Apparently news has come to light due to a recent publication of a patent that Toshiba is set to make the Zune for Micorosft. Which is interesting because Samsung and other companies are going to be competing against their own manufacturer in the music player market. Sound like a conflict of interest? Maybe. Despite any discontent people may have about Microsoft the player is going to be ground breaking due to its WiFi capabilities.
The Zune which is due to be available to the public for the Christmas season this year is going to be a direct competitor to the iPod with broadcasting and WiFi capabilities it will be a good push for Apple to come up with similar and hopefully better features. It would be nice if Microsoft/Toshiba were able to implement the ability to purchase music directly from the player. So far most of the reports have been that it will not have this feature but i'm sure that the overwhelming demand for it will push them to either put the feature in or release a firmware update that will eventually allow for this to be done on the Zune player.
It has pretty much gone that anything that Microsoft puts its name on is going to beat out the competitors but with the ever-so-similar design to the iPod it will come down to price in the end. With Microsoft's bankroll it will probably be in favor of them, especially if they make the WiFi connectivity worth-while.
As it stands right now the first player will have a 30GB hard drive and oddly enough not be running Windows in any form. The operating system has not been released or documented but the documents that have been uncovered point towards the player not using Windows Mobile or anything of that nature.
