I am not a wealthy man. Since M>S> forced me into premature retirement I have spent most of my time playing with computers. I don't drink, smoke, gamble or womanize. I never spend a penny more than I have to.........except when it come to computers! I have a 3 year old pentium4 with a 120gig HDD, 512 megs of ram, running Window XP home. The midi tower has two fans and is a tad noisy! and the beast runs a little slowely, but works fine!

I also have a pentium4 with 2 gigs of ram, I60gigHDD intel quad 1.6 processor. It runs Windows XP professional. The tower runs 2 fans whisper quiet and cool as!  Both comupers have Dvd burners and floppy discs as well as a bunch of USB ports.

Should I spend $500 building a new beast, or should I just be content with what I have? $500 is little more than a pack of smokes a week over a year. Jenny says I should do what I want. (it will not break the bank!)  I have already built it in my mind but.....!!! What should I do. Remember computers are my hobby, just about all I do!

rupert- I'd say since its your hobby and all you do, go for it.

I'm not a computer geek, but $500 doesn't sound like much money for a new one. Would it give you noticeably more than you have already?
  • destinydiva said on Jan 06, 2009....
I think you should treat ya self rupe, especially as it wont break the bank...  go for it!!!!!  :-)   my boyf's hobby is building computers too, he gets all excited by fans and gigabytes and stuff.... he has this water cooling system thing he built in  his which looks a bit dodgy to me but it won him an award and it speeds ya machine up and takes away the noise!! might be worth you looking in to it??  ...if you cant justifying a brand new one, you could always re vamp one of your old ones??  xx
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 06, 2009....
It's not extravagant, so why not indulge a passion?  Like you said, it won't break the bank and it is your hobby.  We all need to foster hobbies since they are what keeps our souls alive.

    hey rupert-
you can't take it with you!
don't think about this anymore.........go spend that $500 and enjoy every minute!!!!
  • Lucytorial said on Jan 06, 2009....
Um Rupert??? just do it, we actually spent $1500 of a new alien box because our older one nothing wrong with it mind you, was noisy, old and clunkity clunkity.... $500 is not a lot of money I'd go for it, you gotta have something to keep you active? so if it isn't a good old shed, then let that puter rip!
  • curmudgeon said on Jan 06, 2009....
I guess the question would be what do you plan to do with the new beast that you cannot do with the old?

You could build a noise reduction box around the old beast for way way less than 500 bucks, if the beast's performance is satisfactory. But it sounds like you want a new computer, so why not just splurge?
  • Mamie said on Jan 06, 2009....
I think you should definitely do this! You will feel like a million bucks so what's 500? drop in the bucket!! Go for it, Rupe!
  • cntlvmenuf said on Jan 06, 2009....
Ha....I think its done in your mind and now its time you actually put it into practice. It sounds like it will be good mind exercise for you.... Its not like you buying one to just stare at it. You deserve to treat yourself once in a while...and when a decision is this agonizing...I'd say put your mind at rest...get that beast and work on it. Its ok...very ok to spend your money on yourself :-)

If you can afford it and it will make you happy, go for it. You dont have to NEED it!! Enjoy and have all the fun you can.

I would LOVE to have the machines that you have......would you ship them to me when you will have your new baby?....LOL...

    Have fun!
  • Hegemone said on Jan 06, 2009....
I'd say if it's within your realistic means, do what makes you happy.  I mean, that's how I try to do things, if I can afford it without making myself go without something crucial like food, or badly needed new clothes, or something like that ... then I go for it.  If it's your hobby, and is a lot of your life, that's not something to feel guilty for.
  • pearl35 said on Jan 07, 2009....
I think that you should get a better one.  160 gigabyte isn't very big these days and you need more that 2 gigabytes of ram to run a program smoothly.  Someday terrabytes will be more affordable.  So maybe it just depends on what you want your computer to do.

The planet is dying. Excessive consumerism led America into this recession.  The gap between the haves and have-nots is growing.  Global warming could kill us all.  Billions of people have nothing - literally.

