CAIRO -- Haytham Fawzy al-Rabie stays awake most nights keeping an eye on the gaping space where a door should be. He has done so since one night last November when police smashed into his apartment - destroying the door in the process - and terrorized him and his son. Rabie is one of the unfortunate ones to have firsthand experience with the country's infamous police.

We reported earlier this week that the Russians are sending the Lebanese army a gift of 10 MiG-29s. This will more than double the size of the Lebanese air force's fixed wing strike force, currently composed of four Hawker Hunters and four Fouga Magisters. Those existing eight planes are several decades old and the acquisition by the Lebanese air force of the MiG-29s will provide the Lebanese military with far more modern and sophisticated fighter jets than anything the Lebanese armed forces has ever had in its arsenal.

Thanks to the Mossad, Israel's "Institute for Intelligence and Special Tasks", the Hamas was allowed to reinforce its presence in the occupied territories. Meanwhile, Arafat's Fatah Movement for National Liberation as well as the Palestinian Left were subjected to the most brutal form of repression and intimidation
Let us not forget that it was Israel, which in fact created Hamas. According to Zeev Sternell, historian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, "Israel thought that it was a smart ploy to push the Islamists against the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO)".
