i know that there's a soulcast_help account to which any user can post issues with the site. in fact, i keep that bookmarked should i need it.

i'm creating this blog entry for the specific purpose of seeing if anyone else would like to have something different about how the soulcast home page works.

when you arrive at soulcast, you are immediately taken to a page that lists the featured posts. this makes sense: when a newcomer arrives at the site, he or she is best served by seeing the featured posts.

but when it's a registered user, wouldn't it make more sense either to take us to our own blog page, or perhaps the my conversations tab? wouldn't it be nice to see if anyone you're subscribed to (or who's subscribed to you? not sure) posted anything new since the last time you were at that page (this is presently accomplished by clicking my users|most recent).

am i alone in thinking that for regustered users only, this would be superior to seeing the featured posts?

No, ed, you're not alone. I have been thinking along similar lines.

I think I would prefer to be taken to the "my users"|"most recent" area than to the "my conversations" tab, but I'm not sure... my opinion is probably coloured by the fact that I have not actually taken part in many conversations yet.

feather'd one, i can't shake the feeling i know you from somewhere else, perhaps some time ago.

I'd prefer that too. I'd also like a time stamp against the post so you know when the comment was made to avoid having to open it unnecessarily.

Not sure I care. I would probably end up back at the
featured users page anyway to see what is going on.
However, I do not use the My Conversations tab much
    because I usually forget to.

It doesn't matter to me. After all, how hard is it just to click the mouse once to get where you want to be?
  • paidinblood said on Aug 22, 2006....
I usually look at the my conversation tab first to check if any conversation I participated in had any further development.

I kinda just rely on the email notifications to tell me when something new was posted... except tonight, it doesn't seem to be working, at least on the blog I posted earlier. I didn't get any notifications when I got commented on.

I would like a PM feature though. Badly.

    @Alyss regarding the timestamp
I think we will do that since it's very easy to add. Look for it within a week or so.

    @everything else :)
We are always thinking of new ways to bring content to users and we have some features planned that should address many of these issues.

OK, now that was damned fast! thanks for the quick response!

re: time stamp: wouldn't that require that the software adjust for user time zones? or would it just run on GMT?

Agreed: So that you can read your subscribers' recent post. It'l help you a lot. You won't need to click to individual page.

disagree: You won't know others unless you go to some other links.
  • JadeLondon said on Aug 22, 2006....
I think it would be nice if it opened on the recent page. Newcomers may be more likely to gain notice. If people aren't interested then they could tab on to the featured page.

Or as you already mentioned, make a slightly different set up for members.
  • iamlala said on Aug 23, 2006....
I agree that upon signing on it should take us to our page, BUT I think that because it does let us see new featured posts immediately, we get a chance to read others before getting involved with our own. I probably wouldnt have read this post tonight anyways if it wasnt one of the first things I saw when I signed in. Maybe thats why it is the way it is.
  • GMNIMan said on Aug 23, 2006....
I too believe that we should be taken to the most recent page as our default page everytime we log in.

I just hope that SoulCast takes notice.
  • FaithfulDisciple said on Aug 23, 2006....
Hope they won't forget the importance of a counter on each site. It helps to track how many actually visited even those that are not officially registered as Soulcast members.
  • feather'd_One said on Aug 23, 2006....
iamlala: I can certainly see where you're coming from. For me, though, this has contributed to a long delay in actually becoming involved in the first place, because I end up just reading and reading, and not getting around to my own stuff at all! :D

I also appreciate the point that Jade made about newcomers being more likely to gain notice if it opened on the recent page. I guess there are advantages and disadvantages to every option.

I suspect, based on SoulCast's comment, that they may be planning on allowing us adjustable settings so that we can choose what works best for us individually. That's an excellent idea! And, if SoulCast is not planning this, then... well, it's still an excellent idea... hint, hint ;)

Silverwhisper (hehehe, i almost called you "-whipper") : I don't think I know you from anywhere else. Am curious as to how you got that feeling since I have said so little! Do you have a particular time/place in mind, or is it more of a vague thing?
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 23, 2006....
i know someone who used to use a variation of your user name. he's a good guy.

Woot! A time stamp 'cos of me :D

I suppose I'd better start hoping that noone objects to that idea...
  • Alyss said on Aug 25, 2006....
I have just discovered that comments are now editable after posting ~ woot! You have a 60 second window to click on your comment to effect an edit.

Thanks Soulcast now we can all fix the typos that we spot after the event!

Ah, I see. Nope, I'm not that guy, ed. Never used a name like this one before... and I'm not a guy ...or AM I??? ;) ...Gee, I quite like this anonymity thing! LOL ...i think i shall remain genderless here for a while... maybe even forever... feels kinda free :)

Good to meet you silverwhisper. Have been enjoying reading some of your many blog entries since I landed here a couple of weeks ago. You seem like a pretty good guy too :)

LOL, yeah, it may take a while. My hard-drive packed it in last week so have hardly been online as it's more awkward to do so elsewhere. Also have lots of things I really need to focus on right now so blogging and communing here is probably gonna really have to be an occasional thing, though I would certainly enjoy spending lots of time here.
    ..be seein' ya... :)
