In life, everything is constantly moving and changing, in fact I can't think of one single thing that ever stays the same in any way. Even after death, the body rots away, giving way for more life in one form or another.

Even us ourselves are constantly changing both mentally and physically. I am different now to how I was a moment ago. I have just experienced more life and been part of that change through and through. We are intricately connected to every change that happens on earth, largely through the unconscious, but partly through the conscious. When conscious we have the power to change or influence certain changes, but through the unconscious we cannot choose. These things will happen anyway, as they are created and influenced by "other people's choices".

We build up a need like an addiction throughout life to want certain things, whether it be wanting the good things to stay, or the bad things to go, we always want it to go our way. If one thing is certain, it is that things won't always go our way. This building up of wants, we call hope.

Hope, is a dangerous thing. It almost always leads to mental pain and anguish when things don't go the way we hope. So why do it in the first place?

At any moment in time, everyone has everything they need to exist(if they didn't, they wouldn't be here - then it wouldn't matter anyway). Everything else is extra, and for that we should be happy.

Everything changes, that is what life is - trying to go against it is agains the very nature of what life is, hence the pain it causes.

Sweet. That just about sums it up. ;)

Would like to add...it is ok to 'want'. As long as it's being done consciously, wanting is what drives us to evolve. However, if you don't realise the pain it can caused when done incorrectly, it can be very painful.

Thanks for the addition tb, that's all spot on. Conscious wanting is fine, as long as you acknoledge when you're doing it, and it's being done for the right reasons. Hoping is just asking to get hurt.

Hope CAN be a dangerous thing. Personally I would appreciate the things we have as of yet while they're still there. Clinging to the status quo is simply folly.

what is the source of this point of view?
  • mrhowto said on Aug 22, 2006....
This isn't a point of view, it's simple truth hence the source could be said is common sense.
  • stark said on Aug 22, 2006....
yes, but it's an almost exact reproduction of a certain philosophy/religion. I was curious if that is where you got it :)

without hope, the human race would be a sad lot-
    I don't buy this philosophy.
  • stark said on Aug 22, 2006....
the philosophy/religion I mentioned doesn't say there shouldn't be hope. It says that hanging on to things can cause a lot of suffering. For example, I may want to be a famous singer, but I can't sing very well. If I spend most of my life working towards a goal that I wont reach then I will have a great deal of suffering. Hope is fine, but you also have to know not to cling to it too tightly.

We live in world where each individuals 'hope' is only for the continuation of themselves... hence we have utter selfishness and there is no 'hope'. Thought of self brings sorrow and misery. If each individuals 'hope' was for the continuation of others and the resources of the world were shared rather than squandered through selfishness and greed only THEN would there be 'hope' in the world. Problem solved.

Hope is not necessarily bad, I said hope can be dangerous in the same sense that false hope IS dangerous.

Hello! mrhowto and all other soulcast friends
I am Divinesoul another new entrant
Ifeel,Hope need not necessarily be building up of wants, as there is another word 'greed 'for it.Hope can be treated as another form of faith.Let us not be hopeless.

So, it is desirable to Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Hoping for the best will result into dynamic profitable worthwhile actions.
Preparring for worst will enable one to face defeat and discouragement.

The fact that every thing is constantly moving and changing can be taken in a positive perspective and as a positive perception of life.
One should accept his present situation totally. If it is unhappiness, any way it is likely to pass away.
If it is happiness suitable action can be taken to persist it.
