As I said before, I teach Biz English to the French and most of the time I just do my teaching thing and that’s it. I never have much of a problem, unless I try to teach them phrasal verbs or some other whacked out English grammar mystery they find confusing. But the other day I had a long English lesson with a student who works at one of the few high rise buildings in Paris. It was around 6:30 pm and already dark and cold. I was coming to the end of a very draining lesson and a long work week when for some reason she started talking about UFOs. I was reeaally tired by then and instead of just politely listening to her and remaining neutral I told her what I really thought: that I believe in UFOs and had read a lot about past UFO sightings − yada yada yaaa-daaa. I even talked about Ed Mitchell and described some of his experiences with UFOs. I didn’t mention my own past experience (she would have really flipped out I think) but I went on and on. I was pretty honest with her. When I finally left she had this dazed, lost look on her face. Oh man... This woman wanted to learn English and I told her all these freaky UFO stories. Geeezzz….Now I could just kick myself for saying anything. I’m wondering if I’ll get called into the office and get accused of scaring a student with UFO stories. (How stupid could I be?) When I left she looked a little scared and she stared at me as if she saw me in a whole new light. Oh am I nuts or what… That’s all I need – to get chewed out for terrorizing a student with creepy UFO stories. I wonder if she’ll call the office to complain or ask for another teacher who'll stick to the English lesson. To top it off I just started working at a new language school with a new not-too-cool boss who alternates between being overly demanding and sending out potent sexual vibes...I expect to get called into his office and get yelled at for spreading UFO paranoia – or something else. Ahhh man…just before Christmas – and just when I was starting to like this job. Well… we’ll see what happens next week…(sigh..)...keep your fingers crossed for me...
