I've been thinking lately about how important it is to find the fun in life, even when it seems like it's hard to come by. I'm no stranger to having those moments where it seems like there is just nothing redeemable in this life I've been given. But that's never a truly accurate picture. That's just how it feels sometimes. And it's up to me to find joy in places that maybe other people would overlook. And it really is the small things that matter sometimes. I am always on the lookout for humor everywhere, because nothing eases a bad mood better than a little laughter right?
So here are a few random things that I've found truly entertaining recently. And maybe no one else would laugh at them, but that's okay. Because funny is in the eye of the beholder. And I'm very easily entertained!
The other day at work I cracked myself up over something totally ridiculous. We have this computerized messaging system that's kind of like an IM program except it's not really designed to have conversations. It's just a little screen that pops up that says, "you have a phone call on line 2" or if a client shows up it'll say, "Bob has arrived" Simple stuff like that.
Well we had a client last week who was named Jesus (pronounced Hay-suess) I knew he had an appointment, but I didn't think anything of it until my receptionist sent me this message: "Jesus has arrived" For some reason I couldn't help but roll with laughter because it sounded so funny to me. And instead of responding with my usual, "okay" I typed in, "halleljuah! We're saved!" I mean what else could you possibly say when a message pops up on your screen that says "Jesus has arrived!"? It was hilarious. Even more so when Jesus turned out to be a short little bald Mexican man with a handlebar mustache. Tell me you wouldn't die laughing. Okay, maybe it was just me. But my receptionist thought it was funny too!
Another funny random moment I experienced recently was when Nat and I decided to go shopping for clothes for her. This is normally a pretty boring excursion for me because I'm not that excited to shop for clothes. And it was after Christmas so everything was crowded, but Nat wanted to get some good sale items. So I went with her begrudgingly. But she has a way of making even the most mundane shopping experiences funny. She was looking at stuff and she came across this hideously bright green jogging suit for sale. She exclaimed, "OMG...someone killed Kermit the Frog and now they're selling his carcass as a jogging suit!"
She makes me laugh so much. And suddenly the shopping trip turned into an adventure to find the ugliest outfit possible and wonder who would ever wear it. And then we moved onto Bath and Body Works so she could test out all the different lotion smells. This was great because we were like fragrance critics giving our review of everything. One of them Nat said smelled like warmed up cucumbers dipped in lemon cake frosting. And I said another one smelled like an old lady who had been locked in a closet with incense burning, and had lightly sprinkled herself with a hint of cinnamon.
Basically we were cracking each other up endlessly, even if no one else in the place understood what was so funny. But that didn't matter since we were amused and happy.
Then last night we ran up to the drug store to pick up some vitamins. And they only had one register open and there were at least ten people in line. It was kind of frustrating since we just wanted to get our crap and leave. And usually there aren't that many people at this place anyway. But the line was not moving, and I realized that the reason it wasn't moving was because some old dude was haggling over the price of his Just for Men hair color.
I about died because I'd never seen a man buy that stuff before, much less haggle over the price. But this guy was probably about 60 something and he was there with 3 other guys who looked about 20. All the young guys were dressed in black jackets and ripped jeans and had beanie hats on their heads. Bascially your typical "I wanna be a rock star" look. But the older guy also had an earring and a beanie and a jacket just like them. And he was buying hair dye! Someone's having a mid life crisis and trying to hang out with people a quarter of his age. Was he trying to fit in with them? I don't think they were his sons since one of the guys called him by name, and another one called him 'dude'. He told him, "dude, just buy it!" I think he was getting impatient at the price wars too.
But suddenly I didn't really mind being stuck in line forever because I was entertained by watching this scene unfold in front of me. I love trying to figure people out by seeing what they buy and how they interact with others. It's amusing to me.
So these are just some examples of how I try to turn situations that aren't that exciting or fun into something better. I see the little things. And in seeing those little things and appreciating them for what they are, I think I've found the secret to finding a little happiness when everything seems bleak.
I'm not saying a few funny things can fix a life or make someone be cured of all their worries and fears. But if you stop to notice the little things that make life interesting and fun, it gives you a break from the rest of it for awhile. And it gives you that little boost to help you over the hurdles. It's made a difference in my life and I've learned just how important it is to not only find the little joys in life, but truly experience them for all they have to offer. And it puts a smile on my face where there once was nothing.
So instead of waking up everyday being worried about what might happen or if I can handle the stress of it all, I wake up and wonder, "I wonder what funny things I might come across today?" And it's made all the difference in the world to me.....
