Sage means wise. But the type of person known as the Sage isn't known for wisdom, so the type is misnamed. The type is known for its outgoing communication, its sense of humor, its spreading of information, its flamboyance. Would you call that "sage"? I wouldn't. My poster boy for the Sage is Howard Stern.

Sages are known for having fun. Also for loving public attention. Love to be in the spotlight. I think of Bob Hope as a Sage. Phyllis Diller. I connect the Sage to Type 7 in the enneagram, loosely, though I can think of Type 7 people who aren't Sages. And yet, Howard Stern, Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller are all Type 7 and are all Sages, as far as I can tell.

Okay, for people younger than myself who may not know Phyllis Diller and Bob Hope, let me suggest Chris Rock. There's your Sage. Perfect example. Big mouth. Sense of humor. Love the spotlight. Great communicator. Seems like he's looking for a good time.

The three types of people who are called "exalted" are Kings, Priests, and Sages. By exalted, they mean that these people are focused on the big picture, the entire world, as opposed to people who are focused on their own personal stuff, period. It's not meant to suggest that these types are in some way better than other types. On the contrary, the system teaches that any one of us could have chosen any one of these types to be. We all could have been Kings just by deciding that's what we would like to be. No other qualifications. Or so they say.

I really don't have any more to add about the Sage. That's it. Done.
