People used to use their gardens (not only during the world wars) to grow a certain amount of food. I remember that some people in Soulcast couldn't afford 'greens' for their families. It hurt me to read this! This is not right. It kills me to think of all those people out that who are needlessly starving.
Finally I found an article in the BBC (not one of my favorite sites but there science section is good and non-politicised):

The other information I'd like to put on this posting is the names of some 'old' books :
The After-Dinner Gardening Book by Richard W. Langer, Collier Books, NY, 1969
The City Peoples Book of Raising Food, by Helga and William Olkowski, Rodale Press Inc, Emmause Pennsylvania, 1975
The How to Grow it and Cook it Book by Jacqueline Hériteau, Hawthorn Books Inc. NY, 1970
How to Dry Foods, by Deanna Delong, H.P. Books, P.O. Box 5367, Tucson AZ , 1979
Raise Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs without a Garden, Grow foods in containers and small places, by George “Doc” and Kay Abraham, Countryside Books, 1974
These books may still be available in libraries or reprinted or re-sold copies online. I haven’t the time now to check it out. But there should be other books that have similar information. The whole point is that it is possible to acquire new habits or learn them from great grandmothers and greatgrandfathers, greataunts and greatuncles who still know how to use what is available to elegantly survive. Also we now have Utupe and there are some great people out there who are giving video lessons on these subjects
We are going into really bad times in many ways. But wasn’t it Benjamin Franklyn who said : G-d helps those who help themselves.
So much of the ‘expertise’ of the large companies and the icons of power is now in doubt, lets take back what we can of our lives and try to grow our own food.
Even if its only 10% of our food that can make a difference—if it’s the ‘greens’ the kids need or the extra protein—from beans for example. It’s possible, its not a dream, we can learn to do things for ourselves and our families and our neighbors. ,br>
Helping each other will also ring lots of bells and whistles up there in the Heavenly Court and mabye bring our families and neighborhoods protection from some harsh general decrees. Those who still read their Bibles might have learned that the Creator did not punish the rebelling generation of the dispersion (after the flood) because they were taking care of their families and their neighbors. It was only when the technology (for the Tower of Babel is not necessarily a big building but a technological civilization) became more important than human beings that that generation was punished by being scattered over the earth—without their previous knowledge it seems to me.
Please excuse me if I just post this and go back into reality land. I don’t really have time to answer comments that often. I might come back in from time to time. What is important to me is if somebody starts growing some vegetables or plants an apple tree in his back yard or in a big pot by a window. One by one we can influence others by example and maybe by sharing a ‘harvest’ we’ve grown ourselves. Let’s try to take back what we can of our lives and food is one big chunk of it.
