Excerpts from Johann Hari: The true story behind this war is not the one Israel is telling from the Independent:

This morning, and tomorrow morning, and every morning until this punishment beating ends, the young people of the Gaza Strip are going to be more filled with hate, and more determined to fight back, with stones or suicide vests or rockets. Israeli leaders have convinced themselves that the harder you beat the Palestinians, the softer they will become. But when this is over, the rage against Israelis will have hardened, and the same old compromises will still be waiting by the roadside of history, untended and unmade.

To understand how frightening it is to be a Gazan this morning, you need to have stood in that small slab of concrete by the Mediterranean and smelled the claustrophobia. The Gaza Strip is smaller than the Isle of Wight but it is crammed with 1.5 million people who can never leave. They live out their lives on top of each other, jobless and hungry, in vast, sagging tower blocks. From the top floor, you can often see the borders of their world: the Mediterranean, and Israeli barbed wire. When bombs begin to fall – as they are doing now with more deadly force than at any time since 1967 – there is nowhere to hide.

There will now be a war over the story of this war. The Israeli government says, "We withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and in return we got Hamas and Qassam rockets being rained on our cities. Sixteen civilians have been murdered. How many more are we supposed to sacrifice?" It is a plausible narrative, and there are shards of truth in it, but it is also filled with holes. If we want to understand the reality and really stop the rockets, we need to rewind a few years and view the run-up to this war dispassionately.

The Israeli government did indeed withdraw from the Gaza Strip in 2005 – in order to be able to intensify control of the West Bank. Ariel Sharon's senior adviser, Dov Weisglass, was unequivocal about this, explaining: "The disengagement [from Gaza] is actually formaldehyde. It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so that there will not be a political process with the Palestinians... this whole package that is called the Palestinian state has been removed from our agenda indefinitely."

Excerpts from CNN: US weapons 'killing innocent civilians' in Gaza from The Raw Story:

As Israeli warplanes continue to bomb Gaza, attention is turning to the role of American-made weapons in the deadly attacks, which have now killed over 400 and wounded 2000, including many civilians.

CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr believes that Israel's use of American weapons against civilians "is becoming very problematic." She notes, for example, that the 2000 pound bomb which killed a Hamas leader and members of his family on Thursday "is part of the billions of dollars that Israel has spent buying weapons from the United States."

Israel's use of American-made weapons in attacking Gaza has been a matter of offical concern for years. In 2002, the State Department announced it was monitoring possible violations of the Arms Export Control Act after the Israeli military used an American-made jet to drop a laser-guided bomb that killed a Hamas leader and 14 civilians in a crowded Gaza City neighborhood.

Just last September, Congress approved a $77 million dollar deal to sell a thousand Boeing GBU-39 bunker-buster "smart bombs" to Israel. The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday that these small, GPS-guided missiles have now been used on underground tunnels and launchers in Gaza.

    hi shelter

i went to Israel shortly after the "War with Lebanon" and was able to travel from the North to the South, and the East to the West. I was smuggled past hours of checkpoints on Christmas Eve '06 into Palestinian Bethlehem where I met Palestinians and UN workers on their behalf. I say this to qualify my next statements bc I am not speaking from a point of view that comes strictly from the media.

Genocide is still happening on Earth as we speak. In the US this was carried out under the guise of 'Manifest Destiny' - this was a Christian call to eliminate the hoards of "Pagan" heathens from the new Christian lands. Israeli's also see themselves as the Chosen People and when they came to Palestine as refugee's of a genocidal maniac, they began to align in ways that alienated the indigenous populations in the same manner Jews were alienated in Europe.

This battle has circumscribed the globe and subjugated indigenous people - enslaving them to a resource extraction gluttony and debauchery in the name of religion. One of the reasons I hate religion intensely!

