I was just checking the spelling of Michael Crichton's name by typing it into Google and I discovered that he died on November 4th this year. Probably someone on SoulCast wrote about it. It's kind of shocking since he was so young still, and seemed to be one of those writer's who would be around to challenge scientific thought for decades.
I think I first heard about him back in the Jurassic Park days but I was unaware that he had been writing books and making films since the early 70s. He was also apparently into computers and in 1973 made the first movie to use computer generated special effects.
I have read about five or six of his books and also a couple of his online essays. I always enjoyed the detail he put into writing about various scientific theories and discoveries and I liked that he usually covered two or three fields of scientific study in each book. I can't say that I have a favourite author but the books of his I read I enjoyed.
So, when I saw that he died recently my jaw dropped and I went to the link - his official Web site - and read the front page. It didn't say how he died but covered his career at a glance. So, yeah, it was a surprise to me.
