I just got asked to be in a wedding by a girl I don't really like. We've known each other for a couple of years, and I see her at mutual parties, but we're not good friends at all. Then out of the blue, she asks me to be in her wedding! Either she needs a cute single girl or she really likes me. But honestly, I don't have the money or the desire. How do I tell her tactfully "No"?

Bridesmaids should only accept the position if they are able to devote the time, energy, and unfortunately money. It should already be a given that you at least LIKE the soon-to-be Mrs., which you said you don't. I think a little white lie will work, or if you have the guts, you can tell her straight out, "I'm so honored to be asked, thank you for thinking of me, but I'm not able to fully devote myself to be a bridesmaid." If she asks for specifics, say work is an issue scheduling wise, and you probably couldn't make it to the pre-wedding events. If I were her, I wouldn't be upset. I'm sure she wants as little trouble as possible. Better to have to pick another bridesmaid than to have one who's heart isn't really in it. Oh, and make sure to wish her well when you say no. Let's us know how it goes! -

Well, folks, as an update, I've told her no, because I'll be out of town. Which means that I've gotten out of the wedding as well. Yay! Thanks for the support and for not making me feel like the witch of the year! -

I would do what uptowngirl suggested, but in my case I would ensure that I am really out of town during the time of the wedding. That way you will not be telling a lie, well not entirely anyway!