You decide yourself.  I won't judge you........

If it is 14 hours, that would mean you posted about 5:00pm on Tuesday? Anyway.... wants V needs? Millions of people, through no fault of their own,are starving, and here is me,my biggest problem is should I get something I can do without or not?
  • rupert7 said on Jan 07, 2009....
beyondtheveil - I don't know if you could go into a store and come out with a complete computer system for $500 these days! Maybe, but it would be very basic! I am talking about buying a box (case) and buying the goodies to go in it! Actually building the computer. I already have the monitor and other periphials to go with it. Even so, $500 will only build a fairly modest beast, no, it would not give me a great deal more than I have, some but not a LOT. It would however give me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction. The case I have selected has rave reviews and has beed described as butt kicking!! It is a beautiful case!

Desty ....boyfriend??......what have I missed here!!! (good on ya: GRIN!) A water cooling system? Hmmm......does sound a bit dodgy, water and electricity don't mix very well! If he got an award it must be safe. A brilliant idea good on him! Is he a gamer? Sounds perfect for a gamer as they need a a lot of cooling, I am not one. Thanks Desty!

Uniquely - You are right it is not extravagant but it is not reallt neccessary either! These days an invalid pension is my only income, while it is adequate it does not leave a lot of spare cash! What if the fridge or washing machine pack up? or a big repair on the car crops up? But then, life is full of "what ifs!"

secret.....your right, you can't take it with you. For instance,I remember my dad being given an expensive bottle of aftershave. He didn't want to "waste" it! When he died,it was still unopened! what did he get out of that?? It was given to me and I opened it and used it. It was not going to become a family heirloom!!! smile But what is all our savings get spent (we have more than $500:smile) and some big emergency comes along?

Lucy....damn! now we are in this unit, I miss the garden and the famous shed!! When all the hens came to cackle,I used to retreat to the shed!! Now I can only retreat to the computer room! One particular hen chases me,cackle, cackle, cackel!!! Just do it! Oh Lucy, your are a real temptress! lol

Curmudgeon....heres the thing, I don't plan to do anything I can't do right now. My body is pretty well stuffed,I can't do what I used to, so this is what I do do because it is what I like doing! The older of the computers runs pretty hot,a noise reduction box might make it hotter! This is the puter I make all the visitors use! hehe

  • fragglesrock said on Jan 07, 2009....

huh?! don't know what all that stuff means..far as i know i have a hampster running on a wheel inside of my 'puter ;)  nah...just messin' with ya. i got a little story for you, you ready? good.

i used to hate my ex-husband with every breath of my life and every ounce of my body.  one day the kids came home from dad's house and were regalling in all the movies that dad had bought.  I WAS PISSED. how dare he spend so much money on movies?!?!  well...my best friend stepped up and slapped me in the head and said..."frags...quit being a witch...that is his 'cigarette" money...he doesn't smoke cigs like you do...he can afford to buy a movie or two per week"

that snapped me right the hell out of my snit!  i say...if that's your "cigarette money" GO FOR IT! do what makes you happy :)

  • rupert7 said on Jan 07, 2009....
Mamie, To me $500 is a bit more than a drop in the bucket! to me, though affordable! My parents grew up in the time of the great depression of '29 and always taught me not to waste money. But it would make me feel good in some ways and guilty in others!

314...... its been a done deal in my mind for weeks! I    hate spending money on me! My wife buys all my clothes because I refuse to try anything on! Computers are good, clothes? any old rags will do!! Wifey says if I want to do this then I should. Maybe I will allow myself to be convinced. There is only one negative reply here.

Woman .... I must admit I am running out of responses here,so many people are supporting the " do it" side of the arguement! pretty overwhelming! thank you for your positive input!

Ginger, looks like I just might have to do ahead and do it! The oders computer is not worth shipping anywhere! The other will be my second puter,to be used by visitors, ie the half doxen girls who come here to check their emails, and usually spend hours on facebook!

