, now do I hear a scramble to get people to sign up?

    Firefox anyone???

[sigh] Unfortunately we cannot insert a JavaScript code directly into an SC post :-((

thanks, super z: that as indeed my intended meaning re: the location of the URL field. gmni man: yeah, that bothers me b/c to me, data that is tabbed sheet-specific should remain in that tab.

I find myself using all 3. IE is okay, but locks up an awful lot -- and doesn't want to pull up gmail. Firefox gets the bulk of my use, but is a pain in the butt when it comes to saving photos and/or downloading files. Opera is super for downloading large files.

Someday, just one will do it all.

    I'm on XP Pro, incidentally.

I like Firefox. I design all my websites to work best in Firefox, just because I like it so much, and I think that it will catch on with more and more users.
  • essocharis said on Aug 27, 2006....
    all 3. yay!
  • Bordy said on Aug 27, 2006....
Honestly my main problem with IE isn't the fact that it doesn't have tabbed browsing (the new one coming soon will). It is that Microsoft has sat on its laurels for so long, content in what it had because it knew 90% of the people out there would just take what was given to them. They haven't improved themselves in a long time, and that is why FF and Opera were able to grab such a share of the market.

IE is full of holes, and I don't like my stuff being that vulnerable.
  • BeautifulObscenity said on Aug 27, 2006....
I use IE. IE favors me when I design blog layouts. Many CSS codes work in IE that don't work properly in Firefox. I hate Firefox. And just like now... I can't view SoulCast in IE properly. I still have to use this Firefox.

"[sigh] Unfortunately we cannot insert a JavaScript code directly into an SC post :-(("

That is actually very very fortunate. Believe me, you don't want people to be able to insert javascript.

    @BeautifulObscenity

I'm going to assume your being sarcastic. FF follows the CSS standard much closer than firefox does. If you css codes work in IE and not FF then your CSS codes are probably wrong :)

Firefox 1.5.0.6. Back during Mozilla and early Firefox, I tried to stay cutting edge with nightlies and always going for the alphas/betas/RCs as soon as they came out, but since 1. I've relaxed. Don't want to break my extensions by jumping the gun!

I also tried Elinks 0.11.0 here, but I haven't used that as my primary browser in a couple years. (Why'd I use Elinks here? AJAXian sites often seem to leak on Fx 1.5. Could be worse..)
