Okay, I dont claim to be perfect.  Atleast not professionally.  Not at all, I have bad days, and sometimes I dont follow state law to a "T", really no one does...

But never in my life have I been sooo appalled by a fellow cosmetologist.

As you know I myself am a licensed cosmetologist.  I love working on people and making them beautiful.  Currently thats not what im emplyed as now.  I have chosen to help my parents in the family business.  Later on, when business isnt so rough i will go back to doing what I love.

I hadnt had a haircut in a while and it was time.

I decided to try a semi new salon in town, it was one id never had my hair cut at before.  I had a massage done their and I thought the place looked classy, clean, and the person i dealt with was very friendly....

So i made an appointment.

I walked in and the receptionist asked how she could help me.  I told her i was Christina and I had 1:30 appointment.

She told me to follow her.

*she didnt introduce her self to me or welcome me in any way*

I follwed her and she didnt say a word and just put a haircutting cape on me.  She then walked over to the shampoo bowl.  Didnt even invite me this time.  I follwed her and she told me to lean back.  I began to lean back but paused before resting my neck in the shampoo bowl so she could pull my hair out from underneath me.  She snapped "Your gonna have to lay all the way back"

I have very little patience for this sort of professional behavior.  So i snapped back  "ya want me to lay on my hair or what?!"  She pulled my hair back and i finished laying back.

She started to shampoo me with ice water.  I let that go...She then dumped a bunch of shampoo on my head, thats what i assumed because she didnt tell me what she was doing or using.

So i said "What shampoo are you using?", she said "blah blah" and I said "oh, i havnt heard of that, what is it meant to do"  she said "oh i dont know, nourishes I guess".  I laughed at that!

*she should have expalined to me exactly what product she was using with the goal to sell it to me later if i liked it, i opened the door for her to give me a sales pitch and she didnt even know what shampoo she was using.  I sat there in disgust as she was slamming my head around in the bowl and spraying my face with water.

Not only was she incredibly rude and unprofessional.  But i noticed i did not have a towel around my neck and she was shampooing me with a haircutting cape, not a shampoo cape.  The towel is meant to keep capes sanitary, lord only knows how many dirty necks this cape touched that was now on me.  The shampoo cape is meant for shampooing, its waterproof!

At this point I was thinking about walking out.  But it became my mission to set her straight.  I felt bad for the girl.  There was no way she was getting any business doing what she was doing.*

After she rinsed me, she started putting conditioner, or something on my hair, again she kept me out of the loop.  I noticed she was taking an extremly long time applying it so i said "Im gonna assume this is the reconstructive deep conditioning treatment i requested"  she said yes and i said "thanks for letting me know".

She snapped a shower cap on my head and instructed me to sit under the dryer.  She turned it on and walked away!!!

*omg, at that point, i was soooo pissed i wasnt worried about helping her out in a business way i wanted her fired!  FIRST OF ALL  she didnt tell me how long i would be under the dryer!  She didnt ask me if the heat setting was ok!  Didnt offer me a drink or a magazine!  NO MAGAZINE!!!  She just walked away, not even letting me know how long i wouyld be under.*

I saw her peek her head out from around the corner and i hollered at her to come over.  She rolled her eyes a trotted over.  I asked her how long i would be under the dryer, she said 20 minutes.  I asked her "So shall i just twiddle my thumbs or can i get something to read".  She strolled to the waiting area and got me a magazine...

Oh i was just livid...

We rinsed she tossed me a towel, it fell to the floor, she picked it up and handed it to me again.  *unsanitary!!*  She began scrubbing my head with the towel!!!  *every cosmetologist in the us knows that scrubbing forcefully with a cloth on wet hair causes breakage and split ends!!!  She should have squeezed the hair and patted it dry!!!*

As she is combing and pulling my hair.  I asked her "So, you never introduced yourself, if i like your haircut how do you expect me to come back to you?"  She still hadnt smiled she looked at me cross ways and said "Heather"....

Silence....

"So, Heather,  Your having a pretty shitty day huh?"  I thought if she had id cut her a little slack...But she giggle (omg a laugh) and said "No, why would you say that?"  I told her " "Well, it seems that way because you look so pissed off and are being so rude and unprofessional"

Her eyes got big as saucers..."oh..."

Then she asked "how do you want me to cut your hair."

NO CONSULTATION!!!
*she didnt look at my hairline, she didnt look at the shape of my face, she didnt touch my hair and check for thickness or whirls or collicks, she did nothing!!!*

I did the consult for her.  I explained in detail what I wanted done.  Its just hair, i figured id be leaving balled especially sense ive most likely pissed her off with my forwardness.