As I traveled Israel, I asked questions of everyone that I met, I listened and watched attitudes of both the Jews and the Muslims as a way of understanding this ancient pattern. What I witnessed in the case of the Jewish populations was an arrogant denial of the past, of the attacks against Muslims that began the hostilities. I witnessed religious bigotry and elitism that is practiced by Jews, Christians and Muslims around the world. I do not believe in violent solutions, but when an occupying force moves into your neighborhood and demonizes you as a type of Pagan that is less than the occupier...what do you do?

We cannot ask Jews to leave Israel any more than we can ask Palestinians to leave Palestine, yet the lines have been blurred by thousands of years of genocide. As a world waking up to the attrocity's of our past, we seem to be pointing our fingers in every direction as if there is an innocent victim somewhere to be found. yet, as we study the past we come to see that the victim becomes the perpetrator, becomes the victim, becomes the perpetrator, etc...a vicious circle with no end in site!

I hate what the Jews are doing and I hate what the Palestinians are doing...I hate that this war is being waged in the name of religion, when really the UN sent the Jews to Palestine as a wedge into the Muslim region that has the wealth/oil that we covet. This is why the United States overthrew a democratically elected Iranian leader and put in a tribal warlord dictator (shaw of Iran) - we also overthrew a democratically elected Vietnamese leader and re-instated a Kings son - hence the Vietnamese war. Iraq was invaded for Kurdish oil etc...

As American's, we need to understand history before we can instate justice, but we, as a people, have become enslaved by 'Manifest Destiny' ourselves and are like deer in the headlights of the coming justice. Sucks to deny corruption just bc you do not wish to take responsibility for this.

I so appreciate your presence here at soulcast shelter, for many reasons. You continue to report all sides of the conflict, even though the global media has your readers hipnotized to the point of ignoring the truth!

    mahalo for your aloha

...yet the lines have been blurred by thousands of years of genocide? There was no significant Jewish presence in Palestine for 1300 years before 1910. Which means no "thousands of years of genocide" between Palestinians and Jews dear. You really should read a history book now and again.

    No my dear.

Democratic nationwide elections mandated by the Geneva Conference of 1954 were thwarted by Ngo Dinh Diem's rigged election in 1955 against Bảo Đại, the Emperor, advocating the restoration of the monarchy. The communist nationalist National Liberation Front then began a guerrilla campaign in the late 1950s, assisted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, to overthrow Diem's illegal government, which the NLF's official statement correctly described as a "disguised colonial regime".

Who are these people here? Are these people Israelis being slaughtered by Palestinians? No. This is a massacre by the Israeli Air Force on a major Gaza market place January 3, 2009.

i learned about the US's covert activities in Vietnam by my American History professor. she always brought evidence of what she was teaching because many of her classes walked out on her bc they were mad that the US has committed attrocity on the scale of Hitler. I'm sure there are many different accounts about what led up to the killing fields of VN, same with the history of the Middle East...I will admit that I am not a historical scholar. What I do know is that Imperialistic Colonialism has butchered the world with warfare and unrestrained resource extraction at everyones expense. hence the mess we are trying to make sense of today!

I do not want one single child killed anywhere, anytime - I am anti-war, unless someone invades my home. this was done in Palestine to Palestinians, however, they could never organize against colonial giants. Now they are getting slaughtered before our eyes shelter and i share your angst. I want the rockets to stop, I want the racism and bigotry of religion to stop now! I am angry as well about the Chinese paying muslims to kill those in Darfur for the oil that is in these lands. I am angry about what Blood Diamonds have done in the Congo, hell, I'm still angry about the 'Trail of Tears' in Georgia when gold was discovered!

We do not disagree in this shelter

I may not know all the details that have contributed to everyone of these horrors that i cite, but i know what is being done in the name of freedom and liberty...its theft and slavery - it nips at my heels every friggin day!

Ehhh...... that video is "Are You Being Served?".  A British sit-com of high-camp antics set in Grace Bros., a London Department store.  Popular some decades ago.

I am trying hard to relate this to the subject matter but as hard as I may try, I just cannot see the connection between it and hurling burning phosphorus onto little kiddies and their puppies.  Please explain.........
