Did you hear about the co-workers who won $200 million in the lottery?  4 were out of work the day the numbers came out, but apparently they were going in together for 5 years before they won.  Now the 4 are going to court to try to get their share of the winnings.

Some say not everyone participated each week so they should be excluded.  Then there is the fact that the winning ticket was purchased with the money from a previous small win, so the 4 say they should be included.  One guy was out that day because he was cleaning his house for the rest of them to have their Xmas party there.

Regardless of the details, would you vote to include the 4 in your winnings?

well, I would, but knowing the nature of people I dare say they'll spend a lot of that money they won on attorneys.

i think that since the ticket was purchased with winnings from a previous win it should be shared.  i would like to think that i would vote to include the 4 in my winnings, but what i have found in my life is that i cannot judge until i've walked that path....  :)
  • Fallyn said on Jan 05, 2009....
i'm sorry but i think they should be included. .....it's not possible to add another 4 people in to 200million?

i think that's just being greedy to exclude them.

as for the legality of it....... i have no idea.
  • MissMimi said on Jan 05, 2009....

Well, I think the best way to solve this dilemma would be to give all the money to me.  :D

That lottery story is actually a local one, about 50 miles from here.  I didn't know that the ticket had been purchased with previous winnings.  That kinda puts a different spin on it.  The only ones who will win big with this one are the attorneys.

I have a small group of 5 of us at work that play the power ball every week.  We just started, but I put in if someone is out for the day because I know that they will reimburse me when they come back.  I make copies of the original ticket and give them each one, so there is no way one could be left out.  I think they should be included.. yes.  This goes to show how money can change a person over night.
  • Hegemone said on Jan 05, 2009....
Eh, I'm pretty sure I could share $200 M, even with the taxes coming out.  I mean, shit, it's not like it's a measly, tiny amount ... they'll still get plenty even if it's divided!  Aside from that ... I suppose if on this particular ticket purchase somebody didn't pay, then they'd have to back off a bit, as you purchase tickets individually and NOT in that far of advance.  Bottom line ... it's $200 M, I'd share THAT much!
  • pickersplock said on Jan 05, 2009....
    That's pretty sad.
    Fighting over $200 million!
I guess the classy thing to do would be to share with everyone.
    But not everyone's classy.
I ask you.....how much money are they going to waste going to court?
  • Lucytorial said on Jan 05, 2009....
oh how it brings out the selfishness huh? they all deserve a share and if I were of a win that big I'd more than likely give most of it away but NOT to a lawyer.. thats sick!
  • woman said on Jan 05, 2009....
Don't you think 40 million apiece would be enough? I know greed is part of the human condition but I think everyone could and should be happy here. woman
  • RollingC said on Jan 05, 2009....
I still think the lottery system is all messed up.  If it's about spreading the wealth around and giving more people a chance to live a better life then they (the Lottery Dept.) should limit the winnings to 1 or 2 million and if it rolls over then there should be more numbers drawn.  Example....200 million equals 100 lottery tickets drawn and each ticket winner gets 2 million unless they buy more than one ticket.
That would certainly spread the wealth around and give more people a chance to win.
The tickets that are drawn and nobody wins then that money rolls over for the next drawing.
But then that's only my humble opinion.

I don't know the whole story but I'm guessing they voted among themselves to exclude the 4.  I'd be the unpopular one with my vote because I'd vote to include them.

Twy:  Quite well, dear lady.  The link I put up takes you to a news article about some guy in CT who won the lottery and died the next day.  Some luck, huh?  Kinda like the guy who stayed home to clean it...  But dead...  :D

You've been well I take it?  Well enough, I hope?  ;)

all it would take is for one of the four to cark it in misterious circumstances ..sad part about it all is are any of them any different to the others if the tables were turned.i personaly they should all share in the win.blue.
  • PieterOpie said on Jan 06, 2009....
The fact that the tickets were bought with previous winnings has nothing to do with it. Had there been none then those present would have put money into the pool.  The four who were "out of work"; were they unemployed?  I assume that is what was meant.  If so then they were no longer part of the syndicate unless specified.  The ticket/s were bought for the syndicate of current members.  The man who was cleaning his house still worked there and thus was a current member of the group and gets his share.

If the four not working had lost their jobs on that day or even that week then it would be valid for them to make a claim and only after the second week would they no longer be eligible.

The situation is not !00% clear to me, but those are the two possible solutions according to the way I see it.

Ex-members who had left or were fired could make claims forever if they had ever made a contribution otherwise.  You would need to specify and agree for how long after having worked there that you were entitled to be included.