Ah well, its just hair...

She began snipping away...

Her sour attiude and extreme vibe of "i hate my life" she was putting out to me indicated she didnt like doing hair.  So i asked "You like you job?"

*stylist are supose to engage their clients in conversation no exceptions!  I sat in her fucking chair for over 15 minutes without her saying a word*

She said she did and asked what i did.  I told her i too was a hairstylist.

WOAH!!! 180 degrees!

I could see the gears turning in her head

She was thinking "oopsies, this isnt some dumb housewife that doesnt know what to expect, this woman knows the law, the code of ethics the science of hairstyling and im sure shes mentally jotted down all my mistakes i gotta turn this around"

After i told her i was a hairstylist she was a totally different person.  Friendly, polite inquisitive.

My hair cut wasnt aweful, she took off more than i told her to, but i can deal with that.

I asked her about the product she sold many times and she just refused to try and sell me something.  I gave hera lecture on how product sales to clients can be a big part of income if a little effort is given.  She didnt get it...

After the cut i wondered over to the product and she was at the desk ringing me up and i hollered to her "So, you still, dont want me to buy anything???"

She wandered over and pointed at a bottle of thickening shampoo for my thick hair...I explained to her why that would be good for me and i asked her for something moisturizing...she didnt have anything i wanted and i ended up buying some samples of reconstructive treatments...

Even though, she attempted to turn it around at the end, i dont think ill be going back to her.

I have never been so appalled at a stylist before.  Her professionalism was at the bottom of the barrel.  The lowest of low...

As far as the way a customer should be treated (according to the code of ethics that every stylist is taught) she did everything wrong...

Please do not allow stylist to treat you in the manner...

I still gave her a $7.00 tip...

OMG!  I sincerely hope she isn't the owner of the salon!  You were incredibly patient not to mention very brave to let her come near your hair with a pair of scissors.  I would have gone right for her jugular if she'd rolled her eyes at me.  After working in customer service more than 30 years I can put up with a lot, but not eye-rolling.  I had a waitress fired on the spot for rolling her eyes at me when I requested a booth rather than a table so my husband, who was just out of the hospital after a femoral artery bypass, could strech his leg out on the bench.
She turned to walk ahead of me to a booth.  I tapped her on the back and asked if she'd just rolled her eyes at me.  She started to give me an excuse and I told her to come with me and tell her manager her excuse.  He told her to clock out and not come back.  Apparently it was her 3rd time and he wasn't gonna give her another chance.
I'm a very polite customer but I won't put up with crap like that.

I don't think I would have let her cut my hair.  I know hair grows back and all, but just her complete lack of interest in her chosen profession would have given me the impression that her attention to detail would result in a fucked haircut.

I'd find someone else.  Anyone else.

Oh twy, i can be very confrontational.  Its gotten me into trouble.  Not such a big deal when im in another town.  But my family with our business and all its pretty public and I try really hard not to make enimies with future potential customers of mine .  Not only do we not get their money but people talk...One person that doesnt like me tells 10 more people how horrible i am.  Anyways, my original plan was after she was finished i was gonna take her aside and explain to her my thoughts on what i just experienced.  But as it all progressed i figured when i called her rude and unprofessional it was prolly enuff.  Oh man though, my heart was racing and i was gettting that shaky feeling, i was soooo upset i wanted to start yelling at her right then and there...Im surprised i kept my composure too : P  Oh wow, that waitress thing, i never hesitate in those situations either.  I about climbed over phil and leaped out the drivers side window to attack a mcdonalds order taker.  I wont get into that, but jeepers, i know what ya mean...

Uni, i was thinking the exact same thing, i wanted to leave and i wanted to punch her and i wanted to yell and scream at her.  Something about how horribly unprofessional she was acting made me want to see it out to the end.  I wanted to see what completly uncalled for thing she did next...

That's horrible Star, but sadly I've dealt with the same thing, just without your insider knowledge.  In fact, the last girl that I had cut my hair was new, had never seen her before, she barely spoke to me (instead she spoke to everybody else in the place) and she cut my hair COMPLETELY wrong.  She cut it all like 2 or 3 inches too short, chopped in off in the back so I looked like a guy and did not do at all what I had a.) asked and b.) pointed to in the magazine.  Then when I got home I also realized one side was longer than the other.  She didn't ask where I parted my hair either.  The girl was really terrible.  I made sure to keep the receipt so I could make sure not to get her next time, as the other girls that have been there longer all do well with me.  I learned that not all hair stylists are created equal that day.

I'm definitely glad you were able to keep your composure.  Most likely she won't last long if she's that bad.  That, or she bullies the other customers that aren't cosmetologists, lies to them and they just believe whatever she says so they keep coming back.  Sad either way, but good for you that now ya know and won't be going back.