Hedge -  no such thing as badly needed clothes..lol You are right though! thanks

Pearl35 -  your right, 160 gig is small today, but I am only using 12 gigs of it, do I need a bigger one? I can get a one tetrabyte  drive for $139 today, how cheap is that? (Maxtor) I really don't need that much storage!

PieterOpie....me thinks you may be Dutch? I have a couple of Dutch friends. Actually,my grandkids call me "Opa" and I am not Dutch! Anyway, I know what you are saying and it is true. If I do not buy a new computer, who will it benefit? If I donate all my money to some charity, who will it benefit? Most of it would be sucked up in "administrative costs" and pad out the wallet of some westerner! And if it all went where I intended it to go,who would in benifit and fot how long?

If I were you I would build a new mega-super-duper computer and ignore all the things that might make me feel guilty.  Why, especially after that guilt laden post earlier?  Because I am a hedonistic hypocrite of monumental proportions.

Have fun and I'll see you at the end of the world.
  • rupert7 said on Jan 07, 2009....
PieterOpie alright! - lets dance together at then end of time! Did you ever read the Michael Moorcock Trilogy!

The Dancers at the End of Time is a series of science fiction novels and short stories written by Michael Moorcock, the setting of which is the End of Time, an era "where entropy is king and the universe has begun collapsing upon itself".[1] The inhabitants of this era are immortal decadents, creating flights of fancy using power rings which draw on energy devised and stored by their ancestors millions of years prior. Time travel is possible, and throughout the series various points in time are visited and revisited. space travelers are also common, but most residents of the End of Time find leaving the planet distasteful and clichéd. The title of the series is itself taken from a poem by a fictitious 19th Century poet, Ernest Wheldrake, which Mrs. Amelia Underwood quotes in The End of All Songs.[

    Eh, no.

But it sounds like a riot of fun.  Will we need to make a booking?  Tickets? Party drugs?
  • rupert7 said on Jan 07, 2009....
Bookings??? - hell no!  I don't do drugs but they would be popular there. I used to have a hellova crush on Mrs Amelia Underwood,I gotta tell you! Tall slender red head with sea green eyes!

if you don't need much storage, then no need to buy a larger drive.
  • blaster said on Mar 17, 2009....
Those are small HDD. Are they SATA?
Not much ram to speak of, have you got dedicated video ram?
Unless you need it or like you say it's your only hobby? Can't you find something more creative to do?
Seems a bit of a dull thing to do, just build more, when they're so soon redundant and you can get something better etc not far down the track.
You're just doing it for the sake of it, it's your hobby. I'd say think before you jump.
  • rupert7 said on Mar 17, 2009....
blaster - hello, Ironically what you say here is pretty much the advice i have always dished out to others! I think that as soon as something (in this field at least) is on the market,it is already obsolete because the next upgrade is already on the drawing board,so to speak!

My last upgrade had Vista and I hated it! (Vista) so I  "down graded" to XP Prof, which I love.( Microsoft itself admits XP is the biggest rival of Vista, with many people down grading!) I now have 3 gigs of ram which is pretty much the maximum XP will recognize. Look, I am more of a dabbler than an expert, so I do not pretend to know all the technical ins and outs but it seems that a 32 bit system has a ceiling of 4 gigs of ram, and most systems will not recognize more than three gigs. On the other hand a 64 bit system will theoratically support up to 128 gigs of ram. 64 bit is the way of the future, they say.

My new hard drive is 320 gig SATA with 16 meg cache. No dedicated ram,it is shared, which I have set at 128megs,which is plenty for me, (could double it) I  thought about a seperate VGA card but decided that the extra expense is not justified in my case, as I am not a gamer and I am not doing any demanding graphics work. I am using a Cooler Master centurion5 case, which is quite smart, though not overly beautiful! lol I came in $2 under budget and am happy as Larry.
Whats more important than being satisfied? This is a budget system - I am on a pension and have a limited income,I spend money on nothing else really. If i had the money,I could build something much better than this right now, its not about having the latest and greatest for me, I know that will never happen. Thanks for dropping in.
