Every day the bulk of America flips on the television for just a few hours. Accepting the fact that people in this country have met a fate worse than exercise, one has to wonder: just what are we doing if not prolonging our lifespan? We are sitting in front of one of this generation’s only mediums of communication, a picture book of everything that doesn’t involve happiness in society. Perhaps there would be some happiness if people stepped outside to see it. But the point is, one is now faced with the task of analyzing what our people do intake while they watch TV, and it isn’t under TV-14 for a reason.
All the different forms of television communication: feature films, half-hour and hour-long TV-only events, and what sadly has come to be called “The News” zero in on the only thing people have seemed to become both receptive and immune to: violence. While parents sit their kids down in front of the zombifier they seem to disregard what’s happening to little Johnny’s brain, as he intakes random animals being injured in anvil/piano accidents and perceives them to be funny. Okay, so now we know where this violence trend starts. Next, PG-13 movies are admitted to have more violence than ever before, not to mention the nudity and the one f-bomb a flick. These translate into the TV-14 programs mentioned earlier, but unless a caring parent does otherwise the TV doesn’t exactly flip off when it transmits violence to any age that can press buttons on a remote.
Unfortunately, the best source of violence is also where America goes for its dose of truth and intelligence. The media. CNN, MSNBC, and all those little local stations are the main culprit of violence on television. Sure the economy is improving, but America would rather hear about the bodies found mutilated, the gunfight in high school, or the middle-eastern casualties and a picture of who could have been your little boy, who died killing the middle-eastern people.
Movies and TV shows with violence have been here since the start, but a violence-biased media is not only offending everyone with a sense of intelligence but also showing children and teenagers what a wonderful world they get to be a part of. Violence on “The News” needs to stop immediately. Sure it sells, but so do cigarettes, marijuana, and the weapons supplying the stories.