That's quite a "hair raising story"
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 29, 2009....

I would have and have walked out.  My "hair raising" story (sorry Scipio) - many years ago I used to have my hair highlighted.  I was going to this salon and actually liked my hairdresser very much.  Unfortunately, he had cancer - while expected to recover he was on Chemotherapy.  I never had an issue with his work except on this one day - I went in to get my hair highlighted and cut.  After putting the highlights on my hair he said excuse me, walked out the front door of the salon.  I was sitting there with my hair in foils, gobsmacked!  He apparently got sick because he wasn't supposed to drink while on chemo and had all night long the night before.  I continued to sit there waiting for him or someone to come up to me and tell me what happened.  After 15 minutes, I walked up to the desk and asked and was told he left.  He WHAT???  I said, I have these foils which have been in for more than 15 minutes what should i do?  I was told to have them washed out.  Again, no one came to help me, the owner - whom I knew from coming there for more than a year - was just looking over at me.  Finally the highlights were rinsed out.  I was appalled when I looked in the mirror!  I had tiger strips.  I was furious!!!!  I was pissed off.  And still, no one came to me while I was sitting in my now MIA hairdresser's station.  No one offered to help, no one offered to blow dry my hair, nothing.  People were just looking over at me.  I picked up the blow dryer, blew out my hair and went back to the desk whereupon the owner of the salon came up to me and said:  "There will be no charge"  I said:  "WHAT!!!???  You think I am paying you to look like this?  Not only will I not pay you for this mess, but I will not pay you to fix this mess when I come back in a couple of days!!!"

A few days later, the owner himself fixed my color and I never went back to that salon again!!

What's  her address?  I 'm going down there and I'm going to beat her to within an inch of her miserable life,  squirt shampoo all over her and then shoot the bitch!!!

Unless she is really busy.... in which case I'll have to make an appointment.

    Grrrrrrrr.........

Well Star, If that had been me there is no way she would have been allowed to take the scissors to my hair. No way. I'm glad it turned out ok for you. Certainly wasn't the relaxed and pleasant experience it should have been.
  • starchini said on Jan 29, 2009....

Yes hege, you definitly had a bad experience.  Getting your haircut with a professional should be the highlight of anyones day.  There should always be a consultation before a haircut.  Its imperitive to getting what ya want and making the client happy.  Im talking about a 5-10 minute conversation before she even comes near you with scissors.  She should examine your hair and shape of your face and head along with any sort of unique hair direction patterns.  She should go over almost every snip she makes and let you know before hand exactly how its gonna look.  A lot of women point to pictures of hairstyles they want and the look is impossible to achieve unless you have the same hair type as the model in the picture.  Most clients wont realize this and the stylist should let you know "well i can cut it that way but it would take extreme dedication on your part and lots of product and styling for it to look like that on a day to day basis."  Then she should make a suggestion telling you how she thinks it would be best.   They should never ever just jump right into a haircut without a full consult.....

MsStar, i wanted too, if it happened in another town i would have.  But shes just a few blocks from where i work.  And it wouldnt have been good for my business to make any enemies with a neighbor.

Scip, your so clever : P  hehe...

omg future, thats horrible!  I am just in disbelief that you would be ignored like that if your stylist walked out....I cannot believe it.  If your hair had fallen out from over processing or if the damage wasnt able to be fixed you could have sued them for all they were worth...

lol Peter, i highly doubt she is busy.

Nope not a good experience woman, it boosted my confidence a bit though...later in life im planning on opening my salon and bc there are so many for such a small town i was worried about competition, but w people like that, im not worried at all... : )

  • Hegemone said on Jan 29, 2009....
Oh Star I just remembered another instance at a different place when I was really little.  I needed a haircut in the middle of winter and my hair required a washing apparently (too long in a pony tail, too much crimp).  So they washed my hair, cut it and then were gonna turn me loose ...wet head and all!  My mom pitched such a fit that they did end up putting me under one of the hair dryers AND we got the whole deal for free.
  • starchini said on Jan 29, 2009....

oh goodness, yes we are to never let a client leave with a wet head...unless they request it : P

  • fragglesrock said on Jan 29, 2009....

oh no! what a debacle. i've had some bad experiences before but i'm so NON-confrontational that i just sit there under my cape praying for a fire alarm to go off so i can get the heck out...lol. luckily i have a WONDERFUL stylist that i found and have stuck with :)

Well, no wonder with that attitude.  She should be doing mens' hair - in a prison!!!
Consider her bumped off.  She has DONE her last DO!!!!
