I was just checking the spelling of Michael Crichton's name by typing it into Google and I discovered that he died on November 4th this year. Probably someone on SoulCast wrote about it. It's kind of shocking since he was so young still, and seemed to be one of those writer's who would be around to challenge scientific thought for decades.

I think I first heard about him back in the Jurassic Park days but I was unaware that he had been writing books and making films since the early 70s. He was also apparently into computers and in 1973 made the first movie to use computer generated special effects.

I have read about five or six of his books and also a couple of his online essays. I always enjoyed the detail he put into writing about various scientific theories and discoveries and I liked that he usually covered two or three fields of scientific study in each book. I can't say that I have a favourite author but the books of his I read I enjoyed.

So, when I saw that he died recently my jaw dropped and I went to the link - his official Web site - and read the front page. It didn't say how he died but covered his career at a glance. So, yeah, it was a surprise to me.

Oh gosh, me too, I had no idea!  :(

While in college in the Philippines, my favourite stage actress mentioned his name in an interview, and that made me curious enough to look him up.  It is when I read Jurassic Park before it has been made into a movie.

My life got busy (after leaving home for abroad), and my reading behaviour from college was changed by my lifestyle.  He was one of those authors, who I wanted to read but was not in the frame of mind to do so.

In the 90´s, I encountered his name more on film credits (movie and television), Twister and ER, the former I saw, the latter I sporadically watched.

66 years old... golly, so young. :(

I wanted to know the reason for his early demise.  And found it here - throat cancer... so sad :( .

On a positive note, he has left a rich legacy for us to enjoy- his stories ...

hot- My jaw dropped also. I really liked this guy and his books. He always gave the most interesting interviews I have ever seen. One thing I learned about him when I read he had died is that he was 6 feet 9 in. tall.

I read about this in the paper, he was very tall. I can't remember what he died from, but I think it was complications from something. Then again, what does it matter what killed him.........he's dead.

It was a shock. He was 6 foot 9 inches tall. Cancer got him. He created the
TV show "ER", wrote Jurassic Park, Westworld, and the Andromedia Strain.
He thought global warming was a farce and wrote a book about that recently,
which everyone should read. He was born in 1942 so he must have been
66 years old. Too young to die. He had four wives. Not sure about his
    children.

How sad.  Even though he was 66....in this day and age that would be too young to die for someone like him.

I saw it on my computer news as it was "news" and it surprised me, much like it did when the "Crocodile Hunter" passed.  I have a special place in my heart for successful authors and hated to hear this.

Also, just stopping by to say hi to you and say I am behind on reading you, but you are one of my favorites, so hope you are doing well.  As I said, I am behind, so I have no idea why you wrote a comment recently that said you were typing with one hand and no capitals......hope you are ok.
