i dropped my 6 year old daughter off to school today with the usual kiss goodbye in the classroom only to be greeted with the reaction of her wiping her cheek with the back of her hand and a totally innocent 'bye mum!' as she skipped off to be with her friends.

mum???

Since when did i become 'mum'! What happened to "bye mummy, love you too!"

When did she grow up enough to use the word 'mum'? Is this it, is 'mummy' starting to be forgotten already? She's only 6! The next thing i know it will be boys invited round for tea, secret diaries and loud music blaring from the bedroom.

Sheesh, when did i start getting old enough to be called mum? Where have the last 6 years gone?

Don't worry kitty you'll always be mummy to her, even if she doesn't say it! i remember using mommy (i'm american ;-) until high school, i'm sure she'll resurrect it for very important occasions! xox

Kitty Kat I know what you mean. The first time my daughter called me from school and I told her I love her and she did not say it back I was heart broken. I know its not really the same thing but it goes to the growing up deal. It sucks to think that all of a sudden there to "big" to do childish things like that. For me it's the hardest part of being a parent. The part that will break your heart the fastest. The signs of your baby growing up.:( PS I have to say I call my mom Mommy every now and again and I am over 30 myself. So sub pet is right she will bring it out every now and again.

momofkandn: Thanks for stopping by! i think i gave up calling my mum 'mummy' when i was likely 6 or 7 so i guess i really shouldn't complain! Being a parent of 2 growing beautiful children and watching the eldest one grow into a beautiful, intelligent, independant girl before my very eyes is both heartbreaking and fills me the most immense amunt of joy and pride. Wouldn't ever swap these experiences for the world.

It's at the same time interesting yet saddening to see our children grow up right in front of us.  My youngest, almost 14 months now, has just started to explore "The Power of No!", meaning that now she knows what the word means and can say it that therefore it only makes sense we should follow her wishes.  It's part of the realization kids have when they learn to talk that now they can effectively communicate, well of COURSE we should do as they ask since the issue in the past was we didn't understand them since they couldn't talk yet!

In the middle of the age range of kids, those ones have decided they don't actually need to pay much attention to mom or dad since they seem to be figuring things out themselves and besides ... they never get hurt ignoring our advice.  Or not badly so far ... the 11 yr old did manage frost bite on Sunday although he now claims that we must be wrong, it's really okay.  But it isn't of course, he'll be far more susceptible to it for the next few years and we'll have to keep an eye on it.

As teens, well they naturally know everything.  A personal favourite slogan of mine "Hire a teen while they still know everything."  Right ...

And the eldest, now 16, she's actually coming out the other side of it all and starting to realize bit by bit that us older parents actually ARE wiser every once in a while.

*sigh*  But it's when your kids decide they're going to experiment calling you by your given name instead of even mom or dad that you really get an idea of how old they're growing!
