When you are out shopping or participating in whatever business that you may be taking care of, walk as much as you can.  It is so tempting to just stand on an escalator (conveyor that transports people from two separate points) when it is available.  Right next to there is usually a nice well-built set of stairs.  Stairs are built perfectly to get your muscles working and your legs moving.  There is also the option of the elevator, and skipping out on the elevator means some big time exercise.  It might be a toss up if you are going up a thirty-story building between the elevator and the stairs because thirty stories of stairs is quite a haul.  You might have an important meeting and after that many steps, you could end up not in the best of shape for the meeting, so make an exception and get some exercise in after, avoid the elevator on the way down and take the stairs.  There is always another way to look at it and get it to work in your favor.  We are becoming more and more sedentary and less active, so skipping these devices will make you better off.  You could just about give up a gym membership if you truly focused in on walking as much as you possibly could.  One of the best placed to avoid the escalator is at the airport.  Why?  You are going to be sitting for hours on the flight, might as well get some blood flowing through your body and fill you lungs up with a healthy dose of oxygen.  Then, when you are sitting there in that comfortable airline seat everything will be much better than if you did not walk.
