I spent almost all day saturday shopping for a few things to put in my room to make if feel more "homey". Up to now it's been comfortable, but very dormitory feeling. I took down the god awful pictures that were in the room when I moved in. Some sort of duck cartoon stuff. Very "not me". I had a couple of medium sized collages of beach pics I took, so I hung them on one wall. I still need to get to Ikea and pic up another matching frame to add one more so that the wall doesn't have a gap.
While thrifting I picked up a faux victorian "thingy". It's shaped like an ice cream cone, but made of stamped and distressed metal and it hangs by a wire. I bought some good quality cream colored hydrangias to put into it and hung that by my bed. It goes with my lamp. I also picked up a set of dark brown/black bamboo placemats that I have put on top of the bedside stands to disguise the fact that not a single piece of furniture matches. I hug another vertical collage of pictures I took at the zen garden in another corner with my oriental print serving tray, ceramic take out box and silk dream keepers. I also finally got a bedskirt and replaced the "unfortunate" green and olive curtains with sheer whites to let in the light.
Last but with the most effort I bought an old frame at another thrift shop. I went to the fabric store and bought fabric and ribbons and made the bulletin board in the picture. I still need to paint the frame black to match that cool black and white geometric print. Basically I pleated the material on the top two thirds and wove black and white ribbons across the bottom third and put it in the frame without the glass. Then I tucked old famiy photos into the pleats and under the ribbons. Voila! I can't say it was my idea, but it turned out really good for under $10.
When I got home Jerry was all but insisting that he help me hang all the hangable stuff. He knows, and we've discussed, that I'm more than capable of it, but I think he really enjoys decorating. How stereotypical!! LOL Last time he hung one picture it took 20 minutes. This time he abandoned his company and it took him about 45 min to and hour to hang the other three. (He also has OCD like a mofo) I'm going to have to stop by Draegers and pick up one of those really lucious looking pastries for him and Frankie as a thank you.
So, after all that shopping and making and hanging, I was really happy to settle in on the bed and feel "at home at last". :)