In my opinion if you leave the place then you are out of the syndicate and it's just too bad.  If the other felt some pity then it is up to the individual to share their money but I see no real reason other than greed and jealousy to feel included by those ex-workers.  They need to get a grip on reality and accept that they are big fat loser dorks.  HAHAHAHA.....  (sorry... hehehe)

You are either in or not.  Not in when there is a big win.  It's the luck of the draw.

I hope they lose the case and have to pay court costs. That will teach them that greed is very unattractive.  Then again.... greedy people don't see things the way normal people do.  They just want..... more and more.... gimme gimme......

    Gross. Very unattractive....
  • pusscat said on Jan 06, 2009....
Although you put it quite harshly PieterOpie, i have to agree with you.  If the ones that were 'out of work' were no longer employed by that company, how can they be in the work's syndicate?  Imagine if every employer that left continued to have a claim on the lottery even if they didn't put money it.  If I were working there and putting my hard earned money in each week, I'd be rather annoyed about that.  The chap that was cleaning his house for their Christmas do, sound like he was either still employed there, hence he is definitely in the syndicate or he has only very recently left or why would they be going to his for a party?  Sounds like he is due his share.

I am extremly generous though I say it myself but everytime people leave an employer they cant still claim to be in the syndicate, I mean does that mean they still get a Secret Santa gift and go on work holiday excursions etc?  You leave an employer - end of story.  Where would the line be drawn, when they got another job?

Many people quote wrong by saying 'Money is the root of all evil'.  That was never written or said, it is "the love of money is the root of all evil" and by gum I agree.

i hope this finds you doing good! have a good day take care~see ya

I found a news article but I don't know how to link it.
They've been playing for 5 years although not everyone played every week.  Apparently they had an oral agreement to share with the entire group, but that's easy to say before you actually win.  And I don't think oral agreements hold up in court.
The fact that the winning ticket was purchased with winnings from a drawing in which they had all participated may help to find in favor of the 4 who weren't in work that day.
The total win was $207 million, so what do you get after taxes...about $65 million?
Split between the 16 and the 4 would be...$3 million something?  (I don't have a calculator here).   I'll take it.  That doesn't make you filthy rich these days but I'd be very comfortable.
I could buy a 30 second ad in the Super Bowl...lol.

I would defo include the others,  its prob gonna cost them the same amount of money in legal fees fighting to not share it

Hi Des!  HNY to you, too!
Grape ~ I didn't realize you linked a news story.  How sad that is.  I always joke that I'd drop dead of a heart attack as soon as I found out I won, but this poor man died the day he bought the ticket.
But I got a chuckle out of the remark by his 79 year old wife...she's thinking of buying a Corvette!  Lol!

I noticed that some people take the kind approach (generous) and want to give the ex-employees a share.  That is very sweet especially currently but that is easy to say when you are not in that situation.  When those giving souls have a big win we can all come and rub ourselves up and down your body and purrrrr, bat our eyelashes at you and look poor.

To cases where there is a loose arrangement and some people pay and others don't and it's all a bit of a piecemeal situation, that is a recipe for disaster.  As soon as the "big one" is announced everybody wants their share whether they paid or not and to claim that the contributions sort of balance out over time is a little too messy in my book.  In that case whoever collects the money must keep a list with the date and the names for that week and you are either on the list or not.  No name - no share.  I am generous in some things but I am more fair than I am generous.  I would not want deserving people to miss out but I do not like the idea of some sponge getting a share when clearly they do not have any entitlement.  Forget it buster. No way Jose.... Tough luck... stiff cheese... blow it out your arse (that is ass to you Americans, hehe).

Money has a very weird effect on people.  It is not the route to happiness.  Many studies have proven that those who need to watch their pennies are generally happier than those who never think about having to scrimp or save up for anything.  Wealthy people take it for granted.  I generalise of course but I have found that to be the case.

Then there is the notion that when poor hard working people have a big win the manage to blow it one way or another without any regard for the long term and end up with nothing in a fairly short time.  They never invest in the future to assure future security and their generosity is part of their undoing.  Some even go crazy and get into trouble and the results can be rather tragic.  The idea is to stay calm and pretend for a while that you only won a little. Don't kick the boss in the groin... don't quit... don't buy everybody a house and a car....  just relax.

To pussycat:  You CAN still edit Dorathy......  as I discovered by accident being a newbie and all.  Next to you name on your post you will notice a symbol that looks like a little flag.   Click on that and you will go to a blank text entry box.  Now you click on your "go-back" button (browser) and you will find yourself back in that block of text.  Just edit it and away you go.....
