When people type "LOL" how often are they really laugh out loud. I'll bet that 90% of the time their is no sound at all. They are just trying to hype up their joy-levels for reasons known only to them. I suspect they are saying "I am laughing much more than I really am because I am have a really good time here in my little bedroom where I sit all alone and am basically miserable"
Yeah, that's right.... They are lying. They are too lazy to indicate precisely how happy or amused they are so they just put LOL....There - finished. Well, I think they are full of it. I like to challenge them. I ask them "did you really laugh out loud? Well did you?"
We need to invent some abbreviations for "chuckle" or "grimace" and even "sneer". There are lots of subtle differences....
People even put LOL just to be polite or to fob people off. They might say something awful to you and then put LOL to indicate they were only joking. WHAT!!!??? Don't take it. Challenge them and put them on the LOL-spot. Insist on decible levels. How loud was that LOL exactly? huh???
Actually when I am actually LOL... I often type - LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL..... The long the string the louder the laughter.... AND alway real I might add. I know it doesn't really mean "laughing out loud out loud out loud out loud...." because that makes no sense. BUT that's not the point. The point is emphasis. It expresses a bulk amount of loud laughter.
But I still like the good old HHAHHAHHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAAA!!!!! You can tailor it to be exactly representative of your laugh.
There.... that's the way I feel about it and you can like it or lump it. LOL.

opie- I use the haha when I show laughter. Almost always I'm not laughing out loud. I can haha in my mind just fine. I have a few suggestions for an alternate lol when not laughing out loud.
lumb- laughing under my breath
gimm- giggling in my mind
cs- chuckling silently
js- just smiling
ss- snickering softly
then when you do laugh- cwgg- chortling with great gusto

You know when something is so funny and you laugh so hard you go all silent dog whistle and its not even audible youve just got this huge smiley face and appear as though your gasping for air or choking? Well, thats usually my LOL...and if its funny but not dog whistle funny, i dont capitalize it, its just lol...So there! : P (Grimace)

Those are perfect, Beyond. I do a lot of gimm. I use "hah!" to signify that one-sound laugh with a smile. It actually sounds like a cross between a hah and a hmm.

Beyondthepail.... I just noticed your list of suggested abbreviated laughter and I like what I see. There should be far more subtlety just like your examples. But how are you going to get others to know what they mean? It will take a massive campaign of education and an awful lot of jokes. -

on second thoughts...... there is no mistaking my multi-purpose stretchable and extendable haha's. HAHA can expand to any length you like. And more or less emphasis is achieved by varying lowercase and capitals and bold, italic and so forth. Then there is the vowel factor. There is the regular hahaha and there is hehehe (chuckle) or heeheeheehee (giggle) or HEEEE HEEE HEEEEE (manic shriek) or ho ho ho (droll sarcastic laugh)..... etc.. The variations are many.
The thing is that no further education of the reader is required. And think of the money we'll save not having to buy all those jokes.....

No way.... I take them on time. Sometimes I even pretend it is time for pills. In fact sometimes I pretend I have no set times. Pill time is a time of joy and some relief - mainly to those around me...... although I am not entirely too sure.
Besides they are sealed in those bubble and foil packets and cannot get dusty unless I remove them and leave them lying around.... and that would never happen. I like my pills to much for that.
