i know, i know... i''m lazy and i think the last share culture series i did was last sepetember...

but i'm bringing it back again. and this time i wanna talk about the new year.

if you wanna know about the share your culture series and the rules. read >>>this<<<<

this is my first share your culture series. about public transportation.

with this post, let's talk about the new year. how do you celebrate the new year in your country?

here in the philippines the new year is celebrated in bang... like a very loud bang...

people here celebrate it with noise. they said that we must drive away the bad luck from the previous year and welcome the new year with noise.

that's why so many people have some firecrackers. (and injuries as well)

firecrackers sells like candies here in the philippines. in my hometown back in iloilo, our town is the capital of firecrackers.

and we get really loud... it's like a warzone here...

also we celebrate it with fireworks. and parties...

a lot of parties.. were having a party in our house tonight. well just the family. and we have lot's of food!!! and different beliefs in the new year.

speaking of food, there's also a belief that you must have round fruits in your house during the new year. 12 different kind of fruits actually... it says that it would bring good luck to your home. for now we only have 8. mother is gonna buy more later. but i doubt it if she cann because so many people in the market today!!!

we also have a belief that during in the new year you have to wear any piece of clothing with polka dots on it. polka dots is shaped like coins so it means you would have more money in the new year. i dont know if i have any clothes with polka dots. so i would settle with another belief...

another belief about having more money to the coming year is that you must have coins in your pocket. it means you would never ran out of money through the whole year... i do this every year...

and another belief is that you must put lot's of coins in your home. means more blessing to your home. my aunt do this. like she puts coins in every corner of her house even in the cabinets.

oh and lastly, this is the most funniest tradition during the new year. after the countdown you must jump. it means you would grow taller. i did this when i was young... i'm still short...lol... but it was fun...

there's more beliefs and traditions in our country but this is what i can think of right now...

so how about you?

how do you celebrate the new year in your country???

i hope you like this episode of my share your culture series...

please leave a comment and be nice... please respect each other's culture...

happy new year!!!

Very nice and interesting customs queenie!  I think we're kinda boring here in the US.  Typically we go out to party, drink too much and hopefully we kiss the right person at midnight! LOL

David and I write all of our hopes and dreams down on a piece of paper  at midnight after our first kiss of the year we burn the papers and watch as they make their own kind of fire works... apart from that, what Uni says get drunk... LOL just kidding.

QueenP, Cool spin on the New Year post.  I like it.  I don't have much to add.  We celebrate it about the same way as what has been said.  This year, we will have our kids with us so we plan on going to either a friend's house or spend it with my brother and SIL and their kids.  We'll play some games and wait for 2009.

I appreciate you telling about your culture and the reasons behind what you do.  That is very interesting.  I like hearing about things like that.  The traditions we have in my family don't have any meaning or reason, it's more just tradition.  For example, when we cross the county line in the car, we hold our feet up....just cause we think it is funny.

Love the picture of you.  What did you get in those presents?

    Hugs,
    Fearing

fearing: hello fearing!!! well that's nice that you guys have games... were gonna have a karaoke party later... and yeah we might get drunk...lol... you know traditions and customs here in the philippines have different meaning to it so i'm glad i can share it with you guys. anyway, on the presents i got a dress my friend, a blouse from my sister and her boyfriend, and a pillow tih my name on it from my little sister...

We have what they call "First Night" around here in this state.  I think other states have it too.  It is booze free and lots of celebrating and pretty festive.  I can't say much more cause I have to work that night now.  I guess I will kiss my cat and go to bed! I like the picture queenie!  Happy New Year

Neat posting series Queenie.  Well, I know what we'll be doing this year is having a party.  We'll have food to much on and LOTS of alcohol to drink.  Everybody will pair up, at least those who are fortunate enough, and will smooch when the clock strikes midnight. We might be watching the ball drop on TV, or we might be listening to the radio.  After the first couple of minutes of the new year are done being screamed about and ushered in with excitement, kisses, laughter and happiness we then call stores and other places that we KNOW are open.  We do NOT call emergency lines or things like that, as we know that would be unacceptable.  Anyway, we call those other places and wish them a Happy New Year because at least if they're going to have to be at work, they should have some well wishes.

Liked the pic Queenie, the first I've actually seen of you.  You're quite a beautiful girl, don't' let anybody tell ya any different!

Hi queenparanoia! I'm from the philippines too! well, in our city here, firecrackers are banned so it's kinda quiet here actually. i miss the big bangs. well at least we're safe here. i think the tradition of lighting firecrackers to drive away bad spirits came from the chinese.. oh well happy new year!

Happy New year sweetie.  New years eve used to be full of late night parties, dressed up in fancy party dresses. The next day resulted in getting absolutely nothing done.  We always watch the ball drop from Time square, New York on tv.  We count down as the new year rolls in.

The past couple of years have found me close to home with a few loved ones gathered near.  We would still count down, then go outside tooting horns with our party hats.  Since both my kids are out of town this year.....my gathering is very small.  A gathering of two.......sounds just right for me.  ;). And my attire for the evening may be only a party hat......lol.
    Happy New year queenie!

    Hi Queen:
One of the New Year's traditions in the US, especially in the South, is to eat Black-eyed Peas for dinner on New Years day. They are supposed to bring good luck for the rest of the year if you eat them that way. Traditionally, they are eaten in a dish called Hoppin' John or served with greens.
  • Zayda said on Dec 31, 2008....
SC is doing that weird time thing again.
Anyway, for the past few years, we have made it a tradition with friends to go bowling on New Year's eve. And that's what we are doing again this year.
