Okay, trust me on this; despite the fact that I didn't vote for him; I want Barack Obama to do well.
I want the country to improve, because if he fails, we all fail.

I consider myself a member of the Independent party, and while I tend to lean Conservative on certain issues, Liberal on others, I'm basically a middle of the road girl.

So here we all are in a full blown recession.
Banks were greedy, Wall Street was greedy, oil companies and speculators were greedy, not to mention the people who took out mortagages they couldn't afford to pay back were greedy, and the government was apathetic or just plain inept; and I put this at the feet of all of them; Republicans and Democrats.
I'm sure most everyone doesn't trust banks, or the large corporations, or even the government for that matter.

That being said,
HELLO!  TIM GEITHNER AS TREASURY SECRETARY, NOT A GREAT IDEA!

I know, I know, you're saying it was just an innocent mistake that he didn't pay medicare or social security taxes while he was self employed.

HA!

As someone who is self employed and knows that the first thing the accountant says when you turn in your 10/99s is, "You have to pay these taxes!  Here are your self employment tax bills.   Send them in quarterly!"...... I'm not buying it and to that I say, HA!

But that's really beside the point.

If I was Obama, I'd  say to Geithner, "Sorry dude, but you didn't pay your taxes correctly. Yes, I know you paid them eventually, but it's crucial to instill confidence in the American people right now, so, mistake or not, you're not getting the job."

Okay, I'm done now.

I have to agree.  It's not like this is the only financial genius in the US.  I'm sure there are other very well qualified people who did pay their taxes and would serve the office just as well.  It's a bad break for this guy, but who said life was fair?
  • Twylarants said on Jan 14, 2009....
That's just what I said when I heard this.  I had a small business and I had an accountant who stayed on top of those things.  When she told me some tax payment was coming up I paid it.  He didn't even reply when he was notified twice!  And when he finally paid something it wasn't everything he owed.  He only paid up after he was named by Obama.
But the fact is that he's a good pick and he will be confirmed.  Those people up there in the rarefied air of Washington are held to different standards than we are and he is, after all, Obama's choice, and Obama can do no wrong.

    Well, I thank you ladies!
The whole point is, the person in charge of our money right now, needs to be super human and uber perfect!

  • Twylarants said on Jan 14, 2009....
They should all be super human and uber perfect as far as I'm concerned.  Unfortunately, they're super ambitious and uber egotistical.
  • MissMimi said on Jan 14, 2009....
I voted for Obama, I want him to do well, and he needs to un-invite Mr. Geithner to the party.  Pay the tax you owe.  I have to and so does everybody else.  Sheesh.

I don't know the reasons for picking this man under the circumstances, but I hope they were darn good ones.
  • MissMimi said on Jan 14, 2009....
Ought to be interesting to hear how he wiggles out of it at his confirmation hearing.
  • Fallyn said on Jan 14, 2009....
the only thing i can say on this.....it would depend on how big the self employment business was.......i've knonw several people who were self employed that didn't know about paying taxes and didn't hire an accountant in the first place that would have told them what they needed to know.

Bill Richardson refused his cabinet position sighting a pending investigation.  I think Geithner should do the same.  Tax dodger as the Treasury Secretary?  I don't know...  That's like a pimp running a brothel, innit?
  • secretlife said on Jan 14, 2009....
If Geithner gets the appointment i'll honestly say that it's politics as usual and that Obama is most certainly just another elitist who thinks certain rules just don't apply to certain people-  "mistake" my ass.
  • truthsayer said on Jan 14, 2009....
Gee folks...do ya think I can use all this nifty documentation on the financial decisions of  big companies, banks and now, Geithner, to help in my husband's defense?

Maybe life is really just a sitcom.  Maybe we should ask Hollywood for advice again.  As Miley Cryrus would say, "Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days, everybody knows what I'm talking about, everybody gets that way!"  Right?  So, if we only have to hold to their standards...it truly is a "whatever" kind of world, right?  That'll save us a lot of money in the legal, judicial and penal systems!  We'll all just do whatever our leaders do.  No problems.  No worries.  No consequences.

    Hmmm,

you've got a good point there truth.
  • truthsayer said on Jan 14, 2009....
Yeah, but it's the "no consequences" part that only seems to be true for "them".

"We" would not get away with what "they" do.

    Y'know?

Love y'all anyway...maybe even more now that things are, well, as are at this point in our "history".

I can't put my finger on it.....but something strange is going on in politics today......morals....scruples and rules have all been thrown out the window....politicians are blatantly corrupt, and no one seems to care.....I feel like something really big is in the works and none of us know what we are in for.
  • truthsayer said on Jan 14, 2009....
    That is true D6fer.

This is exactly why I have been writing.  Not just the book, but even here on SC.

This is my cry:  Wake up!

Do you know what happens when a nation takes God out of it's government, it's institutions and organizations?  The Bible is perfectly clear about this.  You are seeing it happen, right before your eyes.

God has always had His hand on America and Israel.

If we don't wake up as a nation and remember that we only exist because of what our Forefathers called, "God's Providence"... You WILL see things you never would have believed possible in America.

You can take that to the bank.

I will answer your questions, of course, but I have to ask LadyPickersplock's permission first.  Or I will have to start a new blog on it.  I don't care which way, I just don't want to keep hijacking pickers blog.  I swear, if we met, we'd know we were sisters ; )  I love her writing, her one act plays are hilarious : )  But this blog was a serious observation about our country and the way things seem to have changed:  Politics As Usual have become exceptionally amoral.  I don't want offend her in anyway.  I love her and have tons of respect for her.  What say you pickers?

    Love, love, love you all.

Blog away Truth. I love to inspire other people, and I would never be offended.

You know, the separation of church and state is a good thing. I don't think anyone wants a particular religion dictating how we live our lives, BUT we do need to follow some kind of moral code.

I mean right is right and wrong is wrong, right?

The whole point of having a political office is to serve and protect the people, not to get chicks, make money, and have power.

  • truthsayer said on Jan 18, 2009....
Hi pickers, hi fallyn.  I haven't been on here in a few days.  I will blog about this soon.  It just so happens that I had been reading the way that nations experience God's correction.  But this is a serious topic, and I don't just want to throw out some stuff and see what sticks to the SC wall.  I want to make it as simple and as direct as I can.

I'll be back on in a few days.  Like later this week.  I'll see what I can come up with that is appropriate, and write about it.  Thanks for bringing this up pickers.  Thank you fallyn for asking me that simple question too.  It makes me think about what I should say and how I should say it to you.  That is always good for me.  I have given it a lot of thought, and even sat down to write it out on here...in picker's blog.  But it wasn't the right time yet.  It will be though.

I'll talk to you two soon.

    Be blessed,

    Truth
