I was born Catholic but I have always felt that there was something unbalanced about the church. It isn't difficult for me to believe that Christ had a wife. It seems like a totally natural thing even for an enlightened person such as Christ. Buddha was a prince and he had a wife and a child before achieving his enlightenment. I think that the basic nature of the universe consists of male and female energies. The Chinese know it as the Tao, you may have heard of it as Yin and Yang. To deny this is a foolish rejection of all that is. I think that the book and the movie is a good refreshing challenge to old patriarchal dogma. I hope some more information comes out to challenge established norms in religion or any other dogmatic area of life.
The Buddha had discovered the "middle way" after years of meditation. He had be followed the ways of extreme ascetics which led him nowhere. He discovered the middle way while listening to a musician and has teacher trying to tune an instrument on boat on the river. The teacher was teaching his pupil not to let the string hang to loose or it would not play. It wasnt' good to sring the lute too tight otherwise it would break. Through this realization he changed his spiritual philosophy. He discovered that change was a vital part of life. The extremes of asceticism forbidding proper food, normal life, relations with one's spouse were all extremes. The realization that Buddha learned was that withdrawing from all things was not the way to God. It was a moderation found in living, a balance of life and meditation. If he would have stayed the dogmatic ascetic that he had become while meditating for years in the forest he would have never achieved enlightement. We must also incorporate change into our lives. I feel this new information about Jesus is the beginning of a Renaissance in Christian thought. In fact this information is very old and many authors have written about it before, yet know it has achieved a great deal of public interest. Only if the masses let it change their way of seeing Christ, God, or the Universe will it benefit them. Without change there is no growth. The basic nature of everything is change. Taoism is a testament to this truth. Read the Tao Teh Ching and you will understand this message.
