Firstly, I'm surprised that Mr. Thompson was able to write as cohesively as he did while participating in his myriad misadventures.
And, while it was a riveting and horrifying book, the circumstances of my existence--hellish work schedule, family gatherings, occasional sparks of insight and attempts to commit them all to Word-documents--have been conspiring to prevent me from finishing it in a timely fashion.
But I'm glad I did. It seemed more about Mr. Thompson's experiences with the gang--flavored with quotes and useful bits of historical context. It was far from a glowing representation, but no less gripping. I was particularly affected by the part where the Hell's Angels actually read his book and disagreed with it. Violently. That had to suck on many levels...
I think the fact that the Hell's Angels hated his book made it all the better. They are not a group to be glorified or lionized. Thompson exposed them for the brutes they are.
Is this the first HST book you've read? I would probably have suggested "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, 1972." Awesome insights into the campaigning aspect of the political world.
